The fire crackled softly.
She could hear his breath; uneven, heavy, like he'd been holding it for hours.
"If you want to save the people, you can do it without killing yourself in the process."
"I'm not..."
"Yes, you are!" The words broke out of him, harsher than he meant. "You're tired. Sometimes, you can barely climb the stairs without going out of breath. You hide your pain from me like I wouldn't notice. And you keep pretending it's fine because you think you're untouchable."
He dragged a hand through his hair, his voice rough. "You're not. You're mine. And you're carrying our child. Do you have any idea what it does to me to see you risk that?"
