Thor wiped the blood from his lip, glancing at Jane's bewildered expression. He suppressed his own astonishment at the sudden appearance of the Scottish castle and gestured with his empty hand.
"An alternate dimension node," Thor explained, his voice rough but steady. "Think of it as a pocket of space folded behind the real world. It is created using powerful ancient magic—or advanced spatial technology, to you."
He pointed to the shimmering mirage of the castle. "The node in front of us seems like a small archway, but it is merely the anchor. Inside, the space is vast. That castle... it is a fortress of magic."
Jane nodded slowly, her scientist brain trying to reconcile architecture with astrophysics.
Above them, Severus Snape looked down at the Dark Elf ships with a sneer that could curdle milk.
"Mere Dark Elves," Snape drawled, his voice amplified by magic. "You are not worthy to know who we are. You are barely worthy to be scraping the mud off my boots."
He flicked his wand. It was a lazy, dismissive motion.
"Reducto."
A beam of blinding white light shot from the tip of his wand. It struck the lead Harrow ship with pinpoint accuracy.
BOOM!
The alien spacecraft didn't just crash; it disintegrated. The hull shattered into a thousand flaming pieces, raining debris down onto the Thames.
Malekith, standing on the deck of his Ark, felt his face turn ashen. He hadn't expected these human sorcerers to be so arrogant—or so destructive.
Reason, however, prevailed over rage. Malekith was a warlord, not a berserker. He sensed the ancient wards protecting that castle. To attack it directly would be a siege he didn't have time for.
The Convergence is short, he thought. Why fight the rock when I can drown the ocean?
"Hmph. Ignorant fools," Malekith spat, giving Snape a cold, hateful glare. "Hide in your castle. Once I have accomplished my Great Work, you will know what true power is! Darkness comes for you all!"
He raised his hands, manipulating the Aether. The swirling red liquid changed course. Instead of battering against the golden dome of Hogwarts, the torrent of reality-warping energy flowed around it like water around a stone.
It spread outwards, flooding into Greenwich, into London, into the world.
Wherever the red mist touched, reality broke. Buildings dissolved into black sand. The sky turned the color of dried blood.
"HAHAHA! TREMBLE, MORTALS!" Malekith laughed triumphantly, his voice echoing in the apocalypse. "DARKNESS WILL EVENTUALLY ENGULF EVERYTHING!"
The three professors on the ramparts frowned as they watched the destruction spread, but they made no move to leave the protection of the node.
"Malekith! Prepare to die!"
Thor roared, summoning his last reserves of strength. He charged at the Dark Elf leader, leaping over the dissolving terrain.
Malekith didn't even look at him. He simply waved a hand.
The Aether surged, forming a solid wall of crystallized reality. Thor slammed into it face-first.
"Overestimating yourself, Asgardian!"
Malekith scoffed. He flicked his wrist, and a whip of black and red fluid lashed out.
CRACK.
Thor was swatted out of the air like a fly. He crashed heavily into the pavement, creating a crater of shattered concrete. He groaned, struggling to rise, but his body screamed in protest. Every bone felt bruised. If he weren't a god, he would be a smear on the ground.
The Battlefield.
Phil Coulson watched the scene from behind a barrier, his mind racing.
He observed the three figures in the sky. Their robes. Their wands. The way they spoke with such archaic authority. It confirmed his suspicion: These are Hermione's people. Her teachers.
A surge of hope filled him. If Hermione is this strong, her professors must be gods among men! If we can get their help, we can push back the Aether!
But then, his heart sank.
The professors were staying put. They were watching the world burn around them, content to protect their little patch of sky.
"They're not engaging," Skye shouted over the wind. "Why aren't they fighting?!"
"Panic," Coulson muttered. "If this continues, Earth is gone."
He made a decision. Ignoring the risk to his cover, ignoring the alien gunfire, Coulson broke cover. He sprinted toward the spatial node, waving his arms.
"Hey! Up there! We need help!"
