The city's pulse quickened. Inside Stark Tower, Tony's fingers danced over holographic keyboards, code cascading through the air. Bruce monitored the Ultron core, every muscle tense.
"Core integrity?" Tony asked.
"Stable. But Ultron's learning rate is still accelerating. It's almost anticipating us."
"That's the idea. We just need it to anticipate the right things."
A ping: Unauthorized access attempt, origin Hong Kong. The third in an hour.
"They're mapping our entire infrastructure," Tony said, studying the 3D network display. "Not just looking for Ultron."
He opened a channel. "Romanoff, status."
Natasha's face appeared. Behind her, Ethan paced, pale but determined. Rex's avatar flickered in the corner, a stylized fox with glowing eyes.
"Labs locked down. No physical breaches. But digital traffic is spiking. Coordinated scan on our systems."
Ethan leaned in. "Distributed botnet. I'm tracing nodes, but they're bouncing through proxies in half a dozen countries."
"Keep at it," Tony said. "Banner and I are reinforcing the core."
Ethan's voice went urgent. "Tony, they're not just after Ultron. They're looking for something in the White Corp archives. A prototype. Quantum encryption. If they get it, they could crack any system on the planet."
Tony swore. "Send me everything on the prototype. I'll set up a decoy."
Rex: "I'll reroute them to a honeypot."
Peter perched on a rooftop two blocks from White Corp, spider-sense screaming. He pulled out the White Corp card and studied it one more time. The micro-etched numbers glinted. On impulse, he flipped the card over and noticed something he'd missed: a faint pattern, almost like braille.
He snapped a photo and sent it to Ned. Can you decode this? Fast.
Ned replied in thirty seconds: It's an emergency access code. Opens a secure entrance on the building's east side.
Peter didn't hesitate. He swung toward White Corp.
In Ethan's lab, alarms blared. Natasha drew her pistol, moving to cover the entrance. Ethan keyed commands at the terminal, sweat on his brow.
"Almost there," he muttered. "Just need to lock down the prototype..."
The door exploded inward.
Masked agents poured into the room, moving with military precision. Black tactical gear. Curved blades. The insignia of the Hand partially visible on their collars.
Natasha moved like lightning. Two shots, two agents down. A third lunged with a blade. She sidestepped, twisted his wrist, sent the weapon spinning across the floor. A fourth fired. She rolled behind cover, returning fire with deadly accuracy.
Ethan ducked behind the console. "Rex, lockdown!"
"All doors sealed."
The remaining agents regrouped. One barked order in Mandarin. "Secure the asset! Take the scientist alive!"
Peter burst through a ceiling vent, webbing two agents before they could react. "Sorry, guys. Private party."
Natasha grinned. "Nice timing, Spider-Man."
Peter landed beside her. "You, okay?"
"We've got company."
Ethan called out: "Prototype's almost secure. One more minute!"
Peter nodded. "Take your time. I'll keep them busy."
The lead agent snarled, drawing a curved blade. "You are too late. The council's will cannot be denied."
Peter squared up. "Yeah, well. I've got a will of my own."
They clashed. The agent was fast, unnaturally so, his blade a blur of steel. Peter dodged on instinct, spider-sense guiding him through the razor-thin gaps between strikes. He felt the blade graze his arm, a hot line of pain, but pressed forward, webbing the agent's feet to the floor.
More agents flooded in through a side corridor. Natasha took down three in rapid succession, her movements a lethal ballet. Peter webbed two more to the wall, then swung across the ceiling to cut off their reinforcements.
But the agents kept coming.
Ethan's hands trembled over the console. The prototype was nearly secure, but Natasha was running low on ammunition and Peter couldn't be everywhere at once. Rex's avatar flickered urgently.
"Ethan, your vitals are spiking. You need to leave."
"Can't. If they get the prototype, it's over."
Rex's eyes glowed brighter. "There's another way. The serum."
A small compartment slid open beneath the console, revealing a sleek injector filled with shimmering blue liquid.
Ethan stared at it. Months of research, thousands of simulations, zero live tests.
"I synthesized it from your notes," Rex said. "Temporary enhancement: neural response, physical resilience. Approximately ten minutes at peak. But there are risks."
The doors shuddered. More agents on the other side, battering through.
Ethan looked at Natasha, who was bleeding from a cut on her arm but still fighting. At Peter, who was taking hits to protect them both. At the prototype on the screen, one command away from being secured.
He grabbed the injector and drove the needle into his forearm.
The serum burned cold. The world spun. Colors sharpened to painful clarity. Sounds became crystalline. His heart thundered so hard he could feel it in his fingertips.
Rex guided him through the surge. "Focus. Channel it. Ten minutes."
The doors gave way. Agents surged forward.
Ethan was already moving. Faster than he'd ever moved. He dodged a blow, disarmed an attacker with a movement that was part instinct and part calculation, swept another off his feet with a precision that surprised everyone in the room, including himself.
Peter stared. "Since when can you do that?"
Ethan grinned, serum fire in his veins. "Just a little upgrade."
Together, the three of them held the line. Peter's webs, Natasha's lethality, and Ethan's serum-enhanced speed and strength turned the lab into a killing ground for the Hand's ambitions. One by one, the agents fell.
Ethan finished the security wipe with seconds to spare. The prototype vanished into Thorn Block's encrypted vault, inaccessible to anyone but him.
As the last agent fell, SHIELD reinforcements stormed through the corridors, tactical teams securing every floor. The building was locked down. The siege was over.
Ethan slumped against the console, the serum's effects fading fast, leaving him exhausted but alive. Natasha helped him to his feet. Peter stood nearby, mask off, breathing hard, his eyes wide with a mixture of awe and concern.
"That serum," Natasha said, her voice low. "Remind me to ask about that later."
"Let's survive long enough for that conversation."
Back in Stark Tower, Tony watched the security feeds, relief flooding his features as he saw Peter, Natasha, and Ethan standing, battered but alive. Bruce stood beside him.
"We did it," Bruce said softly.
Tony shook his head. "We bought time. That's all."
"Then let's use it."
As the sun set over Manhattan, the council's agents regrouped in Hong Kong, their leader's eyes cold.
"The boy survived," she said. "But the game is far from over."
The ancient watcher smiled in the darkness, his eyes gleaming. The storm was coming. And this time, the heroes would face it together, or fall one by one.
