Chapter 293 - Milanese Desparation

March 10th, 7:30 PM Home Dressing Room, The Hawthorns.

UEFA Champions League – Second Leg of the Round of 16.

West Bromwich Albion vs. AC Milan.

(Aggregate: 2-1)

The benefit of winning in Europe is that it makes the aristocrats play by your rules.

AC Milan had based their whole identity on defensive solidity, patience and waiting for the opposition to make a mistake. However, when they arrived in the Black Country in the freezing drizzle for the second leg, their well-known tactical defensive scheme proved completely useless. Since they were behind 2-1 on the aggregate, the Italians were forced to do something which was essentially something they hated: they had to attack.

Ethan Matthews was sitting in his locker and tying on his boots when the Hawthorns was already filled with the noise of twenty-six thousand fans who could smell blood in the water.

He took out his phone.

Group Chat: The Eastfield Boys

Callum: I've been looking into the way Milan arrange themselves when they're trying to win the match. They give up the midfield diamond altogether and push both of their full-backs right up high in order to overload the wings and attempt to overwhelm Thorne and the defence with crosses. Let them occupy the wings, Eth. When they push their players up, their two centre-backs are going to end up completely on their own on the halfway line. Attack them on the counter.

Mason: Cal, you're absolutely right. Let them become desperate. Crestwood secured a huge 1-0 victory on Tuesday night. We stopped pushing and took advantage of the opportunity when they were on the attack. The tactics you use to stay in League One do apply in Europe as well. They're going to leave the back door open and we'll kick the ball straight through it.

Mia: We're in our usual booth again! The pub is booming tonight. Hurry up, Eth! The quarter-finals are waiting!

Ethan: Have them push forward and isolate the centre-backs. Right, lads. We'll show them how the Black Country closes a trap. See you on the other side.

Ethan locked his phone. Callum's scouting was keen, straightforward, and had no academic nonsense at all. It was pure, uncompromising football logic. In order to win the match Milan had to expose their weak point.

When Julian Vance entered the dressing room, all the quiet, nervous talk at once stopped.

"They are uncomfortable," Vance said, his voice a deep, rough baritone. "They have no desire to take the initiative and would rather stay back and control the course of the game, but the scoreboard is preventing them from doing so. They are going to send players forward and are going to leave the kinds of gaps they are not used to leaving."

Vance looked directly into Ethan's eyes.

Don't be drawn into a hectic shootout; take control of the pace, annoy them, make them feel desperate, and when they do finally commit too much, break them.

8:00 PM. Kickoff.

The noise at The Hawthorns was incredibly loud, forming a wall of working-class uproar demanding a European victory.

From the very first whistle AC Milan played with a lack of usual restraint, almost rushing about. Precisely as Callum had forecast, their full-backs advanced forward and entirely gave up their defensive responsibilities in order to push West Brom deep into their own half.

15th Minute.

The pressure was tremendous. Milan were sending in crosses into the area from every possible angle, testing Liam Thorne and the West Brom defence.

A dangerous cross coming in from the inside was aimed at the penalty spot. Thorne rose brilliantly, caught the Milan striker in the air and powered the header towards the edge of the box.

The ball went to a midfielder from Milan, who immediately struck a powerful first-time volley which sliced through the freezing rain and smashed spectacularly into the crossbar.

The stadium drew in its breath as if it had been startled, and that was a terrifying warning.

"Hold the line!" Ethan shouted, waving his arms to bring Lukas Keller and the wingers closer together. "Get them to pass the ball outside! Don't break the formation!"

38th Minute.

The Italians were starting to understand that attempting to play the ball into a penalty area controlled by Liam Thorne was a wasted effort and therefore began to try passing the ball through the centre, going back to their natural tendencies.

But Lukas Keller was a machine of the highest order. The German enforcer was carrying out a perfect shift, moving into the passing lanes, intimidating the elegant Milan playmakers, and winning each and every second ball.

Ethan was happy to let Milan keep the ball. He was carrying out a psychological strategy, aware that each minute that passed without a goal would only increase the Italians' desperation.

Halftime.

West Bromwich Albion 0, AC Milan 0.

(Aggregate: 2-1)

The dressing room was tired but still completely concentrated. The clean sheet was holding.

"They're beginning to panic," Vance said to the squad, as he tapped the tactical board. "Their central defenders are gradually moving higher and higher up the field in an attempt to create a situation. Ethan, the gap is opening. Hold until the trigger is given."

