The headmaster's office.

Dumbledore turned the crystal vial in his hands, studying the liquid inside with obvious satisfaction. Lucien's improvement was a real help. He wasn't just being polite.

With this version, Remus should finally have no excuse to refuse.

Dumbledore had already chosen his next Defense Against the Dark Arts professor—Remus Lupin. Gryffindor alumnus, exceptionally skilled at the subject. The only obstacle was his condition. He was a werewolf.

It wasn't Remus's fault. He had been bitten as a boy by a vindictive werewolf. Dumbledore had known the truth before Remus even started at Hogwarts and had protected him through all seven years. After graduation, though, the rest of the wizarding world made its prejudice clear. Remus had struggled to find steady work. He needed the income.

It was too late to bring him in this term, but next year was wide open.

Dumbledore had originally planned to ask Severus to improve the Wolfsbane Potion. He was busy chasing Voldemort and simply didn't have the time. Still, the old rivalry between Severus and Remus gave him pause. James Potter and Severus had clashed constantly back then, and Remus, as James's friend, had been caught in the middle more than once. Surely after all these years they could behave like adults?

Dumbledore set the vial down and gave Lucien a warm smile.

"By the way, how is your Patronus coming along? I asked Severus, but he refused to tell me anything. Said he wanted to see it with his own eyes before he'd believe it."

Dumbledore had no idea why Severus was being so secretive, but it had only made him more curious.

Lucien pulled out his wand, then hesitated.

"Headmaster… I don't think there's enough room in here for my Patronus."

Dumbledore waved a hand.

"Go ahead. Try it anyway."

He was genuinely intrigued now. Was the boy's Patronus unusually large?

Lucien didn't argue. He raised his wand.

"Expecto Patronum."

The mist that flowed from the tip was controlled and steady—nothing like the overwhelming flood from his earlier attempts. He had grown much better at handling the spell.

Silver-white vapor gathered quickly and shaped itself into a phoenix. The silver bird spread its wings and circled once above the desk. It wasn't huge, but every feather looked sharp and elegant, as if spun from silver thread. Its long tail trailed sparks of light behind it.

Dumbledore's eyes crinkled with quiet delight as he watched it fly. Without the color, it could have been Fawkes himself.

In his nest, Fawkes lifted his head and peered at the silver phoenix with mild curiosity. He had seen plenty of phoenix-shaped Patronuses over the years—mostly Dumbledore's. This one clearly didn't belong to the headmaster. He glanced at the boy sitting across from Dumbledore.

Lucien, huh.

Fawkes let out a soft, tired trill and tucked his head back down. He had flown enough lately following Dumbledore around. He was in no mood to investigate silver birds.

Dumbledore was about to say something when movement on the desk caught his eye.

A silver owl had appeared out of nowhere. It sat right on the polished wood, round and fluffy, staring at him with enormous dark eyes. Two little tufts stuck up from its head like ears. It looked almost comically cute.

Dumbledore's smile froze. He looked from the owl to the phoenix still circling overhead, then back to Lucien.

He had been about to say they shared the same Patronus. The words died in his throat.

Then he noticed the silver mist still pouring from the tip of Lucien's wand. It hadn't stopped. If anything, it was gathering again, already starting to form another shape.

Dumbledore's voice came out sharper than he intended.

"Wait—how many Patronuses do you have?"
