Chapter 162 - Chapter 162: Justice, and Captain Coby's Promise

Chapter 162: Justice, and Captain Coby's Promise

"Shhh!"

The dark-haired girl in the white beret held a finger to her lips, shushing Kaito with a sound that was far louder than any he had been making. Her face was a mask of panic. She glanced outside at the patrolling guards who had just initiated a lockdown, then grabbed Kaito's uninjured left hand and tried to pull him into the dark, open sewer.

She tugged twice, but he didn't move. She finally looked up, sizing up the miserable-looking foreigner whose right arm was completely charred.

"Hey, big guy! If we don't hide, God will smite you again!" Even though she was trying to whisper, the fear in her eyes was palpable.

[Main Quest Initiated]

[Main Quest 1: Survive for 30 days in the Kingdom of God.]

[Main Quest 2: Kill at least one member of an enemy team.]

[NOTE: The second wave of teams will arrive in 10 days.]

[NOTE: The third wave of teams will arrive in 20 days.]

[Main Quest 3: Ensure your team's score is positive at the end of the mission. Current Provisional Team Score: -7]

[Side Quest: Find the lost City of Gold.]

Kaito stared at the belatedly-appearing notifications, his muscles still spasming. If there was one thing faster than [Setsuna], it was lightning.

He had expected to encounter Enel and the Rumble-Rumble Fruit after getting the [Map to El Dorado]. But when he had spawned on the beach, the vast sea and the blue sky had told him he was in the Blue Sea. As such, when the battle had started, he hadn't immediately realized what was happening.

When that high-voltage attack had come, he had instantly activated [Stage Three Setsuna] and fled. But the lightning had still carbonized his right arm. The voltage was on a completely different level from that "superpower awakening" device.

It had taken him less than three seconds to disappear from the beach and into the jungle, where he had used his powerful physique to simply crash his way through the trees and vanish. It was a good thing the other Reincarnators had drawn most of Enel's attention; otherwise, his only choice would have been to push to an even higher stage of Setsuna and try to run across the ocean.

Kaito looked down at the girl, who was no taller than seventy centimeters. In his eyes, she was as fragile as a doll. But at this moment, this doll was stubbornly trying to drag him into a sewer. His ear twitched. He could indeed hear the shouts of a search party in the distance. He moved, and with a light leap, he dropped into the dark manhole.

The girl carefully put her beret into a pouch at her waist, then strained to pull the heavy manhole cover back into place. Only then did she climb down the ladder.

SPLASH!

She jumped from the last rung, landing in the dirty water with a loud splash. She seemed happy, even deliberately stomping in the murky water a few times, before she looked up at Kaito, who was standing on a pipe, and gave him an embarrassed smile.

Naive. Childish. This was Kaito's assessment of the plot character who was trying to "save" him.

"Let's go, big guy! Are you one of those… Navy guys? Or a pirate?" She began to walk through the water, deliberately making loud splashing noises. Kaito, meanwhile, as if he couldn't feel the pain from his arm, was walking along a narrow pipe with perfect balance. He gave her a vague, noncommittal answer, his mind already racing, processing the situation.

This was clearly a very bloody "Team Battle World." The main quest directly required you to kill enemy team members, and your final score had to be positive. It was a zero-sum game. There was no possibility of peace. Some teams had to be sacrificed. And the number of teams in this world was immense. It was the most populated mission world Kaito had ever been in. Just the first wave, the group he had spawned with on the beach, had been seven or eight people.

Tsk. Did the Nexus really just lump a bunch of us randoms together and call us a "team"?!

While they had been given the advantage of arriving first, a group of small, disorganized teams stood no chance against a truly coordinated one. And thanks to that idiot with the dreadlocks, who had started shooting without any communication, the entire group had descended into a chaotic free-for-all and had been subsequently wiped out by [Enel].

Kaito had started the mission with a score of -7.

"How… unprincipled," he muttered. He now realized that the dreadlocked man's actions had likely been intentional. He had been trying to disrupt any attempt at communication from the very beginning. And as he had "fled," he had been deliberately taking potshots at the other teams, which was how he had drawn Kaito's attention in the first place.

But while Reincarnators had their schemes, the plot characters didn't care. On this island, the Reincarnators were not in control. Enel, a villain often criticized as being nothing without his Devil Fruit, was the perfect example of how a single, overpowered Devil Fruit could make you a terrifying opponent. The [Rumble-Rumble Fruit], even among the most powerful Logia-types of the early Grand Line, was top-tier. It granted the speed of lightning, the power to summon hundred-million-volt lightning strikes, and complete immunity to all attacks besides the sea, Sea-Prism Stone, and Haki.

It also had numerous other applications, such as restarting one's own heart with electricity, or using the heat from the current for metalworking. And when combined with Enel's own natural talent for Observation Haki, which manifested as his [Mantra], he could perceive the entire sky island, hearing every conversation. (Though he likely couldn't process all that information and only focused on those who spoke his name.) And in close combat, this Mantra was a form of mind-reading.

"Yo, kid! You saved another piece of trash?"

A man in a blood-stained white Marine uniform, wearing a Marine cap, walked out from a corner, sneering at the girl. She turned her head, ignoring him. But the man was not satisfied. He stepped in front of her, blocking her path.

"Didn't I tell you, kid? No one is coming here! Not the Marines, not the pirates!"

"This is a kingdom that doesn't even exist on the charts! It's not affiliated with the World Government! Even if we all die here, no reinforcements are coming!"

He grabbed the girl's clothes, shaking her, as if trying to shake out his own fear.

The girl suddenly twisted and punched him squarely on his high-bridged nose. The man cried out in pain. She dropped to the ground, kicked his knee, and then quickly ran behind him, waving at Kaito.

"Quick, big guy! Don't listen to him! Captain Coby will come back and save us! It was his promise to Petty Officer Cindy!"

As she ran, she turned and gave a sharp salute to the distant sky. Kaito now saw that on the back of her white shirt, which had been torn in her scuffle with the Marine, were two words, scrawled in black ink:

JUSTICE.
