Several months later, the lair beneath Gotham buzzed with quiet precision. The faint hum of machinery, the rhythmic pulse of servers, and the subtle vibration of hydroponic tanks gave the underground headquarters an almost living heartbeat. Above, the gleaming Midnight Industries Tower reached high into the skyline, its silver-black frame a symbol of "innovation" for the public—and a monument to criminal empire beneath.
Barbara sat at her workstation, her reflection caught in a row of sleek holographic displays. The words MIDNIGHT INDUSTRIES: EXECUTIVE OPS NETWORK hovered in front of her as she spoke aloud, almost rehearsing. "After several fruitful burglaries and corporate subversions, Midnight Mayhem now stands atop Gotham's criminal hierarchy... the clandestine foundation beneath the glittering tower of Midnight Industries."
Pamela stepped out from behind a row of glowing green grow-pods, her eyebrow raised. "Barbara, you're monologuing again."
Barbara blinked and turned slightly. "Oh—sorry. I just thought I should give an update in the lair about what we've been up to these last few months."
Pamela smiled faintly and crossed her arms. "You look incredible in that business suit."
Barbara's composure faltered; her cheeks reddened. "You look great too... anyway." She cleared her throat and switched back to business mode. "Now that several months have passed and the tower's complete—thanks to the 'generous donations' from Gotham's construction companies—what comes next?"
Pamela began pacing, her green heels clicking against the metal floor. "You're the CEO of Midnight Industries. I'm the CFO—the public face of our 'environmental research.' And secretly, I'm the leader of Midnight Mayhem—the real owner of Midnight Industries."
Barbara sighed. "Yes, I know."
She turned and tapped a panel on her desk. "I've started developing new nanite technology. They've evolved. I can now manipulate electronics through neural interface alone." She gestured to a shimmering projection that hovered midair—a 3D image frozen in perfect clarity. "Behold. The Quantum TV. It's not a recording—it's a static hologram embedded with nanite-based surveillance. Every unit connects directly to me."
Pamela leaned closer. "So everyone who buys one…"
Barbara's expression darkened with satisfaction. "We'll be spying on them. Governments, banks, corporations—they'll pay us to watch themselves. Chaos by subscription."
From the corner, Harley's voice cut in. "Y'know, that's the creepiest and hottest thing I've ever heard, Babs."
Pamela turned toward her. "Harley, what are you doing?"
Harley straightened up, her new outfit—red-and-black blazer with gold trim—gleaming under the lair lights. "Pamela... I've been with you girls for months. You know what time it is."
Barbara's head snapped up. "You're not thinking of leaving, are you?"
Harley looked down. "The Joker's due to escape from Arkham. Like clockwork. I have to go."
Pamela's voice sharpened. "You think we'll just let you walk away?"
Harley's eyes flickered. "He's the one who made me. I'm his girl."
Pamela stepped closer, her tone low and unwavering. "Can you honestly look me in the eyes and say you have no feelings for me?"
Harley froze. Her face turned pink. "O-Of course I do! We've been living together—sharing that swanky apartment with Barbara, sneaking in through that amazing tunnel system—of course I care about you!"
Pamela smirked slightly, her voice dropping to a near whisper. "Then don't worry. When Joker escapes, we'll handle it. Just enough to buy you more time with us."
Harley bit her lip. "I shouldn't… he invented me."
Pamela's eyes softened. "Is that a confession I hear?"
"As if," Harley muttered, trying to look away.
Barbara stepped between them, placing a steady hand on Harley's shoulder. "We'll help. If Joker escapes, Batman will chase him. But if it gets messy, we'll take care of it ourselves."
Harley's head shot up. "No killing! He's part of Gotham's chaos ecosystem. He keeps Batman busy—and that gives us breathing room."
Pamela laughed softly. "Batman distracted? Please. He's still chasing low-level robbers while we've built a corporate empire beneath his nose."
Barbara tapped another panel, revealing a chart of crew operations. "Our henchwomen are elite. No more dirty goons with bad tattoos. And they're paid on time."
Pamela pointed at the review board: UnderCarriage Labor Union – 5 Stars: Clean. Silent. Brutal.
She nodded approvingly. "Professionalism matters."
Pamela turned back to Barbara, her tone shifting again. "So your Quantum TVs are our entry point. Once they spread across Gotham, we'll have eyes everywhere. But we'll need more. Magic, technology, infiltration. Gotham has cults and mystics; we'll find them and harvest what they know."
Barbara's gaze flicked to a list of names. "Doctor Fate. Jason Blood. Zatanna. Even Madame Xanadu. Gotham's crawling with them. We'll find someone useful."
Harley, leaning on the desk, added, "Kira Strix could learn magic. She's disciplined enough."
Barbara nodded. "I'll incorporate mystical code into the nanites. Pamela, your midnight roses already cover the sewers. Once they merge with nanotech, they'll be unstoppable."
Pamela smiled faintly. "We've done brilliantly so far. And I'd say we're deep in the red on this operation."
Harley frowned. "Don't you mean in the black? That's profit."
Pamela chuckled softly. "No, darling. Red means blood. And blood means profit. We're villains. Red is good."
Harley raised her hand like a student. "That's why you're the boss."
Pamela's eyes glimmered with amusement. "Exactly. And soon, you'll be mine too, Harley."
Harley threw a pen across the room. "You're thinking too far ahead, Isley."
A vine shot up from the floor, snapping the pen midair and crushing it into dust. Pamela smiled faintly. "My plants are everywhere, Harley. You think you could ever throw something at me again?"
Harley exhaled, half-laughing. "Yeah, well, your midnight roses might be sneaky, but someone's gonna notice them eventually."
Pamela brushed a stray leaf from her sleeve. "Who says I only have midnight roses? I'm working on plant-animal hybrids. Even humanoid symbiotes. Kira Strix and the others will wear them like living armor."
Barbara adjusted her glasses. "I'll match that with nanotech combat suits. We'll hack every system in Gotham. They won't even know they've been conquered."
Pamela placed her hand gently on Barbara's arm. "Together, we'll own the city."
The sound of a phone vibrating broke the moment. Harley glanced down at her screen—and froze. "Ladies," she said quietly, "Joker just escaped from Arkham. It's happening."
Pamela's smile vanished. Barbara straightened.
Harley tucked the phone into her jacket and looked at them. "You said you wanted me to stay. Well, now help me deal with him. No killing. Just… control."
Barbara's lips curved slightly, her tone even. "Sounds like someone doesn't want to leave us. Especially Pamela."
Harley flushed, glaring. "As if."
