Chapter 11 - Quiet Beginnings

UNTIL THE STARS ALIGN

Chapter 11 — Quiet Beginnings

The soft hum of the city seeped through the cracks of Luka's open window, the sound of Tokyo life mixing with the faint buzz of cicadas as summer melted into autumn. Luka sat cross-legged at his desk, pencil tapping idly against the page of his notebook. He wasn't studying, not really — instead, he was sketching out fragments of another story idea, something about heroes and quiet, ordinary love.

But even as the pencil danced over the page, his mind kept drifting.

Drifting to her.

To Aria.

It had been almost two weeks since that night in the park — two weeks since that hooded stranger appeared and shattered their sense of safety, two weeks since they escaped the chaos that could have gone so, so wrong.

In those two weeks, something had shifted between them.

They weren't just friends anymore.

---

The morning light spilled across the classroom as Luka slid into his seat, headphones slung around his neck and his bag dropping with a soft thud against the floor. He glanced up, his gaze drawn almost unconsciously toward the second row where she sat, her long dark hair shimmering like ink under the sunlight that filtered through the wide classroom windows.

Aria turned her head, her eyes finding his instantly — like they always did now — and her lips curved into that soft, quiet smile that somehow knocked the breath from his lungs.

"Morning," she said, her voice like a whisper only for him.

"Morning," Luka replied, his usual calm voice softer than normal.

To anyone else, they looked like close friends. But their friends — their little group — had started to notice.

"Yo, Luka," Ren said, leaning across the aisle with a grin as the teacher droned on about literature. "You're spacing out again. Thinking about your girlfriend?"

"She's not—" Luka started, but the words caught. Because lately, when someone teased him about Aria, it didn't feel entirely wrong anymore.

Aria flushed in her seat, ducking her head to hide the faint pink that spread across her cheeks, but there was no denial in her silence either.

---

After school, they walked home together. They always did now.

The streets of their quiet Tokyo neighborhood were washed in the golden haze of the evening sun, the air crisp with the first hints of autumn. Luka walked on the outer side of the sidewalk — like always — his hands casually stuffed in his jacket pockets.

"You didn't eat much today," Luka said quietly, glancing sideways at her. "Still feeling a bit off?"

Aria shook her head, her hair brushing against her cheeks. "I just… wasn't that hungry." She hesitated, then added softly, "But thank you for worrying. You always do."

Luka's lips curved into the faintest of smiles. "Someone has to."

They reached the small park near Aria's house, the one with the quiet benches and a view of the skyline in the distance. They sat there for a while, the silence between them comfortable, broken only by the rustle of leaves and the hum of the city beyond.

"You know," Aria said after a moment, her voice barely above a whisper, "I never thought I'd have someone like you in my life."

Luka turned his head, meeting her gaze. "Someone like me?"

She nodded, her expression soft but earnest. "Someone who… makes me feel safe. Someone who doesn't expect anything from me. It's like… when you're around, the world feels quieter."

For a moment, Luka didn't know what to say. His chest tightened, his throat felt dry, but somehow, the words came out steady.

"I don't plan on going anywhere, Aria," he said simply. "Not now. Not ever."

---

Their days fell into a rhythm after that.

Afternoons spent in the quiet corner of the café near the train station, Luka helping Aria with math homework while she gently teased him about his obsession with anime soundtracks. Evenings where they shared earbuds, walking the streets of Tokyo lit up by the neon glow, talking about their favorite shows and games.

Aria started sharing more about herself. Her love for sketching — though she wasn't very good at it — and the way she used to dream of painting cityscapes. Her quiet fear of thunderstorms. The fact that she hated coffee but would drink it anyway if Luka recommended it.

And Luka… Luka found himself sharing things he never told anyone. His love for writing, the stories that lived inside his head, the quiet dream of maybe turning them into manga someday if he ever found someone to help him bring them to life.

"You'd be amazing at that," Aria said one evening as they sat beneath the glow of a streetlamp. "I'd read every single one."

Luka chuckled softly, rubbing the back of his neck. "Maybe. But… it's just a dream right now."

"Dreams are where everything starts," she replied, smiling gently.

---

One Friday night, their group convinced them to join for karaoke. The room was loud, filled with laughter and off-key singing, drinks lined up on the table — cola, soda, and a few beers for those old enough. Luka stuck with soda, as always, his morals and quiet discipline keeping him grounded.

"You're no fun," Ren teased, nudging him. "One drink won't kill you."

"I don't drink," Luka said calmly, sipping his soda. "Never have. Never will."

Aria, sitting beside him, smiled softly. She liked that about him — his quiet strength, his discipline.

When someone shoved the mic into his hands, Luka reluctantly sang one of his favorite anime opening themes. His voice wasn't perfect, but Aria's quiet laughter and soft clapping made the embarrassment worth it.

---

Later, walking her home under the quiet night sky, Luka found himself stopping on the bridge overlooking the river.

"Aria," he said softly.

She turned, eyes curious. "What is it?"

For a moment, he hesitated. The city lights reflected in her eyes, and Luka realized — painfully, achingly — just how much she meant to him.

"I…" His throat tightened, but he forced himself to finish. "I don't just want to be with you now. I want… I want to marry you someday. Be with you until the day I die."

Aria's breath hitched, her eyes wide, her cheeks blooming with warmth. She didn't speak at first, but then — slowly, hesitantly — she stepped closer, her hand brushing his in a quiet answer that said everything her voice couldn't.

The stars above shimmered faintly, and for a fleeting moment, the world felt perfectly aligned.
