Chapter 14 - The Unwelcome Visitor

The following week was strangely calm.

Amara found herself slipping back into routine, burying herself in work, forcing her mind to stay focused. Daniel was patient, checking in without smothering her, giving her space while reminding her he was near. For a moment, she dared to believe things could go back to normal.

Until Friday evening.

The office was nearly empty, most staff already gone for the weekend. Amara stayed behind to finish a report, tapping away at her keyboard, unaware of the storm that was about to crash into her fragile peace.

A shadow fell across her desk.

"Working late, as always," a familiar voice drawled.

Her blood froze.

Slowly, she lifted her gaze. Chike.

He stood there in a crisp shirt, sleeves rolled casually to his elbows, his smile confident, mocking, as though nothing had happened between them. As though years of pain could be erased with his presence.

Amara's breath caught in her throat. Her hands trembled against the keyboard.

"What are you doing here?" she whispered.

Chike leaned against her desk, ignoring the edge in her tone. "Relax, sweetheart. I'm not here to cause trouble. Just thought we could talk."

Her chest tightened. "There's nothing to talk about. Leave."

Instead of leaving, he smirked, lowering his voice. "You've changed. Stronger. I like it. But don't forget, Amara—I know the real you. The girl who cried when I wasn't around. The one who begged me to stay."

Tears stung her eyes, not from longing but from rage. "That girl doesn't exist anymore."

His expression hardened, a flicker of something darker surfacing beneath the charm. "We'll see about that."

"Is there a problem here?"

The voice came from behind them—deep, calm, but carrying a sharp edge.

Daniel.

Amara's heart lurched with relief and fear all at once. He had returned to fetch her, noticing she hadn't left yet.

Chike straightened, his smirk fading into a challenge. "And you must be the new… friend."

Daniel's gaze was steady, unreadable, but his body was taut, ready. "I'll ask once. Leave."

For a long moment, tension crackled in the air. Chike's jaw tightened. His eyes flicked between them, calculating. Then, with a scoff, he stepped back.

"Fine. But this isn't over." His words were low, deliberate, meant for Amara. "You can't erase history. I'll be around."

He left without another word, the echo of his footsteps fading down the hall.

Amara's legs gave way. She sank back into her chair, trembling.

Daniel crouched beside her, his hand brushing against hers. "Are you alright?"

Her throat constricted. She wanted to say yes, to appear strong. But the truth slipped out instead. "No. I'm terrified."

Daniel's eyes softened. He reached up, cupping her face gently. "You don't ever have to face him alone again. Do you hear me?"

She nodded weakly, tears spilling down her cheeks.

Daniel hesitated, then pulled her into his arms. The embrace was firm, steady, grounding her in a way nothing else could. For the first time, she let herself lean into him fully, burying her face against his chest.

But even as warmth spread through her, a chilling thought lingered.

Chike wasn't going away quietly.

And this was only the beginning.
