Chapter 242 - The Epoch Crucible

Adrian studied the second doorway for a moment before inclining his head toward Khyron. He stepped into the denser golden light, allowing its spatial force to close around him and carry him away from the chamber.

When his surroundings settled, Adrian found himself standing within another phenomenon zone. At first glance, it seemed almost identical to the first level. Golden essence filled the room and concealed its distant boundaries behind a luminous fog. The resemblance ended when Adrian extended his perception. The rules here were woven together, and the smallest movement of one strand altered the meaning of every strand connected to it.

Two distinct layers existed within this zone. The outer layer contained the Basic Galactic knowledge of Time that Adrian already possessed, while the interlocking rules beneath it formed a path he had never obtained. They carried the complete bridge toward Advanced Galactic Kaalatva, the missing comprehension required to transform his crude use of Time into something far more complete.

This was the knowledge Fate and Causality had brought him to find.

Adrian closed his eyes and allowed the noise of ordinary perception to fade. When he opened them again, both irises had become white-grey, and the Source Eyes separated the luminous fog into linked structures of sequence, duration, and change.

At the Basic Galactic stage, Adrian had sensed Time as a current rather than a straight line, with every living existence carried upon its flow. Moments could stretch, contract, and curl back through repeating spirals of cause and effect, yet each transformation still followed an order that connected one state to the next.

That comprehension had allowed him to accelerate his perception and construct isolated regions where years passed while only a day moved beyond their boundaries. What he had never understood was the deeper principle that preserved an existence when its body, mana, consciousness, and memories were forced to move through that current at different rates.

The Advanced Galactic knowledge here revealed the continuity that made such alterations stable. Every living being carried an unbroken relationship between what it had been a moment earlier and what it was becoming now. A pulse of mana travelled through a hand, the flesh changed beneath its passage, the wider body responded to that alteration, and the cultivator's consciousness recorded the entire sequence in the correct order. None of those processes existed separately. Together, they formed a continuous personal history.

Safely manipulating Time required every one of those changes to remain part of the same existence.

If mana accelerated while the physical body remained behind, the channels carrying it would be destroyed. If thought raced forward while memory continued recording events at its previous rate, the consciousness would gradually lose the sequence required to recognize itself. If life force moved through years while the physical foundation experienced only seconds, the body would age without developing the structures needed to support that passage.

A temporal technique therefore did far more than make something move faster or slower. It altered how many transformations could occur within a given interval while preserving the connection between every state involved.

"Time gives continuity to change," Adrian realized. "The difficulty is not altering the length of a moment. It is ensuring that everything inside that moment still belongs to one existence."

The first Advanced Galactic knowledge fragment opened before his Source Eyes, and the comprehension felt like something he had once known and was only now remembering. Before the zone completed the fragment and showed him the next, Adrian recognized the rule that had to follow it, and when the next strand emerged from the fog, it confirmed the pattern already taking shape within his mind.

One truth awakened another. He recognized why suspending a lifeless object was easier than suspending a cultivator, why a temporal formation became vastly more complex with every consciousness added to it, and why his present Temporal Veil could improve his perception without granting his flesh the same freedom. The chamber responded to each realization by presenting a deeper layer, and the drifting strands began revolving around him in an accelerating spiral.

Adrian's gaze moved through the zone with quiet focus, anticipating relationships before the chamber completed them. Inside the Time chamber of his Source Seed, pale-golden essence stirred and arranged itself into increasingly ordered patterns as Basic Galactic fragments connected with truths that had always remained beyond his reach.

Acceleration, deceleration, suspension, and the separation of internal from external flow gradually lost their identities as individual mysteries. Each was an application of the same deeper law: a cultivator could alter the relationship between moments only by preserving a stable existence across the alteration. When the surrounding fragments converged upon that final principle, Adrian understood that he had reached the last threshold of Advanced Galactic comprehension.

At that instant, every strand of golden essence around him froze.

The stillness reached into Adrian's body and halted even the pale-golden Kaalatva mana flowing through his channels. His Source Eyes narrowed as an ancient presence descended into the chamber, vast enough that the surrounding zone felt like a handful of sparks cast from something immeasurably greater.

Adrian recognized it. Long ago, within the Edge structure, he had caught a premature glimpse of Basic Galactic Time. At that time, the Will of time had answered that intrusion with Time Burn, a backlash that would almost certainly have killed him if the Source had not intervened.

What descended now was the same Will, and Adrian instinctively felt that it had come to test and evaluate him.

Golden echoes separated from Adrian's body.

One retained the posture he had occupied an instant earlier, while another displayed the beginning of a movement he had not yet performed. His heartbeat completed before the breath that should have accompanied it, and memories surfaced within his consciousness outside the order in which he had lived them.

His existence began dividing across incompatible moments.

Adrian understood the test through what the Will had removed. Reality normally maintained a shared present connecting his body, mana, life force, memories, and consciousness. Each process moved at a compatible rate, allowing every part of him to recognize itself as belonging to the same ongoing history.

Now, those relationships had been severed.

Each component of Adrian's existence was being pulled along a different rate within his personal chronology. His blood belonged to one moment, his breath to another, and the thought observing both emerged from a third. If the division continued, there would eventually be no single Adrian to whom the scattered pieces could return.

Before the disorder could deepen, Adrian gathered his perception around the principle he had just comprehended.

He reached toward the separated processes of his existence and began drawing them toward a single continuous present. His intent moved between the breath, heartbeat, mana, memory, life force, and thought, attempting to restore the relationships that allowed them to recognize the same moment.

