Chapter 227 - A New Assignment

Satoru's surprise was genuine. They had not properly spoken since Team Five had been disbanded, the distance between them growing as their paths diverged. The sight of her produced a different reaction from the formal recognition he had received at the division; familiarity, nostalgia, and genuine pleasure at seeing someone he considered a friend.

Mariko greeted him casually, her voice carrying the warmth of their shared history. "Hey, Chūnin. Long time no see."

Satoru's response was measured. "How long have you been waiting?"

Mariko admitted she had been there for a while. "Long enough to wonder if you had forgotten where you lived."

Satoru invited her inside, his movements automatic, his mind still processing her presence.

Mariko commented on something familiar about the place, allowing the scene to establish their old dynamic. "You still have that same pot," she said, gesturing toward the corner of the kitchen. "I remember that from when we used to cook together after missions."

Satoru noticed that despite the changes in rank and assignments, talking to Mariko still felt easy. The years of shared experience had created a bond that rank could not erase. He decided to make food while they talked. He started preparing a simple dinner; rice, grilled fish, and miso soup. The familiar ritual was grounding, a reminder of the ordinary moments that had defined their time together.

Mariko explained what life had been like since Team Five had disbanded. She had been placed in the Genin Reserve, her assignments mostly low-level D-rank missions. Her voice carried a note of frustration at how little opportunity she had been given to prove herself. She discussed her new sensei, her words careful, her tone measured. She did not openly accuse the sensei of being incompetent, but she clearly did not trust them yet. Their teaching style and expectations did not mesh well with her.

Satoru listened while continuing to cook, his movements automatic, his attention divided between the food and her words. There was a subtle sense that Mariko had been left behind while his career had accelerated, the gap between them widening with each passing month.

Mariko casually brought up Ren. Satoru expected another ordinary update, but instead, she revealed that Ren had recently been involved in a fight with a Chūnin from another squad. He had been dragged into a disciplinary review, the consequences serious.

Satoru was genuinely surprised. Ren's temper and stubbornness were familiar, but getting into a serious fight with another Chūnin was a different matter. Mariko gave him the basic story, her voice carrying a mixture of exasperation and affection. "He said the other guy was asking for it. Which, knowing Ren, probably means he started it." The moment reinforced that although Team Five had separated, they still remained connected.

The conversation gradually shifted toward the changes in their lives. Mariko acknowledged that Satoru had advanced quickly after Team Five. Satoru did not boast about it; he recognised that their paths had simply diverged. There was a subtle emotional distance caused by rank; he was now a Chūnin with Intelligence and Sensory Division experience, while Mariko was still in the Genin Reserve. Neither directly complained about the difference, and the scene remained warm rather than bitter. Satoru tried to make it clear that he had not forgotten the team or the people he had trained with.

Mariko turned the question around, asking what Satoru had been doing. He gave her a simplified version of his recent career, explaining that his assignments had rotated through different Yamanaka divisions. He mentioned his time with Field Intelligence, his recent two-week internship with Sensory Operations, and his experimentation with unconventional sensory techniques. He avoided making the explanation sound more impressive than it was, his tone modest, his words measured.

Eventually, he casually mentioned the most important part: he had been certified as a specialised A-rank sensor.

Mariko stopped what she was doing, her expression changing immediately. She was genuinely impressed; becoming an A-rank sensor was a significant achievement, a recognition of capability that most shinobi never attained. She congratulated him, her voice carrying the warmth of genuine pride.

Satoru responded modestly, explaining that the classification came with plenty of conditions. His voice was measured, his tone careful. "It is not a finished product. There is still a lot of work to do."

Mariko's smile suggested that she already knew that was exactly the sort of thing Satoru would say. Her voice carried a note of amusement. "Only you would get an A-rank certification and immediately start talking about its limitations."

Then she revealed that his new certification was precisely why she had come to see him. A Sarutobi clan squad was being dispatched on a B-rank border investigation. Their regular sensor had been injured and could not participate, and the squad needed a replacement quickly. Mariko had immediately thought of Satoru.

Satoru asked why she thought he was suitable. Mariko explained that his sensory ability filled the missing role, his Mind Echo jutsu could allow the squad to coordinate without relying on conventional communication, and his new sensory capability gave them an additional layer of detection. More importantly, she trusted him. The request was not simply professional; Mariko had specifically sought him out because she believed he could help.

Satoru paused. The timing was terrible. He had just completed two weeks of gruelling sensory training and evaluation, and his body and eyes were still exhausted. He did not know the Sarutobi squad, and he questioned whether they would actually trust an outsider brought in at the last minute. He also pointed out that the mission was B-rank, meaning the possibility of genuine danger was significant.

Mariko acknowledged the risks but maintained that the squad needed someone capable. Her voice was firm, her conviction absolute. "I would not have come to you if I did not think you could handle it."

During the conversation, Satoru continued cooking while distracted. His spatula remained hovering over the fish as he considered Mariko's proposal, the silence stretching. Smoke began rising from the pan.

Mariko suddenly noticed, her voice sharp. "Satoru! The fish!"

Satoru snapped out of his thoughts, swearing and hurriedly trying to rescue the meal. The fish was already burned, its surface blackened, its aroma sharp and acrid. Mariko laughed, the sound bright and genuine. Satoru gave her an irritated look before laughing as well.

After the laughter faded, Mariko made her argument more personal. She did not pressure him aggressively; instead, she reminded him that he had been looking for opportunities to apply his abilities outside controlled environments. This would be a genuine field assignment, a chance to help people who actually needed a sensor. His new abilities could make a meaningful difference. She also made it clear that she would not have come to him if she did not trust his abilities.

Satoru considered the request more seriously, his reluctance gradually giving way to professional curiosity. He finally agreed to take the assignment, making it clear that he wanted the mission details before deployment. Mariko was visibly relieved, her shoulders relaxing, her smile genuine. She thanked him, her voice warm.

Satoru reminded her that he had not even met the squad yet. Mariko responded that they would meet before deployment, her tone carrying the confidence of someone who had already planned ahead.
