Chapter 26 - Chapter 25: Eyes That Awaken

My Fake Engagement With The Villainess Turned Real

Chapter 25: Eyes That Awaken

Beyond the heavy, sealed door lay a stone corridor, its cool air enveloping them like a forgotten embrace. The dimness was punctuated by delicate shafts of sunlight that struggled to penetrate the age-old stonework, filtering through narrow slits perched high up along the walls. Each step they took reverberated softly, the echoes humming within the passage and further anchoring them into the waking world from which they had just emerged.

Kaela turned her head, casting one last lingering glance back at the imposing door that had sealed them away from whatever had transpired within. Expelling a quiet breath that felt heavy with foreboding, she asked, "That door isn't going to open again, is it?"

Aiden, standing solidly beside her, shook his head, his expression unyielding. "No. Whatever we needed from that place, we've already taken it."

Her brows furrowed as she contemplated his words, and after a thoughtful pause, she replied, "Or perhaps it took something from us."

As they walked, silence enveloped them like a thick fog, punctuated only by the sound of their footfalls. The atmosphere was steeped in unspoken thoughts and shared memories, heavy with implication and unacknowledged fears.

Breaking the silence, Kaela's voice was low and hesitant. "Do you feel like we're being watched?"

Aiden slowed, his senses sharpening. "Yes. But it's not the same sensation as before. It feels more... deliberate."

The corridor opened up, cascading into a wide terrace that overlooked a breathtaking panorama. The valley sprawled beneath them, and the city of Veyrindral lay resplendent in the distance, its spires glinting in the waning light of the afternoon sun. Wisps of smoke curled languidly from the chimneys, and the distant hum of life-voices, laughter, and the bustle of daily existence-rose up like a gentle, soothing melody.

Kaela leaned against the rugged stone railing, her hands resting upon its weathered surface. "The world looks the same as it always has," she remarked, her tone a blend of nostalgia and wonder.

"It never changes all at once," Aiden replied, his gaze fixed on the horizon, where the sun began to sink beneath its golden throne. "It waits, watching and preparing."

The tranquility of the moment was abruptly shattered by a faint rustle behind them, causing Kaela to instinctively pivot, bow half-raised, her senses ignited. "We're not alone."

From the shadows emerged a man dressed in dark travel leathers, his demeanor relaxed but clearly alert. A sigil stitched into the fabric of his cloak shimmered momentarily as he shifted, drawing their attention.

"I was hoping you'd notice," he spoke, his tone calm yet laced with an undercurrent of potential danger.

Aiden remained tense, not relinquishing his guard. "Who are you?" he demanded, the urgency of his posture speaking volumes.

Raising his hands in a gesture of peace, the man replied, "No enemy. At least, not yet. My name is Corren."

Kaela narrowed her eyes, skepticism coursing through her. "That's hardly reassuring."

Corren allowed a faint smile to grace his lips. "It's honest, at the very least."

He scrutinized them with an intensity that made Kaela's skin prickle, his gaze lingering curiously on their wrists before returning to their faces. "So the rumors were true after all," he remarked, a glimmer of intrigue lighting his expression.

Aiden's demeanor stiffened. "What rumors?"

"Rumors of the sanctum opening," Corren explained, his voice steady. "And that someone-a markless stranger-has ventured out, carrying the sigil of its passage."

Kaela felt a tightening in her grip on the bow as understanding dawned. "That didn't take long," she muttered, a hint of frustration threading through her words.

Corren shrugged nonchalantly. "The world has been waiting longer than you might think. Change is a slow tide, but it often sweeps in suddenly."

Aiden stepped forward into the growing tension. "Who sent you?"

He shook his head slowly. "No one. I follow patterns. When certain patterns shift, it draws my attention like moths to a flame."

Kaela scoffed, exhaustion tinging her voice. "And you expect us to put blind faith in that?"

"No," Corren replied evenly. "What I expect is for you to survive whatever comes next."

A profound silence fell between them, thick but not overtly hostile. Every heartbeat seemed amplified in the stillness, brimming with unasked questions and uncertainties.

Finally, Aiden broke the quiet. "Then share this with us. Who else is paying attention to these shifts?"

The serious expression that settled over Corren's face was stark against the clarity of the day. "The Crown's Seers. The Hollow Accord. And beings much older than both."

Kaela muttered under her breath, "Of course," the weariness of the world pressing down on her shoulders.

Corren glanced at her, perceptive. "You should leave the city sooner rather than later. Eyes gather quickly when destiny starts to stir."

Aiden met Corren's gaze steadily. "And why extend this warning?"

Corren hesitated for a fleeting moment, the weight of his words palpable as he finally confessed, "Because once, I stood where you are now. I faced a choice, and I ignored the warning signs."

Kaela scrutinized him closely, searching for an understanding of his burden. "What happened to the others who ignored it?"

His jaw clenched, regret etching lines across his features. "They didn't listen. They paid the ultimate price for their disbelief."

Aiden released a slow exhale, the gravity of the situation settling deeper within him. "Then we will heed your warning."

Corren nodded once, a flicker of respect crossing his face. "Good. That means you might have a chance at survival."

Step by step, he retreated into the shadows from which he had emerged, a figure of somber portent. "We will meet again," he stated cryptically. "Whether as allies or as obstacles depends entirely on the choices you make next."

Kaela could not resist calling after him, a note of incredulity in her voice. "You seem awfully confident that we'll cross paths again."

Corren paused, glancing over his shoulder with a look that was both knowing and haunting. "Marked paths tend to intersect more often than you might wish," he said, and then he slipped into the shadows without another word, his presence fading like a ghost.

As the terrace sank back into quietude, Kaela let out a breath she hadn't known she was holding. "Well. That was ominous," she remarked, a mixture of exasperation and determination flaring within her.

Aiden leaned against the stone railing beside her, his hands resting there as he stared out over the sprawling city. "He wasn't lying," he stated firmly.

She turned her gaze to him, curiosity swirling behind her eyes. "How can you be so sure?"

"Because fear has a distinct sound, especially when it's earned," Aiden declared, recalling the weight of Corren's warning. "And he carried it with an honesty that is hard to fake."

Kaela nodded slowly, understanding forming in the spaces between her thoughts. "Then what comes next for us?"

With a penetrating gaze, Aiden looked out over the city as the sunlight glimmered off distant towers, casting elongated shadows across the earth. "Now we move. Before the world fully awakens and the repercussions of our choices begin to unfold."

She smiled, a fierce determination filling her posture with resolve. "Good. I was starting to feel a little too comfortable with all this stillness."

Just then, the wind stirred playfully, sweeping through the terrace and carrying the distant sound of Veyrindral's bells, their tones ringing with a melodic urgency.

Somewhere within the bustling city, unseen forces began to shift, reconfiguring themselves in response to the awakening of a new journey.

And for the first time in what felt like ages, they were no longer merely the ones who watched from the shadows.

They were being watched in return.