The golden echoes surrounding him trembled as Adrian forced their histories toward convergence.

Before those divided chronologies could meet, the golden essence of the phenomenon zone folded inward. Walls of unmoving light rose around every echo of Adrian's body, sealing each fragment of his existence within an isolated temporal state.

The Epoch Crucible had begun.

Back within the metallic chamber, Khyron had barely turned away from the second doorway when every monitoring rune before him erupted in dark-golden light. A projection unfolded above his palm, and the indicators tracking Adrian's Kaalatva comprehension climbed through the second threshold so quickly that their individual changes blurred together.

› The Epoch Crucible has been triggered within the Second Level.

Shock crossed Khyron's face. He immediately activated the emergency Return Array, sending a command through every formation connected to the phenomenon zone.

The array failed to respond.

The Epoch Crucible appeared only when a candidate reached the final verification of Advanced Galactic Kaalatva. During that trial, the Will of Time divided the candidate's personal chronology and demanded that they preserve its continuity through comprehension alone.

It was an impartial test faced by every cultivator attempting to truly grasp Advanced Galactic Time. The Will did not distinguish between a talented disciple and an ordinary outsider. Anyone whose understanding failed would suffer the same consequences.

Memories could become permanently disordered. Lifespan could burn away within moments. The cultivation foundation could be returned to an earlier state no longer compatible with the current body, or the consciousness could be torn apart across multiple contradictory histories.

The Return Array existed because even extraordinarily gifted candidates sometimes failed during this process. If their continuity began collapsing, the sect could retrieve them before the damage became irreversible.

Khyron issued another command, but the formation still found nothing it could safely recall.

Space folded beside him before he could attempt a third activation.

A tall woman dressed in dark-golden robes appeared before the projection. Her long black hair had been bound tightly behind her head, while several thin rings of pale light revolved slowly within her eyes.

Khyron turned toward her. "Senior Sister Vaedra."

Vaedra was another personal disciple of Master Roo and the overseer responsible for the advanced thresholds of the Kaalatva Trial.

She assessed the projection with a single glance. "How did a candidate trigger the Crucible without warning? Where is his temporal imprint?"

"I do not know," Khyron replied.

His hands continued moving through the holographic display as he activated the surrounding seals and searched every layer of the trial record. "The candidate entered the second threshold only 6.8 seconds ago. The warning state appeared and vanished within a single monitoring pulse, before the automatic tether could bind itself to his continuity."

Vaedra's hands paused. "He reached final verification in 6.8 seconds?"

"Yes," Khyron confirmed. He expanded the complete record between them, displaying the readings gathered during Adrian's entry into the first threshold. "He arrived with Planetary comprehension. The trial arrays measured it clearly before he was sent into the second level."

Khyron's expression tightened as he examined the impossibly short progression again. "I expected him to possess some familiarity with the concept, but I never imagined he would comprehend the deeper threshold this quickly. His advancement occurred so rapidly that even the Return Array could not protect him."

The formation could not simply preserve an ordinary entry state and restore it later.

A viable imprint required the candidate's emerging Advanced Galactic resonance, because only that resonance remained connected to every divided history after the Will of Time initiated the Epoch Crucible. The Return Array normally activated automatically as a candidate approached final verification, using the brief warning period to record their body, cultivation foundation, life force, consciousness, and the continuity binding them together.

If the test began to destroy that continuity, the formation recalled the candidate to the final intact state and expelled them from the phenomenon zone.

Every trial Khyron had overseen or studied had provided more than enough warning.

Exceptional cultivators required centuries to reach this point, while most spent thousands or tens of thousands of years progressing through the second threshold. Even the final convergence ordinarily unfolded slowly enough for the automated tether to recognize the change and complete its imprint.

But this person's comprehension had passed through the acquisition window before the Return Array could finish recognizing that the window had opened.

Vaedra pressed both palms toward the projection.

Rings of condensed Kaalatva radiated from her hands and entered the chamber's formations. "Seal the surrounding temporal currents and prepare the recovery chamber. Search for any partial imprint that still retains both his consciousness and life force."

"The entry scan cannot function as a return state," Khyron replied, his voice remaining controlled despite the speed with which his hands moved. "The array captured less than one complete temporal cycle after his Advanced Galactic resonance emerged. There is no intact version available to recall."

Vaedra drew the incomplete imprint toward herself and attempted to reinforce it with her own Kaalatva.

The dark-golden radiance inside the projection thickened instantly. Her connection was severed, and every remaining indicator became unreadable.

"The Will of Time has sealed the inner chamber," Vaedra said, withdrawing her hands. "If we attempt to force a return without a complete imprint, the formation may retrieve his body from one moment, his consciousness from another, and his cultivation foundation from a third."

Her expression hardened as she stared at the darkened display. "We would tear apart whatever continuity he still possesses."

Khyron stared at the wall of dark-golden light covering the display.

Only moments earlier, he had regarded this person as an unusually fortunate cultivator from a lesser sector, someone who had encountered a fragment of Kaalatva and used that experience to bypass an elementary threshold. The achievement had been impressive, but it had remained within the realm of possibility.

Now, the inheritance claimed that the same High Rule Stage being had reached the final verification of Advanced Galactic Kaalatva before one of an Upper Major Sect's automatic safeguards could complete its activation.

Vaedra searched the silent projection once more, but no image, temporal state, or response emerged from the sealed phenomenon zone.

For the first time in every trial she had overseen, the Kaalatva Sect possessed no safe method of retrieving a candidate.

This candidate had advanced beyond every protection before the inheritance had been given enough time to preserve even a single recoverable version of him.
