Chapter 15 - “When Confidence Whispered In”

Morning felt different on Yuni's second day.

Not lighter… not heavier… just steadier.

Sunlight slipped through her curtains as she tied her hair slowly, staring at her reflection like she was meeting a slightly braver version of herself.

Aeris knocked once before pushing the door open.

"Ready, superstar?" he grinned.

"It's just the second day," she said, adjusting her bag strap.

"That's when legends begin."

She rolled her eyes, but a tiny smile followed her downstairs.

Breakfast was quieter than yesterday. Their father had already left for work, and their mother packed their lunches carefully, reminding Aeris twice not to forget his notebook.

"I never forget," he said confidently.

Yuni raised an eyebrow. "You forgot it yesterday."

"That was a strategic accident."

The school gates no longer felt like a wall.

They walked together through the courtyard, Aeris swinging his bag lazily over one shoulder.

"You're not stopping at the door today, right?" he teased.

"I wasn't planning to," she replied.

"Good. Because I already told my friends my sister is secretly a genius."

She stopped. "You did not."

"I absolutely did."

They laughed, and then separated at the hallway like always.

This time, Yuni entered her classroom without hesitation.

A few students looked up and nodded in recognition. The girl with messy hair from yesterday waved lightly.

"Morning," she whispered.

"Morning," Yuni replied, surprised at how natural it felt.

Math class began after two periods.

The teacher wrote a long equation across the board numbers and symbols stretching almost from one side to the other.

"Who wants to try solving this?" she asked.

The room went quiet.

Yuni stared at the board, thoughts moving quickly. The steps formed clearly in her mind. Before fear could stop her, she raised her hand.

A few students turned, whispering softly.

"You may come," the teacher said.

The chalk felt slightly cold between her fingers.

Step by step, she worked through the problem, writing carefully. The classroom stayed unusually silent only the faint hum of the fan above them.

When she finished, she stepped back.

The teacher checked each line… then turned toward the class with a small smile.

"Perfect solution."

A few students gasped softly.

"No way…"

"She solved that already?"

Yuni walked back to her seat, heart racing. She tried to focus on her notebook, but she could feel eyes on her not judging, just curious.

After class ended, a boy from the front row approached her desk, holding his notebook nervously.

"Um… Yuni?"

She looked up.

"Yeah?"

"Can you… maybe help me with this part?" he asked, pointing to a question. "I didn't understand what the teacher explained."

She hesitated for a second then nodded.

"Sure."

He pulled a chair closer. "I'm really bad at math," he admitted.

"You're not bad," she said gently. "Maybe you just need a different way to see it."

She explained slowly, sketching small steps in the margin of his notebook.

"Oh," he said, eyes lighting up. "That actually makes sense now."

"See?" she smiled.

"Thanks… you're really good at this."

It wasn't a loud moment. No dramatic applause.

Just a quiet shift the feeling of belonging growing one conversation at a time.

🍃 After School Aeris Waiting

The final bell rang, and Yuni packed her bag slowly, thinking about how much had changed in just one day.

Outside, Aeris leaned against a pillar, pretending to scroll through something but clearly watching the hallway.

"There she is," he said when she approached. "How many records did you break today?"

She laughed softly. "I solved a math question."

His eyes widened. "Already? I knew it."

"And someone asked me for help after class."

He placed a hand dramatically over his heart. "My little sister is becoming a legend."

"Stop," she said, bumping his shoulder.

"What about your day?" she asked.

He groaned. "My class is chaos. One guy forgot which classroom was ours and just followed me around all day."

"That sounds like you," she teased.

"Excuse me, I am a responsible role model."

They walked side by side, the afternoon sun warm on their backs.

Dinner felt calmer tonight.

Their father sat across from them, listening quietly as they spoke.

"So," he said finally, "tell me honestly… how is the new school?"

Yuni thought for a moment.

"It's still new," she admitted. "But today wasn't scary."

She told him about the math problem, about helping a classmate.

"That's wonderful," he said warmly.

Aeris leaned forward. "And my class already knows I'm funny."

"Are you sure they're laughing with you?" their father teased.

"Unbelievable," Aeris gasped.

After a pause, their father asked softly, "Do you miss the village?"

The room grew quiet.

Yuni nodded slightly. "Sometimes. Especially the evenings."

Aeris added, "Yeah… but this place is starting to feel… okay."

Their mother smiled, relief softening her eyes.

"That's all we hoped for," she said.

The conversation shifted into jokes and stories, plates clinking softly, laughter filling the room like something warm and steady.

Night settled quietly across another world.

One girl began to find her voice… while across the sea, a boy's quiet words waited…

Junjeo sat near his bedroom window, knees pulled close, headphones resting over his ears. Outside, distant lights shimmered beneath a dark sky, cars passing slowly like moving stars.

Music played softly the kind that felt like it understood him without asking questions.

A notebook lay open across his lap.

He picked up a pen and began writing.

Not homework.

Not notes.

Lines that sounded like thoughts he never said aloud.

Time passed unnoticed.

Eventually, sleep found him there head resting against the wall, pen slipping from his fingers, music still whispering through his headphones.

His mother pushed the door open gently.

She paused when she saw him.

"You fell asleep again…" she murmured.

As she lifted the papers from his lap, her eyes caught the words written across them.

A poem.

Soft, emotional, filled with images of night skies and quiet feelings.

She read a few lines silently, surprise growing in her expression.

"He writes like this…?" she whispered.

Carefully, she removed his headphones and guided him to bed, tucking the blanket around him.

Later, she showed the paper to his father.

"He has a talent," she said quietly. "Not just for music… for words too."

His father studied the page thoughtfully, a small proud smile forming.

In his room, Junjeo slept peacefully unaware that someone had finally seen the part of him he kept hidden.
