Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Blood, Bonds, and the Abyss

Chapter 22 – Blood, Bonds, and the Abyss

The world tilted.

Stone. Fire. Voices—distant, broken echoes drowning in a tide of crimson light.

[Forbidden Evolution Initiated.]

[Success Probability: 3%.]

[Commencing Rebirth Sequence…]

Chen Yue's body convulsed as the System's voice roared through his mind like a hurricane of razors. His veins lit up like molten rivers, violet and silver light searing across his skin in jagged patterns. His bones screamed as if splintering one by one, marrow boiling, organs tearing themselves apart.

He collapsed—but before his head struck the shattered marble, Ayara caught him. Her arms wrapped around his burning body, her voice breaking.

"Chen Yue! No—NO! Stop this! STOP!"

Her healing glow flared desperately, emerald mana flooding into him in waves—but the System's cold response crushed hope like glass.

[External Mana Detected: Ineffective.]

[Foreign interference will be purged.]

Ayara shrieked as her magic shattered in a backlash, the force hurling her against a fractured pillar. Blood sprayed from her lips, her bow clattering away.

"AYARA!" Velira roared, darting to catch her before she hit the ground. The frost warrior gritted her teeth, lowering Ayara gently, then whipping around toward Chen Yue with eyes blazing like frozen suns.

He lay writhing, his screams raw and inhuman as light ripped from his body in jagged shards. His skin cracked like porcelain, blood hissing into steam the moment it hit the air. His aura—if it could even be called that anymore—pulsed in waves of pure chaos, tearing at the fabric of space.

"What did you do, you idiot?!" Velira snarled, dropping to her knees beside him. Her hand hovered above his chest—then clenched into a fist.

Damn it… If I can't stop this, he'll—

The System spoke again.

[Warning: Vessel Collapse – 78%]

[Condition to Stabilize: Anchor Bonds Required.]

[Initiating Emergency Protocol: Soul Resonance.]

Velira's breath hitched as a circle of light exploded around them, a sigil of seven interlocked rings, glowing like silver fire on the shattered marble. The moment her knees touched it, agony speared her soul—a heat that wasn't heat, a pull that ripped past flesh and bone into the core of her being.

"What the—?!" she choked, clutching her chest as threads of violet light lashed out from Chen Yue's body—one coiling toward her, one toward Ayara's unconscious form.

"Anchor Bonds…" Velira hissed, realization slicing through her fury. "It's… tying us to him!"

Ayara stirred, groaning, blood staining her lips—but when the thread of light touched her, her emerald eyes snapped open, glowing with a fierce radiance. Her scream tore through the chamber as her soul ignited in resonance.

Velira gritted her teeth as the violet tether plunged into her chest like a spear of molten steel.

"Damn you, Chen Yue… if you die after this, I'll drag you back and kill you myself!"

The resonance deepened.

[Anchor Bonds Established: 2/7.]

[Stabilizing Vessel Integrity: 42%... 55%...]

Chen Yue's screams broke into a guttural roar as the violet cracks across his skin flared, merging into a lattice of luminous veins. His blood—if it could be called blood—was no longer red, but a swirling amalgam of silver and starlit violet.

Fragments of something ancient flickered across his vision—a throne of shattered skies, a hand reaching through a sea of stars, a whisper older than worlds.

Rise.

The voice wasn't the System. It was deeper, vaster, dripping with the weight of forgotten eternity.

Rise, bearer of the Nameless Flame.

The ritual surged.

Ayara's body arched violently, her breath coming in ragged sobs as her veins lit with emerald fire, her mana forcefully intertwining with Chen Yue's chaotic essence. Velira snarled through clenched teeth, frost exploding from her skin as her own soul burned in the tether.

Their screams and his merged into a single, raw chorus that shook the chamber to its foundations.

Then, silence.

A silence so heavy it crushed the breath from their lungs.

The sigil pulsed once… twice… then shattered in a storm of silver light.

Chen Yue rose.

Slowly. Agonizingly. His movements were wrong—not clumsy, not rigid, but too fluid, like a predator stretching after a long slumber. His cracked skin had healed—not with flesh, but with something deeper. His body glowed faintly beneath the surface, veins like rivers of silver fire, muscles humming with restrained violence.

His eyes opened.

No longer black. No longer human.

Twin stars burned in his sockets—violet cores rimmed with silver flame, gaze vast and cold as an endless void.

Ayara collapsed forward, catching herself on trembling arms, sweat plastering her hair to her cheeks. Her emerald eyes met his—and widened in awe and terror.

Velira staggered upright, her sword clutched in a death grip, her entire body shaking as frost hissed from her aura uncontrollably. For once, her tongue found no words.

Selene's lips curved faintly as she stepped into the ruin, her violet eyes glimmering like distant galaxies.

"You lived." Her tone was soft. Almost amused. "Barely."

Chen Yue's voice came out low. Hoarse.

But every syllable vibrated, resonating with something not of this world.

"What… happened… to me?"

The System answered before Selene could.

[Forbidden Evolution: COMPLETE.]

[Nameless Path Progression – Stage Two Unlocked.]

[Current Realm: Mortal Ascendant – First Vein.]

[New Attribute: Chaos Meridian.]

[New Skill Unlocked: Voidfire Pulse.]

[Warning: Vessel Stability – 64%. Further strain may result in permanent collapse.]

Chen Yue's fists tightened as raw power howled in his blood—a storm begging to be unleashed. He could feel it—every heartbeat like a war drum, every breath a chain snapping free.

Ayara dragged herself toward him, tears streaming down her cheeks, voice trembling.

"You… idiot… You really… came back."

Velira stared at him for a long, silent moment—then turned her head sharply, masking something raw in her icy eyes.

"Don't ever do that again," she muttered. "Or I'll kill you before the ritual does."

Chen Yue managed a weak grin.

"No promises."

Selene watched all of this quietly, her expression unreadable. But when Chen Yue's gaze met hers, something deep flickered in her violet eyes.

"The storm is awake," she said softly. "And the kings will tremble."

As if on cue, the System's voice sliced through the silence once more.

[World Broadcast: ALERT.]

[Ebonflare Kingdom declares: Chen Yue – Nameless Fragment – KILL ON SIGHT.]

[Bounty Issued: 10,000,000 Soul Crystals.]

[Threat Level: Catastrophic.]

Ayara's breath hitched. Velira's eyes narrowed dangerously.

Chen Yue… just grinned, blood dripping from his lips like ink on snow.

"Let them come."
