When I came to, the world was a blur of white light and pain. My body felt like it had been chewed up and spat out by a god with bad manners.
For a few seconds, I didn't move just lay there, staring at the ceiling, wondering if this was heaven, hell, or the nurse's office. Then the door creaked open, and a familiar voice dragged me back to the land of the living.
"Well, look who finally decided to wake up."
Nora.
I turned my head and saw her leaning on a pair of crutches, snow-white hair spilling over her shoulder, her blue eyes glinting like she owned the world. She looked far too pleased for someone who was supposed to be injured.
Behind her came Annalise, Xavier, Kent, Lillith… and, of all people, Liam.
"Two weeks," Xavier said with a grin, hands behind his head. "You were out for two weeks, man. We were about ready to build a statue."
"Made of what? My ashes?" I rasped.
Kent snorted, giant dark circles under his eyes. "Would've been more of a smear than a statue."
