Chapter 96 - The Sorcerer

The scientists and security personnel in the base all turned to look at Zede, confused as to why he was suddenly talking to the air.

Loki, too, was looking at Zede in puzzlement, wanting to know how this human could see him.

Although Zede had never learned magic and couldn't see through Loki's illusions, Tezuka's psychic ability allowed him to sense Loki's presence.

Just yesterday, Zede had thought Tezuka's ability was useless—yet today, it had suddenly become indispensable. The slap to the face had come fast, sharp, and completely unexpected.

Seeing that Zede truly had his eyes on him, Loki spoke arrogantly:

"Human, why can you see me? More importantly, why do you not bow when standing before a god?"

"Heh."

Zede took out the Space-Time Driver, fastened it to his waist, and leapt down. When he landed, he was already transformed into Zi-O.

Feeling the torrent of power that burst from Zede's transformation, Loki's expression grew slightly serious."Who are you? What is your purpose here?"

Zede spread his arms and introduced himself:

"I am the Demon King of Midgard—Kamen Rider Oma Zi-O. I came here for a simple reason: to find out why Thor, the God of Thunder, was exiled to Midgard."

Loki's pupils shrank. He immediately realized this was someone with at least some understanding of Asgard. If handled poorly, this human could disrupt his plans.

Clearing his throat and straightening his suit, Loki said solemnly,

"I am Loki, the new King of Asgard. Midgard has always been a vassal realm of Asgard. You should show me respect, King of Midgard."

"Click, click." Zede clicked his tongue and shook his head. "Did I not make myself clear? I said Demon King, not King."

"Hmph, truly—wicked men from barren lands!" Loki sneered outwardly, though inwardly he was already considering how best to eliminate this troublesome human.

But Zede didn't intend to give Loki time to scheme.

"I don't know what crime Thor committed," Zede said, "but you could have exiled him anywhere else. Why send him to Midgard? This is my domain!"

"That was my father Odin's decree—and also my own will," Loki replied smoothly, rubbing his fingers together as he spoke. "My brother will live here as a mortal. He will have no impact on Midgard."

Zede's face hardened as he raised his voice, his tone filled with righteous anger.

"No impact? Look at these mortals! Look at this base! You call this no impact?"

"This is my realm, not Asgard! Since Thor is one of you, he should be imprisoned in Asgard's cells, not cast down to Midgard!"

"But my father Odin has already sealed Thor's godly powers. What's done is done." Loki dismissed Zede's anger with indifference.

Zede's voice suddenly grew sharper, almost shouting now:

"So what do you take me for—a warden? What do you take Midgard for?"

A flash of cunning light erupted in Loki's eyes. Dropping his arrogance, he suddenly slung an arm around Zede's shoulders, speaking with feigned warmth:

"Though I cannot change what has been done, Thor is still my brother. I only hope that his life here on Midgard will be a little more comfortable.

Could you perhaps arrange a quiet and peaceful place for him, so that he may enjoy the life of a mortal in comfort?

It would be the last favor I could do for him as his brother. I would, of course, personally express my gratitude to you, King of Midgard."

"Your gratitude, huh? That does sound tempting."

Both Zede and Loki smiled warmly at each other—while thinking the exact same thing: Idiot. I've got him right where I want him.

Loki then selected a few luxurious-looking—but ultimately useless—magical trinkets and handed them to Zede, repeatedly reminding him:

"My brother is in your care. Be sure the place you find is quiet and comfortable…"

"Yeah, yeah, I got it. I'm not getting involved in your family drama. Deal?" Zede said, taking out a blank watch face.

"What's that?" Loki asked suspiciously.

Zede lightly pressed a button on the watch face and said,

"This is the Midgardian ritual for sealing a deal. I don't know how you Asgardians do it."

Loki hesitated for a moment, but since Zede had pressed it first, he followed suit and pressed the button.

Intricate magical sigils burst from the watch face, wrapping around it and glowing with a dim golden light.

When the light faded, Zede waved the watch lightly in his hand."That means the contract's in effect."

Loki nodded, then turned to leave."My brother is in your hands, King of Midgard—Oma Zi-O."

Zede looked down at the new watch in his hand and began to laugh.

"Haha! Now I can use magic too. You came at just the right time, Sorcerer."(Referring to Kamen Rider Sorcerer—the golden mage from the Wizard side story.)

Zede didn't plan to use the Sorcerer Ridewatch yet—he knew perfectly well that Heimdall was still watching him from above.

