Elena's Apartment, 8:35 AM...
Elena was having one of those days when everything seemed to conspire against her. After a heated argument with Donna that ended with her practically throwing the woman out of her house, she had barely taken a breath before her phone buzzed.
It was a message from her boss, curtly reminding her to be in the office before 9:00 AM – an hour earlier than the 10:00 AM permission she had secured the previous night.
Now torn between rushing to comfort Ruby and showing up at work early to avoid a possible query, Elena made her choice. Ruby came first especially now when it seemed the world was against her.
She hurried out of her apartment building towards the main street and flagged down a passing taxi.
Slipping into the back seat, she exhaled sharply as she handed the driver the address.
"Please, drive as fast as you can," she said urgently. "My friend needs me."
