Chapter 85: The genius Scientist's Plea and the Shadow of the Hidden World
After all, although that organization was filled with enough moles and undercover agents to make one wonder if anyone actually worked there, the remaining members were far from amusing. They were a terrorist organization—a shadow that dared to fire upon Tokyo Tower with armed helicopters. In her current state, Renji Miyauchi was the only one who truly understood the gravity of the situation; the girls in the chat group were rightfully terrified.
They were ordinary people. Even with the extraordinary power of their Diaries, asking them to confront an international crime syndicate was a tall order. However, the girl who had joined the chat around midnight—Shiho Miyano—had shattered the silence. She revealed herself as a researcher for the organization and confessed that the "youth-reversing drug" mentioned by the Mysterious Person was her own creation. To silence any doubters, she uploaded chemical charts that were undecipherable to everyone except perhaps another genius.
A researcher of that caliber joining so suddenly and revealing her identity meant only one thing: she was desperate. Kaguya Shinomiya scanned the logs, her eyes narrowing as she found the plea.
"She received a commission to leave the organization. She can escape alone, but she isn't confident in saving her older sister, Akemi," Kaguya mused, her brow furrowing. "She wants our help."
This was a different beast entirely. Helping Rikka Takanashi's uncle avoid a plane crash or sending Shitamachi Kamubo to handle a haunting at the Gokou house were tasks Kaguya could handle with a phone call. This involved the Black Organization.
Worse, Shiho didn't even know Akemi's exact location, only that she was likely on a mission somewhere in Tokyo. The only clue was a single photograph. While the Shinomiya Family held immense power, their influence in military-grade security and covert extraction was limited.
"Still, I can't let this go," Kaguya thought. The allegiance of an 18-year-old genius scientist was worth any risk. "If we save her sister, she's willing to do anything."
Kaguya considered her options. She might need to leverage the main Siomiya house in Kyoto, or perhaps... win over that "Famous Detective" who had turned into a child? If she secured Shiho's loyalty, the detective would have to rely on the Shinomiya's goodwill to ever regain his original life.
"I need to make a trip to Mihana Town," Kaguya decided. She posted her support in the group, requesting more intel on the organization before preparing for her own day.
She had managed to "conquer" Sannowa Kasumi—the Kyoto Jujutsu High student—with high-class cuisine. Kasumi had agreed to take her to Tokyo Jujutsu High today. Kaguya called her maid, Ai Hayasaka, giving her strict instructions to investigate Akemi's whereabouts with absolute secrecy.
"Safety first, Ai," Kaguya warned. "If there's any risk of being discovered, pull back immediately."
Hayasaka's face went pale. Collect data on middle schoolers? Check. Keep a fake medium at home? Check. Now, a terrorist organization? "Mistress, are you trying to start a war?" she muttered, though she knew she couldn't refuse.
Kaguya ignored the comment and headed to the courtyard. She had removed all surveillance so Kasumi could practice in peace. The Kyoto girl was diligent; she had been practicing her sword draws for over an hour.
"I hope I didn't disturb you," Kaguya said as she approached.
"Not at all!" Kasumi chirped, wiping sweat from her brow. "I felt a slight breakthrough in my sword skills today."
Kaguya seized the opening. "Can you show me a technique of the New Shadow Style?"
Kasumi hesitated, but the memory of last night's exquisite dinner won out. She asked Kaguya to step back, released a flicker of Cursed Energy, and performed an Iaido Sword Draw. Kaguya felt the sheer pressure of the air from meters away. It was leagues beyond her current Ripple power.
"I'd like to learn this," Kaguya said directly.
Kasumi's expression turned pained. "Kaguya... if you want to learn the New Shadow Style, you have to form a Binding Vow. If you have other options, please, consider them carefully."
Kaguya was puzzled. "Is the restriction that severe?"
Kasumi didn't know how to explain. That morning, her Diary had revealed a horrifying secret: the head of the New Shadow Style used those Binding Vows to siphoned off the lifespan of disciples to extend his own life. The Mysterious Person had exposed the corruption of the Jujutsu higher-ups, even mentioning that Gojo Satoru's best friend had defected to kill all non-sorcerers.
Kasumi's worldview was collapsing. If the Diary hadn't reminded her she could use Reading Value to eventually sever her own Vow, she would have broken down. She couldn't let Kaguya fall into the same trap.
Kasumi used every excuse she could—restricting future growth, the complexity of Cursed Energy—to steer Kaguya away from the style. Kaguya noticed the hesitation and decided to wait until she had more information before committing.
"Oh, right," Kasumi said, changing the subject. "I called Principal Gakuganji last night about your interest."
Kasumi had nearly cried to her principal about accidentally promoting Tokyo High. To her surprise, Gakuganji didn't seem to care. He offered a "plan": if Kaguya chose Kyoto, she was admitted instantly. If she went to Tokyo and they rejected her, she'd have to pass a grueling "entrance exam" to ever get back into Kyoto.
Kaguya understood the petty power move. "Let's go to Tokyo first. I have a special friend who wants to join us."
"Another person?" Kasumi blinked.
Kaguya had arranged for Yotsuya Miko to be brought over. Miko had been too terrified to travel at night—the "Kage" spirits were too numerous—so she arrived that morning with her luggage.
Over a lavish breakfast, Kasumi scrutinized Miko. The girl's vitality was average, and Kasumi couldn't feel a single drop of Cursed Energy from her. Miko didn't even react to Kasumi's probing energy.
Is she a fake? Kasumi wondered. Did Kaguya get scammed?
She didn't realize that Miko's Yin-Yang Eyes were so high-level they were effectively passive, requiring no energy to see the horrors around them. Kasumi decided to watch the girl closely as they made their way to Tokyo Jujutsu High.