The Second Half.

65th Minute.

The tension in the stadium was unbearable. Milan decided to carry out the siege. They moved their defensive line all the way to the centre circle, leaving huge and obvious empty spaces in their own half.

74th Minute.

The trigger was pulled.

The midfielder who was holding position in Milan, wanting to create an opportunity, attempted to play a difficult, narrow-pass through the defensive line of West Brom.

He telegraphed it perfectly.

Lukas Keller expected the pass, moved forward and made a heavy, crunching interception which caused the ball to come loose and end up right where Ethan was.

The transition was instantaneous.

Ethan raised his head and saw that the centre of the pitch was empty. Milan's full-backs were entirely caught napping and were left deep in West Brom's half.

Ethan didn't attempt to carry the ball, nor did he take a touch to bring it down. He noticed Tyler Hayes switching on his afterburners on the left flank.

Ethan took his right foot and wrapped it around the ball, throwing a powerful and wide fifty-yard pass that completely missed the retreating Milan midfield players.

Hayes rushed the ball forward in a straight line. The championship winger was entirely on his own against a single frightened, experienced Italian centre-back.

Hayes didn't attempt to be clever; he lowered his shoulder, hit the ball past the defender with a straightforward and frightening speed, and rushed forward into the penalty area.

To close the angle the Milan goalkeeper dashed out.

Hayes displayed great composure and played a perfectly balanced square pass across the six-yard box.

Armando rushed towards the back post. He charged at the ball, slid across the damp ground, and knocked it into the fully empty net.

GOAL.

West Bromwich Albion 1, AC Milan 0.

(Aggregate: 3-1)

The Hawthorns didn't merely cheer; they erupted, the noise forming a physical shockwave that shook the foundations of the old stadium.

Ethan remained precisely where he had made the pass, his arms outstretched and a cold, ruthless smile spreading across his face. The trap had been prepared throughout the week and the Italians had simply walked right into it.

85th Minute.

AC Milan totally collapsed. Their spirit was broken by the goal. They had to score two goals just in order to get extra time, and their legs were completely done.

West Brom worsened the situation.

Ethan caught the ball in the centre circle and the Milan midfield was entirely disorganized, jogging back without any kind of structure.

Ethan casually rolled the ball with his studs, fed Jaden Kalu a brilliant and well-disguised pass through the legs of a frustrated Milan defender who was angry.

Kalu drove home the weak defense, cut in towards the inside on his left foot and directed a wonderful, dipping shot into the bottom corner.

GOAL.

West Bromwich Albion 2, AC Milan 0.

(Aggregate: 4-1)

The section at the away end, which was full of Italian fans who had come from elsewhere, started to empty. They had seen enough of it. The Kings of Europe were clearly too strong, too well organised, and altogether too ruthless.

90+3 Minutes.

Whistle. Whistle. Whistle.

Full Time.

West Bromwich Albion 2-0 AC Milan.

West Bromwich Albion reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

The stewards were just about able to prevent the pitch invasion. The noise was a chaotic and beautiful symphony of Black Country pride.

Ethan exchanged shirts with a thoroughly disheartened Milan midfielder. Although the Italians had tried to control the match, they had been completely beaten by a side that knew precisely how to suffer and how to score.

11:15 PM. Penthouse Apartment, Birmingham.

Ethan put his kit bag next to the door, the adrenaline then being replaced by a deep and satisfying fatigue.

He took out his phone.

Group Chat: The Eastfield Boys

Mason: ABSOLUTE MASTERCLASS! You completely did them, General! The counter-attack for the first goal was ruthless. The pub is a total write-off. They've broken another table.

Callum: The exploitation of their high defensive line was tactically flawless, Eth. By maintaining a disciplined low block, you forced their center-backs into a highly vulnerable spatial position. Once Keller won the turnover, the vertical transition was unplayable.

Mia: I'm hoarse again! We are in the Quarter-Finals! Unbelievable performance, Eth. We are so proud.

Ethan: You called it perfectly, Cal. The second they pushed their full-backs up, the middle was completely empty. Mase, tell the pub to save some beer for the weekend.

Mason: No promises, mate. You're in the final eight of Europe. The crown is staying exactly where it belongs.

Ethan locked the phone and let his head fall back against the sofa cushions. The tactical cages of Italy had been broken. The Dictator of The Hawthorns had navigated the first knockout hurdle with brutal efficiency.

The quarter-finals were waiting, and the machine was hungry for more.