When Coulson saw that Zede was holding a new watch and had canceled his transformation, he knew the mysterious "ghost" had left.

"Mr. Zede, could you please explain what just happened?" Coulson asked politely.

Walking up the steps, Zede replied casually,

"An invisible alien just dropped by. We had a friendly chat, that's all."

Coulson knew he was telling the truth—but it was the most condensed truth possible, offering practically no useful intelligence.

He sighed and shook his head. This would have to be reported to Nick Fury.

As Zede reached him, he waved his hand—and the magical trinkets Loki had given him fell to the floor with a clatter.

"These are gifts from that alien," Zede said. "I'll generously donate them to S.H.I.E.L.D."

Zede didn't dare keep gifts from the God of Mischief. Who knew what curses might be embedded in them? Handing them off to S.H.I.E.L.D. was the safest choice.

Leaving the items behind, Zede wrapped an arm around Skye and Lilith and headed back to the lounge, utterly unconcerned with the stares that followed.

Jemma watched them pass, only turning to Fitz after they disappeared around the corner.

"Do all men act like that?"

"Uh… I… um…"

The question didn't stump Fitz—it just terrified him. He couldn't tell the truth, and he was hopeless at lying, so he ended up stammering incoherently.

"Alright, you two—analyze these items," Coulson said, rescuing Fitz from the awkward situation.

Fitz immediately took the hint and began unpacking instruments to scan the magical artifacts. Jemma, not expecting Fitz to come up with any witty reply anyway, joined him in the analysis.

"Judging from the decorative style, these are of the same origin as that hammer," Jemma said as she examined them closely.

Fitz tinkered with his scanner. "They're all radiating unique energy signatures—but compared to the hammer, they're much weaker."

"So they are alien artifacts, then," Jemma concluded.

Coulson looked up at the night sky, recalling the first time he'd encountered aliens back in his younger days. He still remembered—his hair had been much thicker then.

"Seal these up and ship them back to headquarters," he ordered.

He was about to leave to report to Nick Fury when an unexpected visitor—Dr. Erik Selvig—interrupted his plan.

"His name's Donald Blake?" Coulson asked, hands in his pockets.

"Yes. He's got quite the temper. When he heard that you guys… confiscated the research data, he… he got agitated… lost his head and rushed over," Dr. Selvig stammered, his explanation full of holes.

Coulson turned toward the agent checking Donald Blake's ID. The agent shook his head silently—it was a fake identity.

Although Selvig had lied, Coulson didn't press him. He allowed the doctor to take Thor away.

Watching the two leave, Coulson said quietly, "Keep them under surveillance."

After wrapping up the Thor situation, Coulson was about to head back when he ran into Zede, who was on his way out.

"What's the matter, Mr. Zede? Heading out so late?" Coulson asked curiously.

Zede sighed and shook his head.

"You guys work so hard. It's a shame the accommodations here are so terrible. Your folding cots are barely an upgrade from the bed I had in my old storage room."

Coulson was speechless. This was a temporary base, not a five-star hotel—what was he expecting?

"So, what exactly are you asking, Mr. Zede?" Coulson asked with a polite but unreadable smile.

Zede patted Coulson on the shoulder and said solemnly,

"Arrange for someone to drive us back to town. The hotel there's way more comfortable. I think Agent May's driving skills are pretty good—she should be able to get us back before eleven. Yep."

May's eyes widened. First you come here, now you want to leave?

"May…" Coulson sighed, glancing at her helplessly.

May took a deep breath. "I'm fine. I'm a professional agent. Let's go—right now. I'll have you back by ten-thirty."

…"Dei Xia Hu…" (A humorous mutter akin to "What the hell…")

Zede's sudden decision to return to town was partly because S.H.I.E.L.D.'s sleeping arrangements were far too spartan—single folding beds were simply inhumane.

The other reason was that he was itching to draw a prize. Judging by the time, Heimdall should've shifted his gaze elsewhere by now—let him and Loki play their political games.

Zede pulled out the Sorcerer Ridewatch, ready to transform. Lilith, ever considerate, drew the curtains for him.

A golden magic circle—square on the outside, round on the inside, with four pointed corners—appeared behind Zede. As it passed through his Zi-O form, a golden mage's robe wrapped around him.

Zede could feel a suffocating aura of despair enveloping him. The world around him sank into total darkness—only a solar eclipse hung high above, glowing coldly in the void.
