Silver noticed it the second she walked into Ingalls for Thursday's practice. The energy was off, like someone had turned the volume down on everything. Passes that usually connected sailed wide. Players who normally communicated with just a glance now collided in confusion. Even the warm-up laps looked sluggish.
She found her usual spot in the stands, pulling her jacket tighter against the rink's perpetual chill. Down on the ice, Coach Reeves blew his whistle for what had to be the tenth time in five minutes.
"Jackson! You're supposed to be covering the weak side, not admiring the rafters!"
