Chapter 42 - Chapter 41: Cosplay

The weekend sunlight streamed through the sewing club's window, casting dappled light and shadows on the floor.

When Okabara Kyogumichi walked into the activity room, carrying a large roll of lace fabric, Kitagawa Marin was already standing impatiently by the mannequin, waving the freshly printed character design sheets in her hand, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Okabara-san! You're finally here!" Kitagawa Marin skipped over, still wearing the unfinished cosplay costume from yesterday, its skirt hem covered in countless pins. "Look at this detail, I always feel like the puffiness of the skirt isn't true to the original!"

Kyogumichi put down the fabric and carefully compared the design sheet with the half-finished product: "There's indeed a bit of an issue. We need to add three layers of tulle to the lining and adjust the angle of the pleats at the waist."

He took out a tape measure and wrapped it around Kitagawa's waist. "The waist would be a centimeter tighter to better fit the character's image, though it might be a bit snug."

"It's fine, it's fine! What's a little discomfort for accuracy!" Kitagawa Marin waved her hand dismissively, then suddenly remembered something. She turned around and began unzipping the back of her costume. "Oh, Okabara-san, when I tried it on yesterday, I noticed a problem with the back strap design. Can you help me figure out how to modify it?"

As the zipper slowly descended, the black lace backless dress gradually slipped down, revealing her fair back.

Kyogumichi instinctively turned his head, but his eyes couldn't help but glance in that direction: "Couldn't you at least change in the fitting room first..."

"Oh, it's fine, we're all friends." Kitagawa Marin nonchalantly took off her outer garment, revealing a simple camisole underneath. "Besides, isn't this how we alter clothes in the sewing club? Last time, I even tried on a bikini-style cosplay costume right here in the clubroom."

Kyogumichi rubbed his forehead helplessly. This was the most troublesome yet adorable thing about Kitagawa Marin—she was always so unguarded when it came to things she loved, completely oblivious to shyness.

He picked up the tailor's chalk and made marks on the fabric, trying to divert his attention: "The strap issue can be changed to a crisscross design; it's both aesthetically pleasing and allows for tension adjustment."

"Wow! Okabara-san is so amazing!" Kitagawa Marin leaned in to watch him draw, the scent of her perfume mixed with the fresh smell of fabric wafting towards him. "Let's change it just like you said! Oh, and the ruffles on these cuffs, I always feel like they're not fluffy enough."

The two focused intently on discussing the costume details. Kyogumichi's fingers moved deftly over the fabric, and the scissors and needle and thread seemed to come alive in his hands. Kitagawa Marin, on the other hand, helped by handing him tools and clipping loose threads, occasionally offering her own ideas. They worked together seamlessly.

"Do you want to try on the whole effect?" Kyogumichi placed the altered skirt on the mannequin.

"Of course!" Kitagawa Marin immediately nodded, then turned to start taking off her clothes. "Wait for me, I'll try it on right now!"

Kyogumichi again turned away helplessly, hearing the rustle of clothes and occasional exclamations from behind him: "Oh no, this zipper seems stuck... Okabara-san, can you help me pull it up?"

When he turned around, he saw Kitagawa Marin facing away from him, the zipper stuck at her shoulder blades.

Kyogumichi carefully helped her pull up the zipper, his finger accidentally brushing her back. Both of them paused.

"Th-thank you." A rare blush spread across Kitagawa Marin's cheeks. She turned to display the costume. "How is it, how is it? Isn't the accuracy super high?"

The black lace long dress accentuated the girl's slender figure. The voluminous skirt swayed gently with her movements, and the ruffled cuffs and crisscross straps were just right, perfectly recreating the original character's image.

Kyogumichi couldn't help but nod: "It's perfect, especially the pleats at the waist; they really highlight your figure."

"Right, right!" Kitagawa Marin excitedly twirled in front of the mirror, then suddenly remembered something and ran to the cabinet to rummage through it. "Oh, Okabara-san, I also prepared another character's costume. Can you check if there are any issues with the cut of this swimsuit design!"

