Chapter 237 - Permanent Scarring

The words hung in the air like a blade suspended mid-fall. Satoru stared at Kōichi, his mind racing, his thoughts sharp and urgent. He had been injured by Sasori, yes, but he had assumed the poison had been treated, that the damage was already being repaired. The casual way Kōichi had delivered the news suggested otherwise.

"Poisoned?" Satoru's voice was flat, his eyes narrowing. "You mean the poison is still circulating?"

Kōichi's expression shifted, his eyes widening slightly. "You did not know?" His voice carried genuine surprise. "I assumed the medical staff had already told you."

Satoru's jaw tightened. "They told me I was injured. They told me I needed to rest."

Kōichi studied him for a long moment, his gaze steady. "The medics may have deliberately avoided giving you the full prognosis while you were unstable. They would not want to risk a reaction that could worsen your condition."

Satoru's thoughts immediately turned analytical. His inability to move properly, his unstable chakra circulation, his inability to channel chakra normally. He had assumed these symptoms were separate issues, each one a consequence of the battle. Now he realized they might all have been connected, a single thread running through his entire recovery.

Kōichi rose slowly, his movements deliberate. "You should speak directly to the medical staff. Do not rely on incomplete information." He paused at the door, his voice quiet. "I am sorry I could not bring you better news."

The door slid shut behind him, and Satoru was alone. He stared at the closed door, his unease growing with each passing moment. The silence of the room pressed against him, heavy and expectant. He needed answers. He needed the truth.

He called for Fujimori Kana, his voice carrying an edge of urgency. When she entered, her expression was professional, her posture calm. She moved to his bedside, her hands already glowing with diagnostic chakra.

"You called for me?" she asked.

Satoru's voice was flat. "What poison was used? How long have I been poisoned? Why was I not informed? Is it still inside my body?"

Kana's hands stilled. Her expression shifted, the professional calm giving way to something more serious. "You were not told because your condition was unstable. The medical team did not want to risk a psychological reaction that could worsen your physical state." She paused, her voice softening. "But you are stable now. You deserve to know the truth."

She pulled up a chair beside his bed, her movements slow, deliberate. The scrape of the legs against the floor seemed loud in the silence. She sat, her hands folded in her lap, her gaze steady.

"The poison is called Kurodoku," she said. "Black Poison. It is not a conventional toxin. It contains three major components; a heavy-metal component that damages cells gradually, a chakra-reactive component that binds to chakra as it moves through the tenketsu, and a regenerative inhibitor that prevents the body from completely repairing the damage."

Satoru's voice was flat. "So why am I still alive?"

Kana's response was measured. "The poison is deliberately slow. It does not overwhelm the body immediately; instead, it gradually forces the body into a damaged but survivable state." She paused, her gaze steady. "Sasori did not need to kill you. The poison would do the work for him."

The words settled into Satoru's chest like cold stones. Sasori had not spared them out of mercy; he had simply known that the poison would take its time. The realisation was unsettling, a reminder of the enemy's cold calculation.

Kana continued, "The most significant damage was not simply to your physical body. Kurodoku interfered with the relationship between physical and spiritual energy involved in chakra production."

She explained the Yin and Yang distinction in terms Satoru could understand. Yin represented spiritual energy; Yang represented physical energy and vitality. Satoru already had an unusual chakra composition because of his Uchiha and Yamanaka heritage. His chakra had historically leaned toward Yin; before poisoning, it was approximately sixty percent Yin and forty percent Yang. Kurodoku had disproportionately damaged the physical and Yang side of his chakra production.

Satoru initially assumed this meant his Yin-heavy chakra had become even more extreme. Kana corrected him. His current ratio was actually closer to fifty-five percent Yin and forty-five percent Yang. His ratio had become healthier, but his total chakra capacity had become dramatically smaller.

Satoru paused at the apparent contradiction. He understood the implication immediately, and the realisation struck him like a physical blow. His ratio was healthier, but his capacity was reduced. The balance had shifted, but the total volume had shrunk. The news was shocking, surprising, and infuriating all at once. His hands trembled slightly, his jaw tightening.

