Engineer raised the Omni-Tool as the display flickered again. Orange-gold light projected across her face, illuminating the hardening expression in her eyes.
The scattered signatures had begun moving in the same direction. They were advancing directly toward the UNIT team.
She shifted her stance and angled the device toward the tunnel. The markers on the holographic map slid across one another, converging with alarming speed.
"That's new." The omni-tool expanded the map across her vision.
[Multiple Cybernetic Signatures Converging.]
[Estimated Units: Six.]
[Configuration: Active Cybermen.]
Engineer's expression flattened with immediate concern.
"Crap, Active Cybermen coming towards us and fast." While she was saying that, she went and checked on her stats
{Engineer Status Profile: Active.}
[Strength: 162 ]
[Vitality: 164 ]
[Dexterity: 64]
[Intelligence: 163]
[Wisdom: 40]
[Charisma: 50]
[Luck: 150]
[Total free Attributes: 680]
Engineer made a surprised face at all the free points she saved up, which she shouldn't be; she never really needed to use them because her stats were too high for even the most trained human/sub-human
The commander immediately turned toward her, one hand already moving toward his weapon. "What?"
"Remember when I said this might become a serious problem?" Please say you remember. I would hate to explain the entire disaster while the disaster is walking toward us
"Yes."
"It has become a serious problem for everyone here."
A metallic footstep echoed through the tunnel. The sound struck the walls and returned in layers, making the approaching machines seem closer than they actually were.
A second footstep followed, heavier and more deliberate than the first.
The UNIT soldiers raised their weapons and formed a defensive line across the passage. The technicians moved behind them while the commander stepped forward and gestured for everyone to hold position.
Engineer looked at the narrow tunnel, then at the six markers advancing through the darkness. 'Six Cybermen. Narrow tunnel. Limited cover. UNIT behind me. This is either a tactical situation or the universe personally mocking my decision-making,' engineer thought to herself, trying to find good cover
"Are they all coming this way?"
[Affirmative.]
"Why?"
[Your intrusion may have triggered a defensive response.]
The Engineer looked down at the Omni-Tool with open disbelief.
"You could have mentioned that before I hacked their network."
I would have appreciated knowing that the network came with an angry security team.
[You did not ask.]
"I shouldn't have to ask whether the murder robots noticed me." That feels like information the System should volunteer, she thought.
The first Cyberman appeared at the far end of the tunnel.
It moved with slow, deliberate certainty, its silver armor catching the weak emergency lights. Steam curled around its boots as it advanced. Another Cyberman stepped into view behind it, followed by a third. Their blank faces reflected the blue glow of their weapons.
Engineer leaned slightly around the concrete support beside her, then immediately pulled back as the lead Cyberman's head turned in her direction.
Yes. Definitely noticed. The commander raised his weapon.
"Hold." The Cybermen continued forward without hesitation. Their voices rolled through the tunnel. "YOU WILL BE UPGRADED," all of them said altogether
Engineer sighed and slid behind the nearest concrete support, keeping one eye on the machines. "See, this is why I prefer Daleks. At least they kill you fast, and only something does Daleks do body horror."
Also, Daleks are louder. You always know exactly how offended they are/murder happy. The commander glanced at her without lowering his weapon. "Can your device stop them?"
Engineer just shrugs. "Probably." Probably means I have not tested it against basically living organic computer intelligences. 'Wow, that sounds like some Warhammer shit right there.' Engineer thought before she shifted her grip and began cycling through the Omni-Tool's combat functions.
She looked at her options; she could try temporal desynchronization worked on the network. It might work on the units. It might also make them angrier, but they already seem committed to that.
Lead Cyberman raised its weapon. Engineer's Omni-Tool flashed an urgent warning.
[Energy Discharge Imminent.]
Her eyes widened. "Crap, get down!" Move now. Think later.
The Cyberman fired. A bright blue beam tore through the tunnel and struck the wall where the commander had been standing. Concrete exploded outward, filling the air with dust and fragments.
Engineer threw herself sideways, hit the floor on one shoulder, and rolled behind a support pillar as debris clattered across her coat.
UNIT soldiers dropped behind cover and returned fire. Bullets sparked against Cyber armor, but the machines did not slow. They kept advancing through the smoke, their weapons glowing between bursts of gunfire.
Engineer pressed her back against the pillar and peered around it. Another blast scorched the floor beside her. Heat washed over her coat. The concrete vibrated beneath her shoulder.
"Okay," she muttered, "I definitely need to get some light body armor that can tank an energy shot. Also, I need to add a firearm feature to my omni-tool; I hate just hiding; I don't have patience for this," which she was right; Engineer was being impatient, wanting nothing more than to rip these cybermen apart
AN: She clearly never played Rainbow Six solo rank; that can make a man cry
The commander shouted over the gunfire, "Can you disable them?"
"I can try!" Engineer said with a growing frown I can absolutely try. Whether I can do it before they turn us into decorative ash is a separate question…well, them into ash I probably be fine.
"Try faster!" said commander obvious unit must be a stressful job
The Engineer raised her eyes and had that system examine the leading Cyberman. Layers of data unfolded across her vision while blue energy flashed through the tunnel. Hmm, going to change Omni-Tool interface color to purple later, better than blue
[Cybernetic Combat Unit Detected.]
[Identity: Cyberman Unit C-01.]
[Race: Cyber-converted humanoid; original biological species unknown.]
[Level: 18.]
[Health: 9,840 / 9,840.]
[Threat Potential: High.]
[Estimated Age: 47 years since conversion; biological age unavailable.]
[Armor: Reinforced Cyber-Alloy.]
[Network Link: Active.]
[Weakness Identified: Localized EMP Desynchronization.]
