Chapter 17 - CHAPTER SEVENTEEN:TENSION BETWEEN THEM.

I parked my car at the parking lot and entered the hospital ready to begin work. Today,I was only going to focus on work and the IHC.I really need to get prepared for it as I don't want to disappoint Mr. Hills and everyone in the hospital.

Getting to Dina's desk,I greeted her as usual.

"Any cases yet?"I asked.

"Hold on a second, let me check right away."she responded as she went back to her computer, typing something.

"Yeah,a fifteen year old boy needs a heart transplant which we've notified the nearby hospitals."She explained.

"Apart from that, are there any anomalies?Has he been examined and are the results in? Should I go to Freya for the test results?"

"No need Chris,Dr.Hills is handling this case. It turns out that he's close to the patient."My heart skipped a lot of beats at the mention of Leonard's name. He was already here? And handling a case I was to do as well? Was I being punished for a sin I unknowingly committed or what? What if we met?

Well we were definitely going to meet. That was for sure. Will there be tension between us when we meet? Would he notice that something was off?

"Hello! A penny for your thoughts?" Dina ended my train of thoughts.

"Ah huh,you were saying.."

"Well you zoned out for a while there. Is everything alright."she asked looking a little worried.

Great, the day hasn't began yet and another person has already noticed. Was it really that obvious?

"Yes,no need to worry.Something just came to mind. The IHC has been taking a toll on me these days." I lied.

"Really, relax girl. You've got this. I'm one hundred percent sure you would win this year again. " She said in a declarative manner.

"Yeah yeah. Don't overdo it before you jinx it.I really don't want to disappoint anyone." I confessed.

"And you won't.Chris,I know you are aware of the displeasure the others have against you representing the hospital for the God- knows-how time. But you don't have to feel guilty or worried because you were chosen by the president of the hospital. He has his reasons for choosing you again so if anyone has a problem with that, they should go ask him. And we both know no one dares to do that."she said and we both laughed clearing the atmosphere and getting attention from those near us.

"Aww,I really appreciate your comfort. It means a lot that you say this." I said genuinely.

"That's the truth and everyone here knows I do not lie."She pointed out which made me roll my eyes.

"Alright now,I have to go and check on the case. Do you have any idea where I can find Dr.Hills?"I asked even though I knew deep down,he was the least person I wanted to see right now. I wasn't ready to start reminiscing what happened last night.

"Duh, where else would he be if not in his office?" She answered in that sarcastic tone of hers.

"Okay then, see you later." I said heading to the elevator but got stopped by Dina.

"Hey,I saw Carissa and her boyfriend walk in together this morning. She was smiling in a very unusual way which made me get chills. Did something happen last night between those two?" She asked with a mischievous look on her face.

"Why are you asking? It's not like I was with them last time. Carissa is the one you should be asking. Infact, when will you learn to stop sticking your nose in other people's businesses. Why don't you do something so someone will also discuss about it?"I criticized. The once mischievous expression slowly turned into anger and embarrassment.

"Hey, I'm just showing my concern. Plus,I don't care what those two did. I just want to know if my colleagues are alright and that there is nothing bothering them." She said in defense.

"Hmm I believe you.And since you really care,I will tell Cas that you wanted to know what happened between she and her boyfriend to see if everything is alright. Gotta go bye." I said, rushing towards the elevator this time and not giving her time to defend or explain herself.

"Hey,come back here. That's not what I meant." I heard her say behind me but I didn't turn.

Finally entering the elevator,I now faced her.She gave me a pleading look not to tell Cas about what she said and giving her a wink, the door of the elevator finally closed which I lost sight of her. I smiled and shook my head thinking about what Cas would do to her if I actually told on her.

"Good morning Dr.Light"I hadn't realized I was in the elevator with someone until now.It was even Dr.Conner. Him again? Our paths were really crossing these days. Remembering what happened at the washroom last night, embarrassment started to kick in. I couldn't help but lower my head a little.

"Yeah good morning Dr.Conner.How are you doing today?" I asked, trying to make things look normal between us.

"I should be asking you that. With what happened last night,is everything okay now? "He asked with that same worried expression I noticed yesterday on his face. Was he really concerned?

"Yes, everything is fine now. Thanks for asking. "I said politely. The glasses he lent to me came to mind and I realized I had left it in the car. Shit.

"I'm sorry but I forgot to return the glasses. How about to tomorrow?"I suggested feeling a little quilty. What if he thought I had forgotten about what he did for me and deemed me ungrateful?

"No pressure Dr.Light, you can keep it. I have many."he said with a big smile plastered on his face. I was completely caught off guard. I rarely saw emotions on his face. What could have happened to him for him to be in such a good mood therefore smiling like this.

"Okay,if you say so. Thank you Dr.Conner,I really appreciate it." I said in genuine gratitude. I was definitely going to tell Cas about this new side of her assistant.I knew she wasn't going to believe me unless she saw it for herself.

Minutes had passed and the elevator finally came to a halt.

"Are you here for Cas?"I asked and he nodded.

"She sent me to bring the test results of a patient to her office."he explained and I nodded this time.

The elevator opened and my heart jumped when I saw who greeted us. It was Leonard. I was completely motionless. My mind sent signals to my body to move but my body refused to obey.

He looked at me then looked at Dr.Conner. They we're both staring at each other as if in a staring contest. It was as if the god of silence came to pay us a visit. I could smell tension in the air. Was there something that happened between them? God, the awkwardness was killing me. Someone break this silence before I die.
