Chapter 47 - Chapter 46: Sports Day (V)

The morning mist lingered over the university campus, but a charged atmosphere already crackled through the training grounds.

The Live Action Strategy Battle arena was split into three zones: the lecture hall, the sports field, and a small wooded area, each brimming with potential ambush points tucked into every shadow.

Okabara Kyogumichi, clad in a dark blue tactical vest and gripping a laser rifle, tested his equipment's responsiveness. As an assault player, his task was to breach enemy defenses alongside his teammates and seize the flag on the third floor of the library.

"All units, listen up! The match begins in five minutes," the squad leader's voice crackled through the headset. "Okabara-san, you're leading the left flank assault. Natsume-san and Yukinoshita-san will hold the center. The girls' team will flank from the right-side lecture hall. Keep comms open."

Kyogumichi took a steadying breath, heightening his senses with his finely honed perception skills. Every sound—the rustle of leaves, distant footsteps in the woods, the faint creak of a window, even his teammates' nervous breaths—became vivid and distinct. He adjusted his tactical goggles, the lenses displaying his teammates' positions and ammo counts. "Headset check, all clear!"

"Match start!" The referee's whistle pierced the air, and Kyogumichi darted forward like a released arrow.

Using his climbing skills, he vaulted over a two-meter fence with ease, landing silently in the shaded area behind the lecture hall. He rolled to cushion the impact, a technique drilled into him during physical training to minimize noise.

Natsume Takashi's calm voice came through the headset: "Two enemies on the left flank, heading toward the woods." Perched atop the clock tower as a scout, Natsume-san's sharp eyes tracked the opposition. "They're carrying sniper rifles. Stay low and use cover."

Kyogumichi slunk through the bushes, peering through gaps in the foliage. The two enemies moved cautiously, their steps heavy and uncoordinated—clear signs of inexperience. Drawing on his swordsmanship training, he calculated their paths, then burst from cover, firing precise single shots.

"Hit! Two red team members eliminated!" the referee announced over the public channel.

Kyogumichi didn't linger, swiftly moving to new cover. The entire maneuver was seamless, over in seconds.

"Nice work, Okabara-san," Yukinoshita Yukino's cool voice carried a rare note of approval. "The main enemy force is pushing toward the library from the center. I've set a smoke grenade trap, but I need backup."

Kyogumichi rerouted, scaling the lecture hall's drainpipe with practiced ease. His fingers gripped the brick seams perfectly, a testament to his refined climbing skills, keeping him steady on the vertical surface. Reaching the third-floor window, he caught the sound of footsteps behind him. In a flash, he flipped into a classroom, his movements swift and precise, reminiscent of the "Soru" technique from his training.

An enemy in a red helmet entered, rifle raised, scanning cautiously. Kyogumichi held his breath, using his perception to track the enemy's breathing. The moment the enemy turned, he struck, his laser beam hitting the sensor on their back.

"One red team member eliminated!"

Clearing the flank, Kyogumichi contacted the girls' team: "Right flank, report."

"We found the enemy's medical station on the second floor of the lecture hall!" Kitagawa Marin's voice bubbled with excitement. "But two guards are at the entrance, so we're holding back."

"Stay hidden. I'm on my way." Kyogumichi glided along the corridor, his steps nearly silent. Passing the stairwell, he caught a sound from above and pressed himself against the wall, adopting a defensive stance inspired by the "Kami-e" technique to minimize his profile.

An enemy peered down, found nothing, and turned away. Kyogumichi seized the moment, sprinting up the stairs and firing before the enemy could react.

"Hit!" the headset confirmed as he reached the second-floor corridor.

"East corridor, preparing to assault the medical station," Kyogumichi whispered. "Kitagawa-san, make noise on the right. Shiina-san, ready a flashbang."

The plan unfolded flawlessly. Kitagawa Marin created a distraction at the corridor's end, drawing the guards' attention. Shiina Mahiru lobbed a flashbang with pinpoint accuracy, and as the light flared, Kyogumichi charged from the opposite side, eliminating both guards.

"Medical station captured!" Kyogumichi flashed a victory sign to the camera. "Two teammates can revive."

Yukinoshita-san's urgent voice cut through: "Center's compromised! The enemy used a sonic jammer, cutting our comms! Natsume-san's out!"

Kyogumichi's pulse quickened, but he adjusted swiftly. "Everyone, converge on the library! Target the flag!" He dashed across the sports field, weaving between flowerbeds and sculptures to evade snipers, his unpredictable path a practical use of "Kami-e."

Nearing the library, a prickle of danger hit—his perception warning him. He rolled right, dodging a laser beam that grazed the ground where he'd stood. A heavy sniper rifle was positioned on the library rooftop, aimed at the field.

"Enemy sniper on the library roof," Kyogumichi whispered, crawling through the grass. "Need suppressive fire."

"On it!" Kawasaki Saki's steady voice replied. As the team's fire support, she was hidden in the opposite lecture hall with a light machine gun. "Covering fire incoming!"

A barrage of laser beams pinned the sniper, forcing them to reposition. Kyogumichi sprinted to the library entrance, mid-air firing three precise shots to take out the door guards. His movements blended explosive physicality with sharpshooting finesse.

Inside, he raced up the stairs, encountering two enemies at the second-floor corner. Instead of direct confrontation, he used the terrain, dodging and firing while staying mobile. When their ammo depleted, he closed in, striking their sensors with his rifle stock—a creative blend of swordsmanship and close-quarters combat.

"Two red team members eliminated!"

The third-floor hall was quiet, the red flag fluttering on its pole. Kyogumichi's senses caught a faint ceiling creak. He rolled aside as three enemies dropped from a ventilation duct, surrounding him.

"Got you!" The red team leader smirked, pulling the trigger.

Kyogumichi backflipped, his body arcing gracefully while firing, his shots hitting all three enemies' sensors—a feat combining climbing agility and sharpshooting precision.

"Three red team members eliminated!"

As he reached for the flag, Yukinoshita-san's warning rang out: "Behind you!" He sidestepped, a laser grazing his shoulder. The rooftop sniper had relocated to a third-floor bookshelf.

They locked into a tense standoff, muzzles trained on each other. Kyogumichi, recalling "Tekkai" principles, baited a shot by exposing his shoulder. As the enemy fired, he dodged and countered.

"Both hit simultaneously! Both eliminated!"

Kyogumichi removed his helmet, facing the sniper—the red team's sports representative. They exchanged smiles and a handshake, their thrilling duel earning referee applause.

Then, the public channel crackled: "Blue team has captured the flag! Match over! Blue team wins!"

Kyogumichi leaned against a bookshelf, sweat beading on his face, sweetened by victory's thrill. His teammates' cheers filled his headset. The battle had not only highlighted their skills but forged an unbreakable class bond.

Outside, sunlight streamed through the library windows, casting a golden glow over Kyogumichi. As he packed his gear, Kitagawa Marin rushed over, throwing her arms around him. "We won, Okabara-san! That backflip shot was unreal!"

Yukinoshita Yukino adjusted her glasses, a faint smile breaking her usual composure. "Solid tactics, though you took unnecessary risks at the end." Her rare leniency spoke volumes. Natsume Takashi offered a water bottle with a gentle smile. "Teamwork made this victory. Well done, everyone."

Under the setting sun, the blue team gathered on the sports field, waving their class flag. The sunset's red hues blended with their blue uniforms, painting a vivid scene of youthful triumph.

As dusk settled, the training ground's lights flickered on. Students trickled out, buzzing about the match's highlights. The sports festival had been a resounding success. Notably, Shinomiya Kaguya-san was absent, recovering from an illness.