Engineer's mouth curved into a sharp smile showing off her fang teeth. "Oh, I can work with that imma about to spam EMP landmines on these suckers"
A UNIT soldier fired a grenade with great accuracy; he throw to the leading Cyberman. It then struck the lead Cyberman in the chest and bounced off and rolled to its boots, detonating with a concussive blast.
The blast struck the Cyberman hard enough to rip it off balance and send it slamming backward into the concrete wall. Dust burst from the impact as sparks scattered across the floor, and the machine collapsed heavily onto its side. For half a second, it stayed down.engineer leaned out farther, watching the smoke. .' yea that not enough to take them out,' the engineer thought to herself, grimacing from what she was seeing: that grenade barley effect their main systems.
And she was right cause in a second the Cyberman then rose from the ground like the undertaker, but its armor was scorched, and one shoulder plate hung loose, exposing machinery beneath.
UNIT soldiers returned fire, rifles cracking through the tunnel as the Cybermen continued advancing through it with that same irritating, steady pace.
The Engineer looked down at the Omni-Tool.
She didn't even think about it.
Her thumb struck the activation control.
"Cover me."
The technician's head whipped toward her. "Wait, what are you doing?"
She planted one hand on the barricade. "Something clever."
"That is not an answer."
"It usually is." Then she vaulted over.
"Engineer!" the commander shouted. Too late. Her boots hit the concrete and immediately carried her forward. The Cyberman's arm cannon swung toward her.
The Engineer's eyes focused on it, and like an old crowboy standoff, she merely moved back her arm to dodge the energy cannon
She pressed herself against the concrete and looked down at the Omni-Tool.
"System, wait, not that system. Ughh, I forgot to give you a name. I can't have two systems with the same title, Omni-Tool system. Your new name is Bellona "
The display responded instantly.
[New Designation Bellona- AWAITING COMMAND.]
"EMP package. Localized pulse, narrow radius. I don't want to fry every UNIT radio in the tunnel."
[CONFIGURING.]
The first holographic deployment marker appeared across the floor. Then another, then another. The Engineer's eyes lit up with a manic glow; no, it was literally glowing right now. She shifted her grip on the Omni-Tool, and the holographic interface folded inward until the scanning display was replaced by a compact targeting reticle.
[EMP DISCHARGE MODE AVAILABLE.]
[WARNING: RAPID DISCHARGE MAY CAUSE SYSTEM OVERHEATING.]
She stared at the warning. "And define rapid? Like hold down trigger rapid or 5 tap shots." Jesus, this thing is loaded with bugs and problems I got to fix later ughhhh more work!
[MORE THAN THREE CONSECUTIVE SHOTS.]
"WHAT ONLY THREE SHOTS?!" Engineer couldn't hold back her frustration; she used godamn dalek and Cybermen metals, and it can only hold 3 shots! No wonder these losers kept getting beaten by a homeless time lord in an old, defective Type 40 TARDIS
The damaged Cyberman turned toward her, its exposed shoulder mechanisms twitching as the arm cannon began charging again.
Engineer leaned out from behind the pillar and raised the Omni-Tool. The UNIT technician stared from behind the barricade.
"Is that thing a weapon now?"
"No." Engineer sighted along the display.
"It is a scientific instrument currently expressing itself violently." She fired without a second thought
A tight pulse of violet-white energy snapped from the Omni-Tool and struck the Cyberman directly in its damaged shoulder. The effect was immediate. machine jerked hard to one side, then its arm cannon flickered. targeting light inside its head blinked twice.
Then the Cyberman's entire upper body locked in place for half a second before its systems forcibly tried to restart. Engineer's grin widened.
The Cyberman recovered. Its head snapped toward her.
"Right, less talking." She fired again. The second EMP shot hit the center of its chest.
Electrical interference rippled across its armor, and the Cyberman's next step came down crooked. Its arm cannon started charging, stopped, then started again.
Engineer watched the readings pouring across her display.
[NETWORK SYNCHRONIZATION INTERRUPTED.]
[MOTOR RESPONSE DELAY: 0.8 SECONDS.]
The Bellona flashed another warning.
[THERMAL LIMIT APPROACHING.]
She ignored it and fired a third shot. She was already feeling her omni-tool starting to overheat; she was going to need an escape path. This one struck the Cyberman's knee.
Rifle fire hammered into the already weakened sections of its armor while another soldier shifted position and fired into the exposed shoulder joint.
The Cyberman tried to raise its weapon, but its arm was moved too slowly from repeated system restarts Engineer's eyes tracked the failure in real time.
"Keep hitting the damaged side!" she shouted. The commander didn't waste time asking questions.
"You heard her! Focus fire!" UNIT fire concentrated on the lead Cyberman.
Engineer ducked back behind the support pillar as return fire streaked through the tunnel. A bolt struck the edge of the concrete beside her and blasted dust across her sleeve.
She looked down at the new scorch mark. "Oh, brilliant."
The technician shouted from cover, "You alright?"
"Yes!" She looked at her coat. Ughhhh, I love this coat even thought it my only coat
Another Cyberman stepped through the smoke.
Then another.
The Engineer's expression flattened.
"Oh, that's excessive."
Her Omni-Tool beeped.
[THERMAL LIMIT EXCEEDED.]
The display dimmed. She stared at it, already feeling the stress and wishing she had kept working on it before she thought it was a good idea to fight something with
"Come on, there must be some way for you to shoot one more time."
[COOLDOWN REQUIRED.]
"No, no, no, absolutely not. We are in the middle of something that probably will kill us"
[COOLDOWN REQUIRED.]
Engineer lost it before she started to shake it in anger. "I'M GOING TO SCAP YOU STUPID PIECE OF CRAP"
