Chapter 254 - The Ebon Meridian Claim

Adrian remained sealed inside the training chamber, studying how to reproduce the perfected structure of Continuity Step without relying upon the will within his white-grey form. While his research continued, a message crossed from Andromeda through Origin's private network and carried Hestia's distant past into the heart of the headquarters.

Hestia sat behind a white desk within the head chamber she used to govern the hidden headquarters. A broad holographic panel hovered above its surface, displaying a routine report from one of the administrative worlds, but she had barely begun reading it when the golden-white lines upon the chamber door separated and Elder Lara entered.

Lara crossed the chamber with measured steps before bowing her head. Her silver-crimson hair fell over one shoulder, and the composure that usually made her the calmest of Hestia's elders remained in place, yet the anger beneath it was too obvious to conceal from her master.

"Master, we received this through the Andromeda headquarters relay moments ago."

With a movement of Lara's hand, a second projection unfolded above the desk. Dense layers of contractual runes appeared within a rectangular hologram, accompanied by several ancient seals and a UNI verification mark. At the top stood the emblem of the Ebon Meridian Sect, followed by the formal title of the agreement they had chosen to resurrect: Ancestral Venture Covenant.

Hestia did not move as she read the opening clauses. The Ebon Meridian Sect had once granted her clan territory, military protection, commercial capital, and access to interstellar markets. In return, her ancestors had accepted fixed resource quotas and surrendered a portion of every transaction conducted beneath the clan's name. Those lines made the agreement appear almost equitable, but Hestia remembered what the precise legal language had concealed.

When the venture failed, its default provisions converted the unresolved balance into hereditary debt stewardship, binding each new generation to obligations it had never chosen. The covenant avoided declaring her people property while granting its creditor control over their land, movement, labor, and future production.

The newly filed complaint followed the same design. An anti-evasion clause carried the obligation through the patriarchal office Hestia had inherited and named the Crimson Vital Sect as her clan's successor estate. Ebon Meridian claimed the right to demand compensation greater than the sect's entire publicly recorded wealth or foreclose upon its worlds, treasury, archives, commercial divisions, artifact reserves, and governing rights. If those assets failed to satisfy the assessed value, the covenant claimed Hestia's personal service for the remainder.

Her gaze moved lower until she found the patriarchal seal that had once passed into her hands. The familiar mark brought back memories she had never forgotten, regardless of how rarely she permitted herself to revisit them.

Within the empire beneath Ebon Meridian, her people had lowered their voices whenever imperial officials entered their settlements. Hestia had eventually understood that remaining would erase the clan more certainly than any escape attempt, so their vessels departed Valtheris carrying families who possessed far more hope than preparation. Half of them died during the first year alone as unsafe routes, damaged formations, hunger, and the hazards of the intergalactic void reduced the refugees with every stage of their flight.

Her own sister had been among those losses. A corrosive cloud swept across the distance between them before the defensive formations could close, and her sister's scream tore through the communication channel as Hestia forced herself toward her. The cloud dissolved her robes first, then ate through skin and flesh in pale, smoking layers until the hand reaching toward Hestia lost its fingers and vanished. Hestia crossed the remaining distance only after there was no body left to save, and a million years had done nothing to weaken the horror of that sight.

Crimson-green radiance escaped Hestia before she became aware that she had released it. The air inside the head chamber grew heavy, the holographic covenant shuddered above the desk, and the reinforced walls vibrated as her Astral presence spread through them. Lara stepped back before instinctively stabilizing herself, but the anger upon her face only deepened.

"How dare they send this?" Lara demanded. "After everything their empire did, after your people were driven into the void and nearly exterminated, they now return and claim that the lives which survived still belong to them?"

Lara was among the very few who knew enough of Hestia's history to understand what the covenant meant beyond its financial clauses. Not long after Lara, Torvain, and Maelis returned from the Azure Garden relic expedition, Hestia had told her three personal disciples how the sanctuary they guarded had truly begun. She had told them enough to understand why the Crimson Vital Sect had never treated protection as an empty promise.

Hestia drew the escaping power back into herself. The weight vanished from the chamber, but her pale golden eyes remained fixed upon the covenant.

"They are not reaching for what survived, Lara," Hestia said. "They are reaching for what we built after their chains failed to kill us."

