Chapter 69 - 69: Unexpected Observations

Knock, knock, knock—

Hearing the somewhat familiar knocking, Newt set down his coffee and quickly walked to the door.

He couldn't help but wonder if it was Lucien again, the young man sending another letter through that magical messenger.

In fact, Newt had felt a bit regretful after the magical creature who called himself Lumen left last time.

It had been the first time he'd ever seen a creature like that—an entirely unknown magical being unlike any he had encountered before.

However, because the creature's way of communicating was so human-like, Newt hadn't taken the chance to properly observe or study him.

Instead, his wife Tina had done most of the talking with Lumen.

That left Newt with a faint sense of loss, and over the next few days, an unbearable curiosity itched at his heart.

He opened the door.

Standing before him was the mysterious Lumen once again. Unlike the last time, the morning sunlight made the creature shimmer with a radiant golden glow.

A look of surprise immediately appeared in Newt's eyes.

"Good morning, Mr. Newt."

"Oh, oh—good morning, Lumen. Please, come in."

Lumen followed Newt into the house with practiced ease.

"Is it a letter from Lucien?"

Lumen nodded, letting a cloud of auspicious light carry a small satchel toward Newt.

"Mr. Newt, everything my master asked me to deliver is in the bag."

Things?

So it wasn't just a letter. Newt picked up the satchel and immediately noticed the Undetectable Extension Charm cast upon it.

He drew his wand and levitated the items inside, letting them float out one by one.

The first to appear was a small cedarwood bottle, which Newt instinctively caught.

Next came an envelope, which drifted neatly into his hand.

But that wasn't all—sheets of paper filled with writing began flying out of the bag's opening.

Newt guided them onto the desk. The papers quickly piled up to over ten centimeters, and Newt began to feel something was off, unsure what exactly that young man had sent him.

Yet the pages kept coming, fluttering out like snowflakes, as if endlessly pouring from the small satchel.

When the stream finally stopped, Newt looked up at the towering stack of papers that nearly reached the ceiling.

Although the papers were all stacked neatly on the table, wasn't this amount a bit excessive?

Newt glanced at the small wooden bottle and the envelope in his hand, deciding to read the letter first. He set the bottle aside on the desk.

"Uh, Lumen, find a place to sit—I'll just read…"

Before he could finish speaking, Newt realized he had subconsciously treated the creature as a person. Where could such a large magical creature even sit?

"Okay, thank you."

The next moment, Newt watched as Lumen shrank in size until it was no bigger than a house cat, then leapt onto a pale yellow cloud of mist, reclining on it gracefully.

The sight made Newt momentarily forget about the letter.

"Size-changing—similar to an Occamy's ability?"

A cloud of mist that can support solid weight… could it be used for flying? As a messenger, it should be able to fly, right?

"Yes, I can fly."

Lumen's airy voice echoed directly in Newt's mind, leaving him a little embarrassed.

It felt as though someone had just answered his inner thoughts aloud.

Newt said nothing further, but Lumen still remembered its master's instruction—to have a proper conversation with Mr. Newt.

"Mr. Newt, I can indeed change my shape, but… is an Occamy a magical creature? My master hasn't taught me about those yet."

"Uh, yes, it is—a magical creature that can change its body size according to the size of its surroundings. Lucien's teaching you this kind of knowledge?"

"Yes, he started teaching me a few days ago. He said it would help me recognize them later."

Newt didn't know how to respond to that. A human wizard teaching a magical creature how to identify other magical creatures?

He decided to steer away from the topic and began reading the letter in his hand.

When he saw Lucien mention that he had successfully created an Undetectable Extension Charm container capable of holding living creatures, Newt nodded in satisfaction.

He hadn't expected the young wizard to progress so quickly. It seemed Lucien had remarkable talent in both Charms and Alchemy, with a solid foundation in related studies.

As for the question about the elements required for cultivating plants...

Newt knew the answer to that. It wasn't related to any family secrets, so he could certainly share it with him.

Still, he couldn't help but wonder—was this junior also a Hufflepuff?

To want to grow plants inside an Undetectable Extension Charm container… that sounded like something a little badger would do.

Newt realized he had forgotten to ask in his last reply and still didn't know which house Lucien belonged to.

Continuing to read, he saw that Lucien had mentioned sending along some materials—his usual observation notes on magical creatures—though he claimed there weren't many…

Not many?

Newt glanced at the towering stack of papers on the table, his expression turning a bit odd.

Looking back at the letter, he couldn't help but wonder if Lucien had included something besides magical creature records—otherwise, how could there be such a massive pile?

But as he finished reading, there was no mention of any other materials.

Recalling the curious and earnest tone in Lucien's letter, Newt felt he couldn't let down the boy's enthusiasm and passion for magical creatures.

He summoned the top few sheets, took a sip of coffee, and began to read.

Mooncalf…

Newt's reading speed was quick—not because he was being careless, but because he was already so familiar with these creatures that he could instantly spot any errors.

He continued summoning more papers, skimming through them until he finished all the records related to Mooncalves.

There were no major issues. Newt pulled out a blank sheet of parchment and jotted down a few corrections regarding the Mooncalf's information.

Next, he turned to the notes on the Diricawl.

But this time, as he read, Newt felt something slightly off.

Compared to the Mooncalf record, this one on the Diricawl was far more detailed and vivid.

It was as if the recorder had observed a living Diricawl up close.

Some of the details described would have been impossible to notice from afar.

After quickly finishing those notes, Newt added a few minor corrections to the parchment—this time, much fewer than before.

Next came the Flobberworm.

Reading through the vivid and detailed descriptions, Newt couldn't help but nod.

Like the Diricawl, they're relatively easy to approach—gentle magical creatures.

Lucien must be a Hufflepuff child. He seems to have a natural way with animals… or perhaps even a gift for it.

After jotting down the relevant corrections, Newt summoned the next set of papers.

He picked up his coffee, ready to take a sip, when his eyes caught the heading on the next page.

Acromantula…

"Cough, cough, cough—!"

Newt quickly set down his cup, coughing as the words sank in.

No, what kind of magical creatures did that child usually observe?

Why did it include 5X-class Acromantulas?

Newt waved his wand, summoning all the notes related to Acromantulas.

Instantly, the towering pile of papers shrank by more than a third.

Newt's eyelids twitched uncontrollably.

As he flipped through the pages, his reading pace slowed more and more.

There was no helping it—the records on Acromantulas were incredibly detailed.

They covered specimens from nearly every stage of life—from hatchlings to juveniles, from developing to fully grown adults, and even the elderly.

Not only that, but they were categorized by gender as well, each with its own set of observations.

This Lucien… where did he find so many Acromantulas?

Newt couldn't imagine how a Hogwarts student could come into contact with such a large number of those spiders.

And not just contact—Acromantulas were highly dangerous. Surviving long enough to record this level of detail was an achievement in itself.

To observe so much and with such precision… how much time and risk did Lucien have to take…
