Chapter 42 - Episode 42 — “Retrieval Unit”

Level: 20 — Event Class

Origin Node — Core Chamber

The prototypes were gone.

The chamber was shaking.

Silver veins across the walls pulsed faster — not defensive now.

Summoning.

Zack stood in front of the suspended core.

Steel dented.

Side bleeding slowly.

Energy reserves strained but stable.

The core rotated faster.

Then—

The floor beneath it split open.

A circular platform rose from below.

And standing on it…

Was something not mechanical.

Not fully human.

Not fully metal.

A person.

Alive.

Eyes silver.

Skin normal.

But veins glowing faintly beneath the surface.

No exoskeleton.

No rigid structure.

Fluid.

Controlled.

Perfect posture.

"Retrieval Unit One," the core voice echoed internally.

Zack's eyes narrowed.

This wasn't a prototype.

This was success.

The Reveal

The figure stepped off the platform calmly.

"You achieved Event Class without stabilization," the unit said.

Voice calm.

Measured.

Almost polite.

Zack didn't respond.

The unit tilted its head slightly.

"Structural integrity: impressive."

"You are inefficient, however."

Zack exhaled slowly.

"You talk too much."

He moved first.

The First Clash

The retrieval unit didn't explode forward.

It flowed.

Zack's punch landed.

Or he thought it did.

The unit shifted density mid-contact.

Impact redirected.

Zack staggered half-step.

That's new.

The unit countered lightly.

Palm to sternum.

Zack flew backward into the chamber wall.

Steel cracked across chest plate.

He rolled up immediately.

Triggered synergy.

Seven seconds.

Clarity surged.

He saw it now.

The retrieval unit wasn't brute-force dense.

It was adaptable density.

It could shift structural composition mid-strike.

Five seconds.

Zack landed two clean hits.

One to jaw.

One to rib.

Real impact.

The unit stepped back.

Interesting.

Six seconds.

Synergy ended.

The unit pressed immediately during cooldown.

Clean elbow.

Joint disruption attempt.

Centerline dominance.

Zack barely held guard.

This wasn't like Level 22.

This was… optimized.

The Truth

"You are prototype branch alpha," the unit said calmly while striking.

"I am stabilized branch omega."

Zack absorbed a hit.

"What does that mean?"

"It means I do not evolve."

"I am finished."

That line hit.

Finished.

No growth.

No instability.

No emotion.

Perfect weapon.

Perfect tool.

Zack triggered synergy again.

Seven seconds.

This time he didn't chase damage.

He tested adaptation timing.

He noticed something.

When the unit shifts density—

There is a micro-delay.

A fraction of a second.

He targeted that.

Strike.

Shift.

Strike again during delay.

The unit staggered for the first time.

Silver glow flickered slightly in its veins.

Five seconds.

Six.

Synergy ended.

Zack didn't collapse.

But energy reserves now low.

Outside — Pressure Rising

Above ground—

The warehouse roof cracked.

Silver energy beam shot upward briefly.

Hunters braced.

Darius stepped forward.

Custodians calculating rapidly.

Cinder watching the skyline.

"If stabilization completes…" he muttered quietly.

Below—

The Adaptation

The retrieval unit stopped attacking.

Its silver veins pulsed brighter.

"Adaptive recalibration initiated."

That's bad.

It was learning from synergy windows.

He couldn't outlast it.

He couldn't overpower it.

And he couldn't let it complete synchronization.

The core pulsed again.

RETRIEVAL PHASE 2 PREPARING

The unit's eyes locked onto Zack's.

"You will be stabilized."

Zack wiped blood from his mouth.

"No."

The Turning Point

Instead of attacking the unit—

He attacked the core.

Full steel.

No synergy.

Just raw force.

He leapt past the retrieval unit and slammed his fist into the rotating silver sphere.

The chamber exploded in vibration.

The unit reacted instantly.

Too late.

A crack formed along the surface of the core.

Tiny.

But real.

The retrieval unit grabbed Zack from behind.

Locked arms around his torso.

"Structural misalignment detected," it said.

Silver veins surged through its body.

Trying to interface.

Trying to complete retrieval forcibly.

Zack felt the pull.

Level 21 hovering at the edge.

Artificial stabilization ready to trigger.

This is the moment.

If he lets it—

He becomes omega branch.

Finished.

Controlled.

If he resists—

The node may overload.

Cascade risk rises.

System screamed.

FORCED ASCENSION ATTEMPT

HOST CONSENT REQUIRED

He roared.

Not rage.

Choice.

Steel surged outward violently.

Not adaptive.

Not fluid.

Raw.

Uncontrolled density.

He slammed backward into the core.

The crack widened.

The retrieval unit's silver glow flickered heavily.

The chamber began shaking violently.

Final Line

The retrieval unit whispered calmly in his ear:

"If you destroy this… you destroy what you are."

Zack bared steel fangs.

"I'll build my own."

And drove his fist deeper into the cracked core.

The entire chamber detonated in silver light.

End of Episode 42.
