Why didn't Gordon go down with Sean himself, or have someone send up a bowl of oatmeal?

He could entirely do so, but he didn't.

Gordon was well aware that if the porridge was brought to the room by him or sent by someone else right now, Sean might not eat it.

But if it was brought to him personally by the owner of the Lochindaal Hotel.

Given Sean's personality developed from a young age, he couldn't possibly refuse.

Gordon didn't ask Sean what happened, because when he entered, he immediately noticed the old newspaper in Sean's hand.

Gordon knew there must be news of Sean's mother's death within it; Sean had already mentioned this.

If Sean were able to find any concrete evidence about events from more than ten years ago, it would undoubtedly be in the old newspaper he's holding onto.

The reason for not being able to reunite with his sister must also be embedded in these newspapers.
