Chapter 17 - Chapter 16: Sparks and Strain

The morning light slanted through the cracks in the safehouse roof, dust motes dancing in the warmth. Nyasha stood in the center of the training circle, hands trembling. The Emberheart pulsed faintly against her chest, like it was impatient to be unleashed.

Kofi crouched across from her, arms folded, face unreadable. "Try not to set the floor on fire today," he muttered. His voice was gruff, but the faint twitch at the corner of his mouth suggested he expected a disaster anyway.

Zara perched on a beam overhead, twirling a dagger lazily. "Or the walls. Or your eyebrows. Pretty sure the last one's personal preference, though."

Nyasha clenched her fists. "I can control it. I just—" She paused, yanking her sleeve down as a tiny flare escaped and singed it black. "—need to focus."

Kofi sighed, standing. "Focus isn't thinking. Focus is feeling the fire without letting it bite you. Again!"

Nyasha let out a frustrated groan. She tried to push the Emberheart's flame outward in a controlled sphere. It wobbled, jittered like a live thing, and then shot straight toward Zara's beam.

"Watch out!" Zara shouted, flipping sideways as the flame licked past her shoulder.

Nyasha's cheeks burned—not from the Emberheart, but embarrassment. "I said I could control it!"

"Control, yes," Kofi said, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Not… whatever that was."

Taye, leaning against a wall with a water bucket ready, mumbled, "It's… kind of beautiful?"

Nyasha bit back a laugh, despite herself. Even Kofi's stern glare couldn't hide the faint amusement tugging at his lips.

They started again. Kofi instructed her to channel the Emberheart into smaller, precise bursts—sparks that could light lanterns without melting the metal, controlled heat waves to push back small objects without destruction.

Hours passed in sweat, smoke, and repeated failures. Flames curled unpredictably, sending Taye scrambling for cover once, Zara swearing twice, and Nyasha swearing at least ten times under her breath. But slowly, ever so slowly, she learned to listen to the fire instead of just forcing it.

By the end of the day, she could ignite a small circle of flame in her palms, coiling like obedient snakes, responding to her every twitch of muscle or flick of thought. She collapsed onto the ground, chest heaving, her hands glowing faintly.

Kofi crouched beside her. "Your mother never fought for herself. She fought for those who couldn't. If you want to be more than just flames and fury, remember that. You are more than that."

Nyasha's lips curved, tired but proud. "Then I'll learn to be more than flames… I'll learn to be fire."

Zara dropped beside her, tossing a dagger onto the floor. "Good. Just… maybe leave the street outside for practice, yeah?"

Nyasha laughed softly, exhaustion mingling with resolve. She was still imperfect, still clumsy, still human. But for the first time, she felt like the Emberheart and she were moving toward the same rhythm.

Outside, Umbra's Gate waited, unaware that the Ashen Heir was learning not just to burn—but to burn with purpose
