Someone nudged me hard in the shoulder. I cracked one eye open. I was still on the floor mattress Penelope had thrown down in the living room the night before… or, this morning? Tessa should have been beside me, but the space was empty. Instead Penelope was leaning over me, holding my phone out like it was on fire.
"Get up, you fat fuck. Someone named CB is calling you."

I groaned, rolled onto my side, and pushed myself up. My whole body felt heavy. In the kitchen Tessa was already at the stove, spatula in hand. The smell of eggs filled the apartment. Uh-oh. Tessa cooking breakfast was never a good sign.
I took the phone. 8:34 a.m.
"Thanks," I muttered.
Penelope just shrugged and wandered toward the kitchen. I answered the call, still half-asleep.
"Carrie."
"Evan. Morning. Jack will be connecting through my laptop in about ten minutes. I'll call you back the second he's on."
"Okay. Thanks."
"Talk soon."
