Chapter 88 - The Ambush

In the bathroom of a Paris hotel, Tony stood before the mirror, holding a blood toxicity monitor in his hand.

"Blood toxicity: fifty-three percent."

Seeing the number on the screen, Tony let out a weary sigh and wiped the blood from his fingertip with a wet tissue.

Bracing both hands on the sink, he stared at his reflection. The buttons of his shirt were undone, revealing the arc reactor embedded in his chest, glowing faintly blue.

Gazing at the black veins spreading outward from the reactor, Tony muttered to himself, "Could things possibly get any worse?"

Then he left the hotel, changed into a racing suit, and headed for the drivers' entrance.

Climbing over the fence, he stepped onto the track and told the surrounding reporters and cameras, "Owning a race car means racing. Otherwise, what's the point of having one?"

Watching Tony's excited expression on TV, Pepper—still in the hotel room—went pale with shock and immediately called for Natalie to explain.

"I'm sorry, I just found out too," Natasha (posing as Natalie) replied, equally surprised by Tony's impulsiveness.

But the more Tony acted like this, the more certain S.H.I.E.L.D. became of their suspicions.

Pepper sighed helplessly and told Natalie to quickly find Happy. Natalie nodded and hurried out.

Once again, Tony Stark became the center of a media frenzy.

Meanwhile in New York, Meng Ran and Peter were still busy in the lab. After several days of work, they had finally made significant progress in solving the problem of palladium poisoning.

They expected results within a day.

To reach this point, the two of them had spent nearly all their time experimenting—scribbling formulas during class, then heading straight to the lab at the base after school.

Just as they were still working, Xiao Bai's voice came over the intercom: "Predicted event triggered—Tony Stark, car race."

Meng Ran and Peter both looked up. A live broadcast appeared, projected onto the lab wall.

On screen, Tony was already wearing his helmet and sitting in the race car. At the signal, the cars—brightly colored flashes of red, blue, and yellow—shot down the track like lightning.

Tony's blue car started quickly, weaving skillfully between competitors.

"Wow! Tony Stark's racing skills aren't bad at all," Peter said in awe as the blue car overtook another.

Meng Ran smiled. "Not bad indeed. But it makes sense—he's Tony Stark. Who knows how many luxury cars he's driven since childhood."

Peter nodded, still watching intently. The extravagant lifestyle of a billionaire was far beyond ordinary reach—yet who wouldn't want to try it, if given the chance?

Just as the race reached its most intense moment, a tall man in an orange maintenance uniform suddenly stepped out from the stands and began walking onto the track.

The nearby staff shouted in alarm, but the man ignored them completely. His cold eyes were fixed on the speeding cars as he kept walking forward.

As he moved, two glowing electric whips flickered to life in his hands, crackling with blue arcs.

At the same time, the orange uniform burned away under the heat, turning to ash and falling from his body.

Now bare-chested, the man strode forward, whips humming with energy.

Whoosh!

With a sharp snap, one of the oncoming red cars was sliced clean in half, flipping violently before crashing beside the track.

The audience screamed in terror—no one had expected such horror at a race.

At that moment, Tony's blue car came speeding toward the man.

A faint smile tugged at the man's lips. He raised a whip and lashed out.

In an instant, Tony's blue car split in two and tumbled off the track.

Inside the overturned car, Tony wasn't injured, but he was stuck in the seat.

In the lab, Meng Ran and Peter watched the scene with growing unease.

"Wait—is that an arc reactor on his chest?" Peter asked in disbelief.

Just days ago, Tony had confidently declared before the Senate Armed Services Committee that no one could replicate his technology—yet now, he was being proven wrong.

Meng Ran's expression turned serious. "This is bad. Our stock's going to tank."

"Uh—seriously? That's your concern right now?" Peter said speechlessly. He had meant Tony was in danger, not their investments.

But then Meng Ran blinked. "Wait… actually, that is important! Damn it, my tuition money better not go down with it!"

Peter suddenly remembered his own tuition was part of that investment and grew nervous too.

Just then, Xiao Bai's calm voice came through the speaker: "Don't worry, boss. I sold all our Stark stock immediately—at the peak price. We took no losses."

Both Meng Ran and Peter exhaled in relief.

"Whew… thank goodness," Peter said. "At least we didn't lose anything."

Meng Ran grinned. "Sold at the peak, huh? That's several times what we paid. Not only no losses—we just made a fortune."

Then he added, "Oh, and Xiao Bai—buy it all back once the price drops. It'll rise again soon."

"Understood," Xiao Bai replied. "Should I withdraw Mr. Parker's profit or reinvest it?"

Peter thought for a moment. "No need to withdraw. Keep it the same as before."

"Affirmative," Xiao Bai said.

With the financial crisis averted, they turned their attention back to the live broadcast.

On-screen, Pepper had just thrown Tony his briefcase, and Tony was in the middle of a dazzling transformation.

With a series of mechanical clicks, the Iron Man armor assembled around him in seconds.

Tony shoved the car carrying Happy and Pepper out of harm's way, then raised both hands, charging up his repulsors toward the attacker.

But before he could fire, the man's whip lashed out again, knocking Tony off balance.

Tony tried to retaliate, but the barrage of lightning-fast strikes left his armor sparking and dented.

In the lab, Meng Ran and Peter both pressed a hand to their foreheads.

Tony's combat ability was… pathetic.

It was unbelievable—a fully armored Iron Man being forced backward by a half-naked man wielding two electric whips.

Sure, the briefcase armor was lighter and less durable—but still, this was embarrassing.

The real issue was Tony himself. He relied entirely on his armor's firepower and had almost no actual combat skills. Once he couldn't blast his way through, he was lost.

After several more lashes, Tony looked dazed. He couldn't feel pain through the suit, but being battered like that in front of so many people was humiliating.

Crack!

Another whip wrapped around his neck. Instead of pulling away, Tony gritted his teeth and used it to close the distance between them.

The man tried to strike again, but this time Tony caught the whip and trapped it under his arm. Step by step, he drew closer.

At last, with nowhere left to retreat, the whip-wielding man took several heavy punches from Tony and went down hard.

Seeing the danger over, nearby police rushed in and dragged the man toward a patrol car.

Coughing blood, the man looked at Tony, who was holding the replica arc reactor, and laughed hoarsely, "Hahaha… You lose, Stark! Hahaha!"

Tony stared at the imitation in his hand, then clenched his fist and crushed it to pieces.

In the lab, Meng Ran and Peter exchanged a look before turning back to their work.

No words were needed—anyone with a bit of sense could see it.

Tony Stark was about to be in serious trouble.

What awaited him now was a storm of doubt and criticism from every direction.