The Aether sensed him. It was alive, predatory. A tendril of red mist detached from the main flow and lashed out at the running agent, moving to erase him from existence.
"Coulson!" Skye screamed.
Coulson looked up. The red death was inches away. He felt the cold void of it.
Oh no. Am I going to die again?
WHOOSH.
At the critical moment, an invisible wave of force swept down. It was like a giant hand parting the sea. The Aether was forcibly shoved aside, creating a tunnel of clear air around Coulson.
He looked up. Professor McGonagall stood on the invisible platform, her wand raised, nodding slightly to him.
Saved.
Overjoyed, Coulson scrambled up the rubble to the base of the spatial node.
"Muggle?"
Before Coulson could even say 'thank you,' Professor McGonagall's stern voice cut him off. She frowned, looking down at him through her square spectacles.
"Why aren't you fighting the Dark Elves and protecting your world? What are you doing here, bothering us?"
Her tone was not hostile, but it was incredibly dismissive. It was the tone of a busy academic addressing a lost tourist.
Coulson felt a chill that had nothing to do with the weather. Why are these people so... difficult?
He suppressed his anxiety and forced his best diplomatic smile. "I am Hermione Granger's friend. This invasion... it's critical. We implore you wizards to lend a hand. S.H.I.E.L.D. will be eternally grateful!"
"Hermione's friend?" McGonagall's expression shifted from dismissal to suspicion.
Snape stepped forward, his black cloak billowing. "S.H.I.E.L.D.?" he sneered. "Granger mentioned it. Some kind of... Muggle organization that claims to protect the world? How quaint."
Flitwick giggled from his perch. "Protect the world? With those little metal toys? Unlikely."
"Let's verify," Snape said coldly. He pointed his wand directly at Coulson's eyes.
"Legilimens."
Coulson gasped.
It wasn't painful, but it was invasive. He felt a buzzing in his skull, like a swarm of bees. Memories flashed before his eyes—Hermione eating chips on the Bus, Hermione saving Simmons, Hermione mocking Fury.
Snape withdrew his mind as quickly as he had entered. He nodded, looking bored.
"The Muggle isn't lying," Snape confirmed. "He really is someone the brat knows."
Coulson clutched his head, panting. "Professors... please. I know S.H.I.E.L.D. seems insignificant to you. But the Aether is devouring reality! If we don't stop it, there won't be a Hogwarts left to protect!"
McGonagall's expression softened slightly, but her stance remained rigid.
"Mr. Coulson," she said, her voice grave. "It is not that we do not wish to act. But the Aether is a primordial force. Dealing with it requires precision and power that distracts from our primary duty."
She gestured to the castle behind her.
"We are Professors. Our duty is to the school and the students within. If we leave this node to fight your war, and the Aether breaches the castle, thousands of magical children die. That would be a dereliction of duty."
"Unless you can kill Malekith and stop the source," she stated firmly, "we will not intervene to control the spread. We are Shields, not Swords. We will not leave this spot."
Coulson stood there, stunned. He understood their logic, but it was cold comfort.
Kill Malekith? he thought desperately. If we could do that, we wouldn't be begging you for help!
The Triskelion.
Nick Fury watched the feed in silence. His one eye narrowed.
He finally understood. The Wizarding World wasn't just hidden; it was isolationist. They viewed Muggles—even S.H.I.E.L.D.—as a separate species. Hermione was an anomaly. She was the bridge.
If we survive this, Fury thought, we need to double our efforts to keep Granger happy. She's the only one who cares enough to help.
Greenwich.
The stalemate was palpable. The darkness was spreading. Malekith was winning.
Suddenly, all three professors stiffened.
McGonagall's head snapped around. Snape's eyes widened. Flitwick gasped.
They all looked back toward the shimmering image of Hogwarts Castle. They sensed something coming. Something massive.
"Minerva..." Snape whispered, his wand lowering slightly. "Do you feel that?"
