"Silence stretched across the couch."
After Americus left with promises to check in tomorrow, Silver sat alone in her room, two empty ice cream pints on her desk and a strange restlessness in her chest. She'd changed into softer clothes, old Yale Swimming sweatpants and a hoodie she'd stolen from Eli months ago after a particularly cold morning practice. It still smelled faintly like him, though she'd never admit that was why she kept it.
The knock came again, softer this time. Like he was giving her an out if she wanted to pretend she hadn't heard.
She opened the door to find Eli still there, looking like he'd been pacing the hallway. His Yale Hockey hoodie was rumpled, his good hand shoved in the pocket while the sling held his left arm immobile.
"Americus gone?"
"Yeah. She had to file her story." Silver stepped back, a silent invitation. "You came back."
