Chapter 2 - The Crew

Chapter 2

The rain had eased into a drizzle by the time Kira slowed down. Her lungs burned, her shoespeed smoking from the strain. She ducked into a narrow alley, walls covered in flickering graffiti-tags that glowed like ghosts. The injured girl slumped against the wall, clutching her sparking exo-limb module.

"Damn it," Kira muttered, crouching down. She had no reason to be here, no reason to help this stranger. And yet—here she was, hands steady as she disconnected the broken circuits on the girl's module.

The girl's eyes, sharp despite the pain, studied Kira.

"You… you're Kira, aren't you?"

Kira's jaw clenched. She didn't answer.

Before she could speak, a shadow fell across the alley. Someone had followed the trail. But it wasn't a drone. It was a tall figure in a hood, tablet in hand, AR projections spilling across the walls. A second later, another girl landed from a rooftop flip, rolling gracefully despite the slick ground. Then came a third—shorter, with a heavy backpack full of gear, humming faintly with hidden tech.

Kira's instincts screamed trap. She stood, fists raised.

The hooded one stepped forward first.

"Relax. If we wanted you dead, the drones would've done it. We're here because of her." She nodded at the injured girl on the ground. "And because of you."

Kira narrowed her eyes.

"And who the hell are you?"

The gymnast cracked a grin, brushing rain from her braided hair.

"Maya. That's Zinab with the bag. And I'm Tasha. We're building something bigger than just survival."

Zinab adjusted her pack, wires dangling like veins.

"Word is you were the fastest runner Yopougon ever saw. You disappeared. We need someone like you if we're gonna change the game."

Kira almost laughed. She had heard this pitch before—dreamers, rebels, crews who thought they could take on the system. They always ended in jail, or worse, dead.

But then Tasha leaned closer, eyes gleaming.

"We're entering the Shadows' Run."

The name hit Kira like a punch. The Course des Ombres. The underground race no one talked about, where corpos looked the other way because they bet on the blood, on the spectacle. The only race where a runner could rise—or vanish forever.

Kira's silence stretched. Rain pattered softly on steel.

The girl she'd saved shifted, whispering hoarsely:

"They… they'll kill me if I go back. Please… help them. Help us."

Kira looked at the three strangers, then at the broken city around her. For two years she had sworn never to run. Never to let her legs betray her again.

But deep inside, the city's pulse called her name.

She straightened, shoulders tense, heart thrumming.

"I don't run for anyone. Not anymore."

Maya smirked.

"Then run for yourself. Run for the truth."

For a moment, the alley fell quiet. Then somewhere in the distance, a siren wailed, and the night shifted again.

Kira didn't give them an answer. Not yet.

But the shadows of Yopougon had already chosen.
