Adrian stood behind the counter, polishing mugs with a clean cloth while keeping his phone wedged between his shoulder and his ear. His voice was low and cautious.
"Why'd you call this early? I'm at work."
The voice on the other end hurriedly spoke. "We found Boss Jack."
Adrian froze. His hand stilled on the ceramic mug. Jack was alive. Where had he been all this time? Why didn't he come home?
"Where is he?" he asked quietly, placing the mug on the tray. Is he okay? Is he injured?"
"One of the smaller islands off the coast. A college marine biologist found him— he was collecting samples when he spotted Boss Jack floating on a plank. He fished him out and took him to a hospital on the mainland, but because we were only asking fishermen and people who lived by the coast, we didn't get the news. Apparently, the guy is a local who grew up on the island and usually goes out to sea himself. So nobody else saw what happened."
"How did you get to know this?"