When she came out holding a bright blue bikini, Kyogumichi felt his composure being tested. The design of this swimsuit was incredibly daring, with very little fabric and cute bow decorations on the chest.

"This... isn't it too revealing?" Kyogumichi said with some hesitation.

"But that's how it is in the original work!" Kitagawa Marin said matter-of-factly, and actually started taking off her skirt on the spot. "I'll try it on for you to see the effect. Can you tell me if the elastic band at the waist needs adjusting?"

Kyogumichi was so startled that he quickly turned to face the wall: "At least wait until I leave before you try it on!"

"Oh, it's fine, just hurry and help me look!" Kitagawa Marin's voice had a hint of a playful whine.

Just at this chaotic moment, the activity room door suddenly opened, and Saki Kawasaki walked in, carrying fabric. She froze when she saw the scene before her.

Kitagawa Marin stood in the center of the room wearing a bikini, while Kyogumichi was pressed against the wall with his back to them. The situation was extremely awkward for a moment.

"Am I... am I coming at the wrong time?" Kawasaki Saki's cheeks instantly flushed crimson, and she turned to close the door.

"It's not what you think!" Kyogumichi and Kitagawa Marin shouted in unison.

After finally explaining the situation, Kawasaki Saki, her face still red, put down her fabric and hurried away, giving Kyogumichi a meaningful look before she left.

Kyogumichi helplessly watched Kitagawa Marin, who was still excitedly trying on clothes, feeling like he couldn't clear his name.

"Alright, alright, I won't tease you anymore." Kitagawa Marin finally put on her outer garment and took another costume from her bag. "Next is this character, Shizuku's maid outfit! I always feel like it's missing something."

When she came out in the maid outfit, Kyogumichi's eyes lit up. The black maid dress paired with a white apron, and a cat ear headband on her head, perfectly recreated the classic image from the anime.

Kitagawa Marin walked up to him, suddenly clasped her hands in front of her stomach, bowed slightly, and called out in a sweet voice: "Master, how may I be of service?"

Kyogumichi's heart skipped a beat. Looking at the lively-eyed, brightly smiling girl in front of him, he suddenly understood what she was missing—the soul of the character.

He picked up a needle and thread and sewed a small bell onto the apron: "Now it's perfect; it'll jingle when you walk."

"Wow! Okabara-san understands so well!" Kitagawa Marin excitedly twirled around, the bell making a crisp sound. "Just like this—Master, would you like to eat first, or bathe first, or would you like me first?"

Watching her in character, Kyogumichi couldn't help but blush: "It's perfect, you've completely captured the essence of this character."

After a full day of work, Kitagawa Marin's various cosplay costumes were finally all completed. The setting sun shone through the window, bathing the costumes in a warm golden glow.

Kitagawa Marin wore the finally completed black lace dress, unwilling to take it off in front of the mirror, her face beaming with a happy smile.

"Thank you so much, Okabara-san!" She turned and bowed deeply. "Without your help, I definitely couldn't have finished such perfect cosplay costumes!"

"I'm glad I could help." Kyogumichi tidied up the scattered fabric and tools. "When does the comic convention start?"

"Next Saturday!" Kitagawa Marin immediately replied, her eyes sparkling as she looked at him. "Okabara-san, would you like to come with me? I can be your guide and show you around the entire convention!"

Kyogumichi looked at her expectant eyes, remembered the bond progress on his panel, and smiled, nodding: "Alright, but you'll have to showcase these costumes in your best form then."

"Leave it to me!" Kitagawa Marin nodded vigorously and excitedly hugged Kyogumichi's arm. "I'll definitely be the most dazzling presence at the comic convention!"

The setting sun cast long shadows of the two of them. The faint scent of fabric and perfume still lingered in the sewing club. Kyogumichi looked at Kitagawa Marin's brilliant smile, his heart filled with anticipation.

When they finished tidying up and left school, Kitagawa Marin was still excitedly discussing her plans for the comic convention, occasionally striking poses for different characters.

Kyogumichi listened quietly, occasionally offering his suggestions. The evening breeze blew gently, carrying their laughter into the distance.
