It was weird.
I told myself for the hundredth time as I sat motionless on my chair, watching the boy eat.
Earlier, nothing had happened in my chambers. He hadn't even acted surprised when he saw the shroud I'd been holding. If he had caught me inhaling it, I wasn't sure, but I doubted it was impossible. Considering he had been there long enough for me to raise my head and find him standing at the door, staring.
"How is the food?" I finally asked, clearing my throat to cut through the thick silence that hung between us.
He lifted another spoonful of the rich mix of proteins on his plate and chewed slowly, so slowly that I found myself wondering how anyone could possibly eat like that. And how he of all people could too.
"It is nice, Alpha," he replied after a short pause. "The servants do know how to cook here in the North."
I swallowed. His voice.
Something was off about it.
