Chapter 16 - The Baron's Retribution

The jubilation in Oakhaven was short-lived, replaced by a quiet apprehension. While the defeat of Kaelen brought immense relief, the villagers knew the Baron's wrath would not be so easily appeased. Rylan, however, felt a grim satisfaction. This was the opening he needed. The Baron had been provoked, and now, he would be forced to reveal his true strength.

Rylan immediately began to prepare. He spent hours in intense dual cultivation sessions with Elara, Lyra, and Lena. His Qi Condensation (Early Stage) realm, newly achieved, was now rapidly stabilizing and deepening. The consistent influx of spiritual energy from his Harem members refined his essence, making him feel a subtle yet constant progression. Elara's loyalty and basic Qi Gathering, Lyra's intelligent mana affinity and herbal knowledge, and Lena's gentle healing energy and medicinal practices all contributed synergistically. He noticed that with Lena, his spiritual resilience seemed to improve, making his Dantian more robust, while Lyra's energy made his offensive capabilities feel more fluid.

During the day, Rylan took charge of Oakhaven's defenses. He directed the villagers to reinforce weak points, clear lines of sight, and establish watch points. He wasn't a military commander, but his enhanced senses and tactical mind, sharpened by the System, allowed him to see vulnerabilities and devise effective, if basic, strategies. He even taught a few able-bodied villagers rudimentary ways to sense immediate danger, a basic form of alertness that could save lives.

"The Baron will not take this insult lightly, Master Rylan," Elder Kael warned one evening, his brow furrowed with worry. "He has other cultivators. Stronger ones, perhaps, than Kaelen."

"I am aware, Elder Kael," Rylan replied calmly, his eyes gazing out at the moonlit fields. "Let him send them. Oakhaven will be ready." He knew Kaelen's defeat would sting the Baron's pride deeply.

Two days later, the expected retaliation arrived.

The sun was barely above the horizon when the blare of a distant horn echoed through the valley. From the east, a cloud of dust rose, growing steadily larger. Rylan, already at a makeshift lookout point on the edge of the village, observed the approaching force.

It was larger than Kaelen's small patrol. A company of twenty Baron's guards marched with grim determination, their armor glinting. At their head, however, were not one, but two cultivators. Both emanated the distinctive aura of Qi Condensation cultivators, stronger and more refined than Kaelen. One was a broad-shouldered man wielding a heavy warhammer, his presence radiating raw, brute force. The other was a leaner, more agile figure, armed with twin daggers, his spiritual energy flowing with a subtle, elusive quality.

These were the Baron's true enforcers, his personal cultivation guards, likely dispatched directly from his keep.

[Ding! Major Threat Detected!][Enemy Cultivators: Two Qi Condensation (Mid-Stage). Approximately Qi Condensation (Early Stage to Mid-Stage) power.][Potential Reward (Combat, High Challenge): Qi Condensation (Early Stage to Mid-Stage) breakthrough, Advanced Martial Art Technique (Hammer/Dagger based), Minor Weapon Affinity.]

Rylan felt a surge of exhilaration mixed with anticipation. This was the challenge he craved. A direct confrontation that promised significant power advancement.

He turned to Elara, Lyra, and Lena, who stood ready behind him, their faces pale but resolute. "Stay here," he commanded, his voice firm. "Do not engage. This fight is mine. Lyra, prepare any of your more potent smoke concoctions. Elara, Lena, focus your spiritual senses. If anyone tries to slip past, alert me immediately."

He didn't need to ask for their loyalty. It was absolute. Elara clutched her wooden bird, her gaze fixed on him with unwavering trust. Lyra nodded, already reaching into her satchel. Lena pressed her hands together, a silent prayer, her fear still present but overridden by her devotion.

Rylan descended from the lookout, a lone figure walking towards the approaching force. He met their gaze head-on, his stance confident, his spiritual energy subtly flaring, daring them to advance.

The two lead cultivators halted their company a hundred paces from the village. The warhammer-wielding cultivator stepped forward, his voice a deep growl. "You are the one who dares defy Baron Von Hess? The one who shamed Kaelen? You will pay dearly for your arrogance, peasant!"

Rylan simply extended an open hand, his spiritual energy radiating outwards, not with aggression, but with a silent, profound challenge. "Come. Let us see whose arrogance is misplaced."

The wind picked up, swirling dust around them. The village held its breath. The fate of Oakhaven, and Rylan's continued rise, hung in the balance.
