Arin watched her closely.
"Try me," he said again. "I don't think anything else today can shock me."
Daphne didn't answer him right away.
She turned to Alaric instead. She held his sleeve.
"Ric," she said softly, "I… I don't know if I'm supposed to say this with... Arin here."
Arin looked from her to Alaric, then back again. He didn't interrupt. He just waited.
Alaric's jaw tightened, but his voice stayed calm. "Talk," he said. "Whatever it is, say it."
Daphne nodded.
"Do you remember," she began, then paused, "what I told you before? About my… last life."
Arin frowned. "Last life?" he repeated, confused.
Alaric answered for her. "Yes."
Daphne swallowed. "I told you pieces of it. I said I was married then."
Arin's brows pulled together.
Daphne hesitated again and looked back at Alaric. "I said I was married to..." She stopped. "Ric, I really don't think I should say his name with him standing right here."
Something shifted in Arin's expression. Slowly, his eyes widened.
