Chapter 44 - Chapter 40 : Chunin exam (Final)

Over the last three days, Shinichi and Kaya had encountered more beasts, insects, and four chunin proctors. Shinichi used his Sharingan to subdue each one with different genjutsu – partly for efficiency and partly to test his abilities. He hadn't had the chance to use dojutsus on other shinobi before, and this exam offered the perfect excuse.

It was overkill.

His genjutsu was stronger than he realized.

Kaya was delighted by their success, but increasingly bored. There were no real fights to challenge her, no opponents to "exercise" against.

Still, their medal count was staggering: 6 red, 5 black, 12 purple, 23 blue, 6 green.

Today was the final day.

Before the whistle blew, Kaya quietly split the medals. She had come to understand that Shinichi's strength was far beyond her own. Though she never said it aloud, her intuition told her he was holding back. So she gave him the extra Black medal, keeping only a single blue for herself.

The whistle echoed through the forest.

Jonin observers appeared collecting medals from each genin. Then they guided the teams back to the original gathering site.

---

The scores were tallied.

Uchiha Shinichi: 3 red, 3 black, 6 purple, 11 blue, 3 green – 94 points (1st place)

Hatake Sakumo: 3 red, 1 black, 8 purple, 14 blue, 4 green – 93 points (2nd place)

Senju Kaya: 89 points (3rd place)

Aburame Shinji: 86 points (4th place)

Sakumo and Shinichi had both been placed in two-man cell teams – a disadvantage in numbers, but an advantage in medal sharing.

Of course, only competent teams could exploit it.

The top 10 included:

2 from Team 13 (Shinichi's team)

2 from Team 12 (Sakumo's team)

3 from Team 1

2 from Team 5

1 from Team 9

Shimura Nesuke stepped forward.

"Congratulations to the top 10! From now on, you are all Chunin of Konoha!"

"""Hah???!!!""

'As expected,' Shinichi thought.

"Sir, I thought there was another stage?"

Shimura smirked.

"I never said there was another stage. I said we would determine the top 10 genin at the end of this stage."

"!!!"

Then he continued.

"Also – Nara Raoto, Hyuga Daisuke, Sarutobi Kenzo, Uchiha Keiko, Uchiha Aiko, Senju Kentaro, Hyuga Oasmu, and Aburame Nobu."

"""HA!!"""

"Congratulations. From today onward, you are also Chunin of Konoha."

"""??!!!"""

Shimura's voice grew firm.

"Throughout the exam, jonin observers have monitored your teams. Your leadership, your reactions to the unknown, your endurance, your willingness to protect your comrades – all of it has been assessed."

"For example, Nara Raoto. Though you lost your red medal and were disqualified by score, you devised a strategy to steal enemy medals, passed them to your teammates, and held back opponents with your shadow jutsu so your team could escape. Your tactical mind and self-sacrifice were noted."

"Each of you was evaluated by qualified jonin. You've proven yourselves. Hold your heads high – you are now Chunin of Konoha."

The newly promoted chunin erupted in cheers.

Many had expected to fail.

Instead, they had been recognized.

Those who didn't pass were disappointed, but not defeated. They had seen their strengths and weakness laid bare. And they left with new resolve.

Shimura nodded in satisfaction and raised his hand.

"The Chunin Exam is officially concluded. You are all dismissed!"

As Shinichi exited the venue, he caught sight of Senju Kaya in the distance, animatedly boasting in front of a kunoichi from his clan.

'That must be Uchiha Keiko – the one she mentioned.'

He watched silently as the two girls slipped into a verbal skirmish, their voices rising. A classic Senju-Uchiha clash, wrapped in adolescent pride.

Before he could decide whether to intervene or walk away, a familiar voice called out.

"Shinichi, I knew you'd succeed."

He turned to see Hatake Sakumo, silver-haired and calm, wearing the forehead protector and tanto hoisted on his back.

"You too, Sakumo. With our skills it was inevitable."

Sakumo smiled.

"I was surprised there were only two stages. I thought they'd make us duel each other or something."

Shinichi nodded.

"They might've, if there was enough time and funding. But with all the reforms Hokage is pushing through… he probably decided the second stage was sufficient."

Konoha under Senju Tobirama was no longer the village it had been.

The academy had been reconstructed. Ninja ranks and mission classifications redefined. Training grounds expanded. The village itself was growing both physically, politically, and ideologically.

One reform after another, Tobirama was shaping Konoha into something more than a coalition of clans. It was becoming a unified system – a vast, disciplined ninja village with laws, hierarchy, and purpose.

Clans retained autonomy, but all shinobi were now bound by Konoha's Shinobi Rules.

The latest reform was already stirring conversation: the three-genin, one-jonin team system. From now on, academy graduates would be assigned to official teams led by jonin instructors. Clan mentorship would continue, but missions would be carried out with assigned teammates, not clanmates.

It was a bold move to bridge the divide between clans and civilians.

At first, the clans resisted.

But Tobirama's vision was clear.

And they acquiesced.

Shinichi and Sakumo walked side by side through the training grounds, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows behind them.

They didn't speak much.

They didn't need to.

They had passed the exam.

But more importantly, they had stepped into a new chapter. Not just as chunin, but as shinobi of a village that was changing beneath their feet.

At the gates, they nodded to each other.

"See you soon," Sakumo said.

Shinichi nodded.

"Count on it."

And with that, they parted – each returning to their clan, their family and the quiet realization that the future was already unfolding.