She closed her eyes for a second, her vision filled with the peaceful Andromeda galaxy she had worked hard for. The crimson spire, Sanguis Prime, their cities, and industries. For most of the past million years, everything Hestia built could survive only because she remained between her people and every power capable of taking it from them. The Andromeda galaxy was the proof that this was no longer a fragile refuge maintained by one woman's vigilance.

"When I fled Valtheris, I possessed barely enough strength to carry the survivors away," Hestia continued as she opened her eyes. "I spent the next million years building a place where no one under my protection would ever need to flee again. That place already exists, and I am no longer searching for someone willing to shelter us. If the Ebon Meridian Sect has mistaken our peace for helplessness, I will correct them."

Lara glanced back toward the projection. "Then why come at all? Elder Adrian made those three Major-Sect envoys carry his warning about the hidden power behind us, and every sect surrounding Andromeda has become cautious since then. Ebon Meridian must know the same reports, yet they still placed an elder outside our gates."

"They know, and that is why they sent only this covenant instead of a fleet." Hestia lifted one hand and enlarged the silver verification mark. Several smaller clauses appeared beneath it, separating authentication, standing, and enforcement into distinct legal classifications. "UNI confirmed the surviving signatures and recognized their right to present the complaint. Ebon Meridian believes that legal standing protects its approach from being treated as an attack."

Lara studied the clauses. "But this is not a UNI-Contract."

"No. UNI has not accepted responsibility for collecting anything, validated the remedies, or ordered us to surrender a single asset. But the surrounding sects fear that Adrian's hidden power may answer force with greater force, while Ebon Meridian expects that same power to hesitate before striking a claimant whose standing was authenticated by UNI." Hestia reduced the projection until only the silver mark remained. "They have mistaken permission to place this covenant before us for a judgment in their favor. That belief in UNI's legal terms is why they are moving while everyone else has chosen caution."

"Then they will learn the difference," Lara replied. "An elder of the Ebon Meridian Sect is presently waiting beyond the Crimson Vital headquarters star system in Andromeda. He transmitted the covenant from there, claims that he knows you, and requested permission to speak with you directly. Our people have kept him outside the system and avoided any hostile response while waiting for your order."

Hestia closed the administrative report that still hovered beside the covenant and rose from behind the desk. The folds of her crimson robes settled around her as she sent both documents into her secured archive.

"We are returning to Andromeda," she said. "I will hear what this elder has to say."

Lara bowed, but she did not immediately turn toward the door. "Should I inform Elder Adrian before we leave?"

Hestia remained still for a moment. Adrian knew that she had once lived beneath a Major Sect's empire and that she had escaped with those willing to follow her. She had spoken with him of her past, yet whenever he asked for the sect's identity or the name of her home galaxy, Hestia had dismissed both as parts of a distant past that no longer deserved his attention.

She kept the names from him because she knew exactly what he would do with them. If Adrian had learned of Ebon Meridian while he still lacked the power to oppose the Anchor-level Astral sovereign who ruled a Lesser Major Sect, he would eventually have found a reason to confront it anyway.

But now, after his recent journey and the battles surrounding the Providence Hub, Adrian possessed the strength to kill an Anchor-level being. If Hestia walked into the training chamber, showed him the covenant, and told him about the Ebon Meridian sect, the research would end before she finished speaking.

But the figure waiting in Andromeda was only an elder carrying a claim. No fleet had crossed the boundary, no disciple had been harmed, and no UNI authority had ordered the Crimson Vital Sect to surrender anything. This was Hestia's past and her sect, and she did not want to pull Adrian away from his work to receive every threat connected to it.

"No. Do not interrupt him for one elder carrying a document," Hestia answered. "I will receive the man myself. Place the covenant in the sealed report waiting for Adrian when he emerges, and if this becomes more than a message, we will alert the chamber immediately."

Lara hesitated for a moment before inclining her head. "Then I will prepare the passage, Master."

They left the head chamber together and entered the golden-white transport current flowing through the Central Origin Construct. It carried them to a secured formation platform, where Hestia opened the route back to Andromeda. Crimson spatial light spread around both women, and the hidden worlds of Virelith disappeared.

Far deeper within the construct, Adrian remained in his white-grey form, studying the corrected rules of Continuity Step as the nested flow carried his thoughts forward far faster than the time beyond his chamber.
