I didn't even have time to turn back when he lunged forward and scooped me into his massive arms as though I weighed nothing, holding me like a toy in the grip of a monster.
It felt unreal, like being dragged into a cruel, waking nightmare, my chest throbbing with pain, my heart racing as the ground disappeared beneath me. Roars echoed in the distance, warriors clashed in shadows I barely saw. The scent of blood, thick and metallic, clung to the wolf's body and burned my senses until everything inside me trembled.
My eyes snapped shut without warning, yet the hot arms carrying me never stopped until I felt my body laid on something moist.
I struggled to snap my eyes open, but I couldn't, despite all my attempts. It was as though a certain brightness shimmered before me, and in the midst of it all, I saw Mum, waving like she did in my nightmares the previous day. But I wasn't sure.
