The navigator led them to a small town, which was apparently the destination of David and Sofia from this reality. They didn't know what to do next. It wasn't clear who they were or what they did in this reality, whether they had money, or if they had any important obligations. Complete uncertainty.
The first thing they needed to do was grab a bite and fill up the car. They found a bank card in David Miller's name in the glove compartment. They could only hope it had money on it.
At the gas station, they managed to get not only fuel but also fresh apples, hot dogs, and water. Their mood immediately improved.
The gas station attendants smiled kindly at David and called him "Mr. Miller," though Sofia was clearly unknown to them.
"So, the card has money," David summarized after the outing. "What do we need to do and figure out next? What's the priority?"
"I suggest we dig through the phones—check messages, apps, and photos. That should give us some information."
They parked their RV on the side of the road and immersed themselves in data study. Sofia didn't tell David, but it was important for her to find out if she had a child or even children. After five years of marriage, they could well have appeared. That would significantly complicate a divorce. And not just a divorce—she would need to contact the husband as soon as possible and arrange a meeting with the children. If there were no children, there was no pressing need to respond to the husband right now—until the other circumstances were clarified.
David, on the other hand, was worried that they were living in an RV. Such a vehicle costs a considerable amount of money; what if his alter-ego in this universe sold an apartment to buy the trailer. Without real estate, David would feel somewhat uncomfortable.
Sofia breathed a sigh of relief and shared the results of her photo monitoring:
"There are a lot of photos. There's you, me, me with this husband (I haven't found out his name yet), some trips, some office. But thankfully, no children were found in the photos. There's reason to hope I didn't manage to acquire any during the marriage."
"One probable problem less. But you should still check this little blue app—it's called eGov. All documents are collected there. A handy thing."
"Aha, found it. How do I get in?"
"Try the fingerprint. I haven't come across such an app in our reality yet."
"It worked. Aha, Sofia Dupont. That's my name. Here's the marriage certificate, spouse—Nicolas Dupont. Curious, a French name, but he speaks English without an accent. There are no documents about children here either. We've established that. Hopefully, the divorce won't be difficult to finalize. What's your news?"
"I found the banking app. There's enough money in the account. That's all sorted too. What about your accounts?"
"Here, I see. I have a separate account. There's about 10 thousand there; we can live off that, assuming they're the same dollars as in the previous universes. And in the joint account with my husband, there are several millions. It's not blocked, fortunately. But it's better not to touch it yet. What are our plans next?"
"Enough investigating for today, I think. We need to rest. The RV is nice, of course. But I'd like to check into a hotel for at least one night—I want to wash up in comfort and eat a proper meal."
"Excellent plan. We just need to find our passports or IDs for check-in. I wonder how it works here..."
They parked by the hotel and got out of the car. A vibrant girl standing by the car next to them was excitedly talking to her friends, and suddenly all three of them quickly headed towards David and Sofia. They looked at Miller as if he were an old acquaintance they were very happy to see again.
