"Thank you for helping with my research, Lord Nebiros," I said.
"You don't have to thank me, Inflis," he replied. "And since you are already talking to me so casually, you can just call me by my name."
"I am afraid," I said, my face serious, "that if other people hear me being so familiar with you, the unpleasant rumors about our relationship might start up again with new energy."
The eye of one of the leaders of the Six Great Houses twitched.
"I am not… Let's just forget about that," he said, clearly flustered. "Your breakthrough in studying the control of life energy through medicines and working with the natural energy around us has allowed me to look at some things in a new way. After all, in the world right now, only the youkai and some groups in Asia can officially control natural energy, and they carefully guard the secrets of their special techniques."
"I was just lucky," I said humbly, "with my family's special power, and with my curiosity about some of the medicines our healers have."
"And you were able to use that luck, unlike many others," he said. "The ability to correctly use an opportunity that comes your way only makes you more valuable as a partner in my research. But for now, I must go back home to do my duties as the leader of my House. I hope that you will think carefully about my offer to join the Institute of New Developments in the future, which is now under the protection of the House of Lucifer."
"I still have hundreds of years of life ahead of me," I replied, "so I am not in a hurry to take on new responsibilities. I am not experienced enough to be of use to the Ruler's family."
"Then, until we meet again."
Zaorom Nebiros, who was standing on the platform used for teleporting guests, gave me a small smirk before he disappeared in the light of a magic circle with the seal of the House of Nebiros.
I looked at the guards who were standing straight as arrows, and then I turned to walk toward my workshop. I could almost feel Ansted's men relax.
It was really funny that the best of the Underworld's military power was more afraid of the second son of their leader, who his own father clearly didn't love, than they were of the heir or their own commander.
But for the proud demons, the idea of being beaten in a practice fight by a child who wasn't even fifteen years old was very painful in every way.
After all, I held those practice fights according to the strict rules of the Black Heart clan, so it was not uncommon for them to end up with broken bones and serious internal injuries.
Luckily, my Yang Restoration Pills were very good at healing wounds. So, some of the "unlucky" ones who had caused problems for the guard captain or his deputies might end up in the healer's care several times a week after my "practice fights."
After that, they became surprisingly disciplined and hardworking. And I got a certain reputation.
But right now, I was more worried about getting my old power back than about my reputation. Without it, my preparations for the coming civil war were meaningless.
The practice fights with the guards and hunting monsters in the areas controlled by demons were not as helpful as they used to be.
The guards held back subconsciously, and killing them would cause problems if I didn't hold back myself, so the challenge was not great enough.
And the stupid, mid-rank monsters were no longer a serious problem for me because I knew their habits and they weren't strong enough to make up for that weakness.
None of this could give me the "push" I needed to break through to the Qi Condensation stage quickly.
Besides using resources to force a breakthrough, I needed to either find a way to push my body to its absolute limit, or break through the "wall" by gathering a huge amount of qi.
So, I decided to use both options by "traveling" to the creatures that lived in the no-man's-lands, the free territories of the Underworld that neither the fallen, nor the demons, nor the reapers claimed.
In the years since I had woken up in this body, I had been able to study the Underworld in more detail and had come to some conclusions.
The first one was that the Underworld itself was very dependent on, and was even a kind of extension of, another world.
It was most likely the human world, but I would have to visit it myself to be sure. But through my very weak senses and by studying the geography of the Underworld, I was able to figure out that many of the Laws that ran through this world were not complete or were very weak, like the Laws of Space, Water, and Light.
They were very unstable and easy to change, which was why, with enough effort, the demons here could even change the color of the sky or control the air currents, thereby guiding rain clouds to the places where they needed them.
And this also explained why the Underworld was broken up into different layers of space and why things like spatial cracks appeared in those same no-man's-lands.
If I believed my magic tutor, these were holes that appeared on their own into the space between worlds, which could kill any high-rank or weaker being.
According to the old records in the Lucifuge mansion's library, the Underworld used to be made up of many separate, poorly connected dimensions, where different groups of gods lived.
They shamelessly called themselves Gods of Death and fought with each other for control over the souls of the dead.
This "peaceful" state of constant fighting was soon interrupted by the Biblical mythology, which began its Great Crusade against other mythologies and ended up destroying most of the local gods.
After Lucifer fell, he and three other Rulers were able to "unite the Underworld, creating Hell and the demon race," by simply connecting most of the dimensions into one.
Soon after, the fallen angels who had come down to the Underworld and did not want to follow the First Ruler began to fight for it.
It was probably only because the Biblical mythology was split and the fallen had appeared in the Underworld that the "lucky" Hades, the god of death from the Greek pantheon who was left in the Underworld, was able to keep his lands in the lower part of the world, while the other gods either died or ran back to their own mythologies, having lost most of their power.
