Chapter 10 - EPISODE 10

The weight of defeat hung heavily in the air as the Ikorodu City FC team grappled with the aftermath of their loss to Gombe United. The disheartening result marked an inauspicious start to their NPFL season, leaving players and staff alike searching for answers. Amid the somber atmosphere, Coach Kalu steeled himself for the impending press conference, his words poised to carry the burden of their collective disappointment.

As Bolaji ushered Coach Kalu into the bustling press room, the atmosphere crackled with anticipation. Journalists and camera crews clamored for prime positions, their eagerness to dissect the game palpable. Flashes erupted as the coach took his seat, his expression a portrait of calm determination amidst the storm.

Bolaji's voice rang out above the din, inviting questions from the assembled media. "Does anyone have any questions for the Coach?" he inquired, prompting a flurry of raised hands. Bolaji gestured towards Ayo, a promising young journalist from the Sports Gazette. Ayo rose, his gaze fixed on Coach Kalu as he prepared to pose his inquiry.

"Coach, how does it feel to begin your coaching career in the NPFL?" Ayo asked, his voice steady and assured.

Coach Kalu leaned forward, his tone measured and introspective. "This isn't how I wanted to start. I was excited going into the game, but we didn't get the result we hoped for. It's an experience, and we'll learn from it, make adjustments, and improve where we need to."

Bolaji's eyes scanned the room, inviting further inquiries. "Alright, does anyone else have questions for the boss?" he asked. A sea of hands shot up, prompting Bolaji to select a journalist from the Daily Pitch.

The woman began her inquiry, her voice firm and direct. "I'm Bridget. Coach, you claimed that this team is the true challenger, but today's defeat doesn't exactly align with the expectations set by your words after your appointment. Can we genuinely trust this project?"

Coach Kalu responded with a warm smile, his demeanor composed. "It's still only the beginning of the season. One defeat doesn't define us; there are plenty of games left to be played, and we'll bounce back. You can trust the project and the work we're putting into it."

Bolaji nodded in acknowledgment, turning his attention once more to the journalists assembled before him. Only one hand remained raised, and with a subtle nod, Bolaji invited the journalist from the Intercontinental Planet to speak.

"Coach," Rose began, her tone professional and concise, "according to the fixtures, our next opponents are Kano Pillars, followed by Eyimba FC. How do you plan to prepare the team for these tough matches?"

Coach Kalu chuckled, a hint of amusement coloring his response. "When I first found out about our next two games, I burst out laughing. Kano Pillars and Eyimba FC are undoubtedly tough opponents, but they're not unbeatable. We're a team of human beings, just like them. We just need to play our game and believe in ourselves to secure the victories."

Ayo rose from his chair, the squeak of the plastic a jarring interruption in the quiet room. "Coach," he began, his voice cutting through the stale air. "The games so far have made it obvious. The team is weak against set pieces. How do you plan to tackle such an obvious weakness against Kano Pillars?"

Coach Kalu cleared his throat, a slow, deliberate sound. "Well," he said, his gaze fixed somewhere over Ayo's shoulder, "Weaknesses are not something we defeat easily. It's a gradual process. We are aware of these issues and we are working to improve that aspect of our game."

The answer felt like a practiced, rehearsed speech – a wall built of vague promises, designed to deflect rather than address

As Coach Kalu's words hung in the air, Bolaji stepped forward to conclude the press conference. "Alright, we've come to the end of this conference. Thank you all, and goodnight," he announced, signaling an end to the evening's proceedings.

The room erupted into a cacophony of activity as journalists and camera crews gathered their belongings, eager to relay the latest developments in the world of NPFL football. Coach Kalu and Bolaji made their way through the dissipating crowd, the weight of their next challenge already palpable as they prepared to navigate the trials that awaited them in the days to come.