Kana explained that before the poisoning, Satoru had unusually strong reserves for his age. His effective capacity had been roughly equivalent to one hundred per cent of his previous baseline. After stabilization, he was operating at roughly seventy-five to eighty-five percent of that baseline, with his practical combat reserves potentially functioning closer to the lower end depending on exertion and recovery. More importantly, the chakra he could actually use safely was now comparable to what he would previously have considered Genin-level reserves.

Satoru was visibly disturbed by that description. "Is this temporary?"

Kana did not answer immediately. Her silence was answer enough. She told him that the reduction was not expected to disappear with recovery. The damage was permanent.

Satoru pointed out that he was still extremely young. His chakra reserves were supposed to continue increasing as his body developed. Kana confirmed that they still might grow, but not significantly. The damaged system could still produce chakra, but its maximum production capacity had been permanently reduced.

He internally compared it to a damaged engine; it could still run, could still improve with maintenance, but it would never reach the performance it might originally have achieved. Kana used a medical analogy similar to permanent scarring; the body could continue functioning and developing, but some of the original capacity was gone.

Satoru's thoughts became increasingly quiet as he processed what this meant. He had always assumed his greatest advantage would be the trajectory of his growth. Now that trajectory had been permanently altered.

He asked why his chakra control had been so unstable in the hospital. Kana explained that this was precisely why they had repeatedly stopped him from deliberately circulating chakra. They wanted time to study the changes, then move to the diagnosis. His chakra network had been damaged and needed time to stabilise. Every forced chakra circulation placed additional strain on the injured pathways.

Satoru mentally replayed his earlier attempts; trying to move chakra through his body, feeling the sluggish circulation, attempting to test his abilities, and being repeatedly told to stop. He realized the medical staff had not simply been being cautious. They had been preventing him from worsening the damage. His earlier frustration at being unable to train suddenly felt misplaced.

He asked the question he had been avoiding. "Can you repair it?"

Kana's voice was gentle but firm. "Medical ninjutsu can repair damaged tissue and stabilise your chakra pathways. It cannot restore the original production capacity that Kurodoku destroyed. The problem is systemic rather than a simple wound. The poison damaged the very mechanisms responsible for producing and circulating chakra. Healing individual cells does not restore the entire system to its previous state."

Satoru asked whether they could simply keep healing him until the damage was gone. Kana explained that the results became increasingly limited. They could improve his current condition, but they could not recreate what was lost.

He asked whether an antidote existed. Kana explained that this was another reason his case was particularly frustrating. The poison itself had largely left his bloodstream. Satoru initially struggled to understand why that made an antidote impossible. Kana explained the sequence; poison led to cellular damage, which led to chakra-network damage, and then the poison disappeared, leaving the damage behind. The toxin had effectively burned itself out. By the time Konoha understood the full nature of his condition, there was no longer enough active poison to target. An antidote would therefore not restore the lost function.

Satoru asked whether they could somehow recreate the poison and develop an antidote from it. Kana firmly rejected the idea as medically unsound and potentially dangerous. Satoru accepted the answer but clearly disliked it.

He asked for his prognosis in the bluntest possible terms. Kana told him that he was no longer actively deteriorating from the poison, his body had stabilised, and he was expected to recover physically to a functional degree.

Satoru asked what "functional" meant. Kana gave him the uncomfortable truth; he would recover, he would be able to walk, he would be able to use chakra, and he might eventually return to shinobi activity. But he would not return to the exact physical and chakra condition he possessed before the mission.

Then came the central line. "Your body is not dying. That is the problem."

Satoru understood immediately. There was no dramatic countdown, no poison slowly killing him, no cure waiting to be discovered. The damage had simply become part of him.

He asked what this meant for his Sharingan. Kana explained that the Sharingan itself was not necessarily permanently damaged. The problem was the cost of using it. Every activation placed additional demands on his already reduced chakra reserves. Before Kurodoku, Satoru could sustain Sharingan usage through prolonged engagements. Now, prolonged Sharingan use could drain him extremely quickly. His ability remained intact, but his ability to afford it had changed.

Satoru asked whether his Sharingan would become stronger as he grew. Kana gave the medically cautious answer; potentially, yes, but increased ability did not necessarily mean increased endurance. The cost would remain a limitation.
