Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Unlikely Allies

The academy hummed with the predictable rhythm of a life Mehandi no longer belonged to. His new title as special envoy was a gilded shackle, a promise of authority that came with the expectation of obedience. He had a mission, yes, but he knew the Magisterium's timeline was too slow, their methods too cautious. The aetherial mages were a ticking clock, their captured life force slowly fading with every passing moment. He had to move on his own.

Under the cover of a moonless night, Mehandi packed a small satchel with supplies. His formal robes were left behind, replaced with the simple traveler's tunic he'd arrived in. This was a mission he would complete not as an envoy, but as himself. He had only one person to trust.

He found Anya in the desolate training hall, a place that had become their silent sanctuary. She was waiting for him, her fiery hair a beacon in the darkness. She didn't ask questions; she simply looked at his resolute expression and nodded.

"You're going after them, aren't you?" she said, her voice a low whisper. "The siphoned mages."

"I have to," Mehandi replied, his hand resting on the smooth surface of his Veritas Stone. "Their magic, their very life force, is a whisper in the aether. I can feel it. Faint, but still there." He looked at her, and in his eyes, she saw not the burden of his new title, but the weight of a solemn promise.

"Then I'm coming with you," she stated, her jaw set with determination. "My magic is a mess, but I can feel the aether too. Not like you, but... it's there. I'm a mess, and so is the world right now. Maybe together, we can fix something."

Mehandi felt a swell of relief. He had a true ally, not a partner of convenience, but a companion who understood the stakes. This new war was not just for him to fight.

They began their journey before dawn, a silent, methodical trek away from the organized magic of the academy and back into the wild. Mehandi closed his eyes, his aetherial senses spreading out like a fine net. He wasn't looking for mana signatures; he was listening for the faint, desperate auras of the siphoned mages. The trail was almost imperceptible, a broken line of light that only he could follow.

The path led them east, far into the dense, untamed forests. After days of travel, Mehandi felt a shift in the air. The faint trail of aetherial light grew stronger, a focused pulse of life, but it was being pushed back by a cold, concentrated magical pressure. He pointed to a high, rocky outcrop shrouded in mist.

"There," he whispered. "The source of the suppression. It feels like the siphon, but bigger."

Anya's eyes widened. "That's the Ironspire, a stronghold of the Merchant Guild. They say it's magically warded against all forms of entry."

Mehandi felt a cold wave of certainty. His brothers' allies were not just operating in the shadows; they were hiding in plain sight. He had a brief, chilling thought of his brothers, of their ambition and greed, and wondered if they knew the true nature of their allies. He had to try. He used his aetherial power to send a single, cryptic message through the ley lines, a word that would only be understood by a Volkov: Betrayed. It was not a plea for help, but a warning.

The war had just gone from personal to political, and now, it was a battle of faith against a force that sought to turn all magic into a commodity. They were standing at the gates of the enemy's fortress, two unlikely allies against a power far grander than they could have imagined.
