The summer sun shone softly over the lake, warming the air and making the grass on the bank sparkle with dew. Sophie and David, still wet after their unexpected plunge, sat in folding chairs by the RV, grilling meat. The smell of barbecue mixed with the aroma of pine trees, and their laughter, still slightly nervous, echoed over the water.
Inside the trailer, they found phones, a water supply, documents, money, and a first-aid kit. It was obvious that they hadn't just come for a picnic in this car—they were living in it.
"Hmm," David drawled. "I hope we're not bums in this world and have some other housing. This little car is cozy, of course, but it's a bit cramped. And where are the books?"
There really weren't any books. But they did find an e-reader with a decent selection of downloaded works that could be read even without internet access.
A route was already plotted on the GPS navigator. They decided to follow it.
The road was deserted—no people, no houses, no cars. Obviously, they had driven into some remote area. While David drove, Sophie, with her feet propped up on the dashboard, hummed a tune.
Suddenly, their phones started beeping—messages and missed call notifications poured in. The travelers realized they had reached an area with internet reception.
Most of Sofia's messages and calls were from a contact named "Husband."
"Wow," she said. "Looks like I'm not married to you in this reality. Apparently, we're secret lovers. That's fun," she was clearly amused. "I wonder, do you have a wife here?"
Sophie turned on the video messages from the husband. They were filled with resentment and rage.
