The grand mahogany doors of the royal audience chamber swung open with a slow, heavy groan.
King Edmund Trialuh sat slouched upon his gilded throne, his aging face pale and sunken beneath the weight of sudden grief. Beside him, the royal chancellor stood with a trembling posture, clutching a sheaf of frantic border reports. The air in the vast hall was thick with incense and the stifling atmosphere of impending doom.
As Leornars and Stacian stepped onto the polished marble floor, their footsteps echoed with rhythmic, calm precision.
"Your Majesty," Leornars spoke smoothly, bowing his head just enough to satisfy the bare minimum of courtly etiquette. "We received the grave news echoing through the city speakers. The loss of Her Royal Highness, Princess Alisha, is a tragic blow to the realm."
King Edmund raised a weary, bloodshot eye to look at the White Plague. "The Black Acers... Those lawless, parasitic wretched vermin... To dare strike down the bloodline of Lurtra on the open road..." The king's fist tightened on the armrest until his knuckles turned ghostly white. "I have authorized a blank royal decree. Whoever brings me the severed head of their leader shall be granted whatever their heart desires—gold, territory... even a place beside the throne."
"A generous offer for a desperate time," Leornars remarked, a cold, unreadable expression settling over his features. "However, let us not allow tragedy to halt the necessary wheels of statecraft. We have returned to deliver our final accounting for the harvest season."
Stacian stepped forward, unfolding a scroll bound with official royal ribbon.
"Through the implementation of the three-field rotation, mechanized bone-meal fertilization, and stream-grinding infrastructure," Stacian announced, her voice ringing clearly through the silent hall, "the kingdom's total agricultural yield has increased by four hundred percent. We have officially cleared the entire national debt owed to the Kingdom of Durmount."
She paused, letting the weight of the statement settle, before delivering the final numbers.
"Forty thousand Star Platinum coins have already been dispatched via secure royal couriers directly to Durmount's treasury. Furthermore, the excess harvest has generated a net surplus of twenty-seven thousand platinum coins for Lurtra's official vaults."
The chancellor's jaw dropped in sheer, unadulterated shock. He frantically shuffled through his own papers, trying to find a discrepancy, but found none. "F-Forty thousand... fully cleared?! In less than three months?!"
"Precisely," Leornars interjected, his heterochromatic eyes locking onto the king. "As per our binding magic contract, Your Majesty: the debt is wiped clean, your kingdom's sovereignty is secured from external repossession, and my payment is now due."
King Edmund let out a shaky, exhaled breath, looking visibly aged. "The contract shall be honored. Two thousand six hundred square miles of territory—extending from the coast, bordering the Spirit Forest and the northern wasteland—shall be permanently severed from Lurtra's maps. A sovereign domain, entirely yours."
"I expect the sealed, blood-signed land deed on my desk before the evening banquet," Leornars said flatly, turning on his heel without waiting to be formally dismissed. "We shall leave you to your mourning, Your Highness."
Later that evening, deep within the subterranean chambers beneath Leornars' private quarters, a thick, violet-tinged fog clung to the stone floor.
Stacian stood leaning against a stone pillar, her dark wings folded neatly behind her as she watched Leornars finalize a complex array of dark magic circles inscribed in blood and crushed lapis lazuli.
Beside him stood the newly raised undead form of Princess Alisha Montgomery. Her skin was pale, smooth as fine porcelain, and devoid of the bloodstains that had ruined her travel garments. Her golden hair was neatly braided back, and her eyes—once filled with fierce, desperate defiance—now glowed with a faint, ghostly crimson hue beneath her long lashes.
"Test the link," Leornars commanded coldly.
The undead princess blinked once, her head tilting with unnerving, fluid precision.
*"My Lord..."* Her voice echoed directly inside Leornars and Stacian's minds through a private, telepathic pulse. *"I can perceive the surface thoughts of every soul within a two-mile radius... The guards outside the courtyard are anxious about the banquet... The chancellor is currently hiding gold in his private wall safe... Prince Edward is drinking wine in his quarters, whispering to himself about his newfound inheritance..."*
Stacian raised an eyebrow, a slow, approving smile spreading across her lips. "Remarkable. A walking, unbreachable intelligence network. No mind magic barriers or anti-reconnaissance artifacts can detect a passive telepathic pulse from an entity that technically registers as deceased."
"Exactly," Leornars said, adjusting his dark silk cuffs. "In high-stakes political negotiations, knowing your opponent's bottom line before they even open their mouth isn't just an advantage—it is absolute dominance."
He turned his gaze toward Alisha. "Return to the shadows of my inner domain until called upon."
"As you command, Master," the undead princess whispered aloud, her body dissolving into a pool of jet-black mist that seeped directly into Leornars' shadow.
Stacian crossed her arms, looking at her master with an amused, wicked glint in her eyes. "So... the land contract is practically in our hands, the harvest surplus is safely embezzled into our dimensional storage, and the crown princess is now your private puppet. What is our play for the banquet tonight?"
Leornars walked over to the desk, picking up two sealed wine glasses and handing one to Stacian.
"Tonight, we play the part of benevolent saviors," Leornars smirked, clinking his glass against hers. "We toast to the king's health, we toast to the fallen princess... and while the entire court is distracted by grief and political maneuvering, we prepare the final strike that will burn the royal lineage of Lurtra to the ground."
Stacian took a slow sip of the deep red wine, her crimson eyes gleaming under the dim torchlight.
"Two monarchs down," she purred softly. "And an empire born from the ash."
