Chapter 45 - Part 3 - Chapter 5 - Double Time

The ultrasound room was quiet, save for the steady, rhythmic whoosh-whoosh of the baby's heartbeat filling the space. Emaira lay on the exam table, Taemin holding her hand tightly, his eyes fixed on the grainy black-and-white screen. The sonographer moved the wand with a practiced hand.

"And there's the head… good measurements… and the spine looks perfect…" she murmured, clicking buttons to take images.

Emaira squeezed Taemin's hand, a smile on her face. Each appointment was a miracle, a glimpse into their secret world.

The sonographer moved the wand slightly, her brow furrowing just a fraction. She was quiet for a moment, moving the device again. Taemin's grip tightened instinctively.

"Is everything alright?" he asked, his voice tense.

The sonographer smiled, a genuine, bright thing. "Oh, everything is more than alright." She turned the screen slightly toward them. "See that right there? That's one beautiful, healthy baby."

She moved the wand again, a little to the left. "And see that right there? That's another beautiful, healthy baby."

The world stopped.

Silence. Absolute, deafening silence.

Emaira's brain refused to process the words. Another?

Taemin stared at the screen, his mouth slightly agape. He looked from one pulsing, white blob to the other. He blinked. Then blinked again.

"Two?" The word came out as a strangled whisper.

"Twins!" the sonographer said cheerfully, clearly enjoying their shock. "Congratulations!"

Emaira's hand flew to her mouth. Tears, immediate and overwhelming, sprang to her eyes. She looked at Taemin, whose face had gone through a rapid series of emotions: shock, disbelief, sheer terror, and then, finally, a dawning, awe-struck joy so immense it seemed to light him from within.

"Twins," he repeated, this time with more force. He looked at Emaira, his eyes wide. "Jagiya. We're having… two."

He started to laugh then, a breathless, incredulous sound. He leaned over and kissed her forehead, her cheeks, her lips, laughing against her skin. "Two! Of course we are. We don't do anything by halves, do we?"

The news settled over them like a blizzard of glitter—chaotic, dazzling, and utterly magical. Their quiet interlude was over, replaced by the thrilling, terrifying prospect of double everything.

They decided to tell the SRS members in person, inviting them all to the house for a rare, casual dinner. The air was filled with the comfortable, brotherly camaraderie that came from over a decade of shared history.

Once everyone was settled with food and drinks, Taemin stood up, tapping his glass lightly.

"We, uh… we had a doctor's appointment this week," he began, trying and failing to suppress a grin.

Joon, ever the leader, looked concerned. "Is everything okay?"

"Better than okay," Emaira said, her hand resting on her belly.

Taemin puffed out his chest, a look of pure, unadulterated pride on his face. "It turns out," he announced, "that Taeira Productions is extremely efficient."

The members looked confused.

"We're producing two features at once," Taemin clarified, his eyes sparkling with mischief.

It took a second. Then, chaos erupted.

Jinu was the first to break, sputtering into his drink. "Yah! Kim Taemin! What did you do?!"

Joon's jaw dropped. Seok hun let out a loud, bark-like laugh, clapping his hands. The others erupted into a chorus of shouts, laughter, and congratulations, surging forward to hug them both.

It was Jinu who slung an arm around Taemin's shoulders, a wicked grin on his face. "I always knew you were a perfectionist, Taemin-ah," he teased, his voice full of mock admiration. "But two for the price of one? You really don't like to leave anything to chance, do you? You've got to show me your time management skills, you overachiever."

Taemin's ears turned red, but he was beaming, accepting the good-natured ribbing with a shrug. "What can I say, hyung? When I commit to a project, I give it my all."

Later that night, after their friends had left, the house felt both emptier and fuller. They stood in the soon-to-be nursery, now destined for two cribs.

"Twins," Emaira whispered, the reality still sinking in.

Taemin came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her and resting his hands on her swollen stomach, which now made so much more sense. "A son and a daughter," he said, his voice full of wonder. "Our little shadows."

He turned her in his arms, his expression soft and serious. "It's going to be twice the chaos. Twice the noise. Twice the worry."

She smiled up at him, her heart so full it felt like it might burst. "And twice the love."

He kissed her then, a slow, sweet kiss that held the promise of their wild, wonderful, double-time future. Their symphony had just gotten a whole lot more interesting.
