Chapter 86 - The Monster is a Person

Previously on Hakuna: The Letebele Clan set out across the realm on a calculated diplomatic campaign, systematically stripping away the Lewotla Clan's regional support by forcing potential allies to pledge absolute neutrality. With the enemy isolated and the theater of battle drawn, a quiet, heavy rest period settles over the land before the decisive conflict begins...

Act I: The Quiet Before the Storm

The sun hung low over the horizon, painting the sky in pale shades of orange and dusk as Hakuna walked through the immaculate, polished hallways of the DDF Headquarters. The heavy thud of his boots echoed against the walls, breaking the calm of the quiet wing.

He made his way toward the chief research office to meet Enzo.

Inside, paper scrolls and digital interfaces were scattered across a massive obsidian desk. Enzo stood near a glowing holographic terminal, his sharp eyes flicking up as the door slid open.

Enzo crossed his arms, letting out a soft breath as he looked at his friend. "I see... so you won't be available until then..."

Hakuna leaned against the doorframe, his hands resting casually in his pockets as he replied, "Yeah, my clan is going to war... again..."

Enzo paused, his perceptive gaze locking onto the subtle, rigid shift in Hakuna's jawline and the heavy shadow across his eyes.

"You're making that face again..." Enzo noted quietly.

Hakuna blinked, caught off guard. "Huh?"

Enzo hesitated, a flicker of reluctance crossing his expression as if he were treading lightly around a old, unhealed wound—unwilling to force them both to relive a dark chapter from their past.

"After... yeah, during the Tribal War," Enzo said softly, choosing his words with care. "I know that you were moving like a weapon back then. It was during that brutal conflict where you received your moniker..."

Hakuna turned his head away, his dark eyes focusing out the high window of Enzo's office. Beyond the glass, the vast grounds stretched into the distance, but in his mind, vivid, bloody memories from that dark year of the Tribal War flashed in rapid succession—the smell of burning iron, the weight of total destruction, and the terrified eyes of those who watched him fight.

"The Monster?" Hakuna responded, his voice low and distant. "Yeah... it was... eventful..."

Enzo watched him closely, seeing the lingering strain behind the young warrior's quiet posture. "Are you going to be okay, Hakuna?"

Hakuna snapped out of his trance, shaking his head slightly to clear the ghosts of the past before looking back at Enzo.

"Yeah... I'll be fine," Hakuna assured him, his tone returning to its steady, practical baseline. "I'm just thinking about the coming fights... who will be first, Arkhagos or Flamboyage..."

Enzo offered a firm nod, leaning back against his desk. "Don't worry about that. Our job is to be ready, regardless of who comes first... even if they decide to attack simultaneously..."

Simultaneously?! The author would be absolute-level diabolical for that, sheesh...

Hakuna, zoning out slightly as he processed the sheer nightmare scenario of a dual strike, nodded slowly. "Yeah, you're right... Uhh... you said you found something about Theosis..."

Enzo's eyes lit up with intellectual intensity. "Yes..."

He turned to his central monitor, tapping a series of commands to bring up ancient, translated texts scrolling beside high-resolution scans of weathered manuscripts.

"Theosis wasn't really its original name before," Enzo explained, zooming in on a series of historical passages. "But I did manage to uncover something remarkable..."

Hakuna interjected, stepping closer to the screen, his eyebrows knitted together in curiosity. "Wait... what was the name before...?"

Enzo turned back to face him, his voice steady and solemn. "It was never formally named by modern scholars... because it's in the Bible."

Say what now?!

"Say what now?" Hakuna said, his jaw dropping slightly.

Inside his mindscape, Psycha echoed the exact same sentiment with equal shock: "Say what now?!"

Enzo pressed forward, pointing to specific historical cross-references on the glowing terminal.

"Moses, Solomon, David, Peter, Jacob, and even Jesus... they all performed incredible feats that seemed entirely impossible by human standards, all through the supreme power of God. The actual source behind what we call Theosis—Yahweh—he gave them those extraordinary abilities, just like us..."

Hakuna stared at the ancient lettering on the screen, pondering the sheer weight of the concept. "Gifts from God...?"

"Exactly," Enzo affirmed, scrolling down to an ancient Latin commentary. "But there was a specific phrase given to these phenomena—not found in standard ancient texts, but recorded in the accounts from those who spectated these divine events..."

Hakuna leaned in, his interest completely piqued. "What was it?"

Enzo read the translated parchment aloud, his tone reverent:

"Ad imaginem Dei factus..."

Hakuna repeated the phrase softly under his breath, letting the ancient words linger in the quiet office. "I see..."

Act II: Divine Legacy

Minutes later, the two young men stepped out of the facility, walking side by side across the outer stone grounds of the DDF complex. The cool mountain air brushed against their faces as they discussed their next moves.

Hakuna looked up at the open sky, his expression turning serious.

"I'll be training relentlessly to unlock the true form of my Talent while the war goes on," Hakuna stated, his hands clasped behind his back. "But don't stop finding more info, Enzo. I think the Umbra all mastered their Talents somehow... but we won't do it that way. We'll forge our own path."

Enzo smiled faintly, placing a supportive hand on his comrade's shoulder. "Alright. The others already know about what I found in the archives, and we will all be strong enough soon."

Hakuna gave a crisp nod, pushed off the ground, and launched himself into the heavens, shooting across the clouds like a streak of dark light as he headed straight back toward his ancestral domain.

Act III: The Prince and the Shadow

Moments later, Hakuna descended from the sky, landing silently upon the high stone roof of the Letebele Palace. The gentle breeze rustled his clothing as he took a moment to observe his home.

Without a sound, a lone figure stepped out from the deep shadows behind the roof's stone chimney, his footfalls completely silent against the tiles.

"Well, you've certainly grown..." the man spoke smoothly.

Hakuna whirled around, his eyes widening in complete shock as he recognized the voice and stature of the man standing before him.

"Uyanda...?" Hakuna muttered, stunned.

A warm, familiar grin spread across the man's face. "Hey, Young Uncle..."

A short while later, the two were seen walking together through the grand, sunlit inner corridors of the Letebele Palace. The quiet majesty of the halls provided a peaceful backdrop as the long-separated relatives reconnected.

Hakuna glanced over at his older nephew, genuine curiosity in his voice. "How have you been all this time?"

Uyanda folded his arms behind his head, letting out a relaxed, contented sigh. "Since denouncing my royalty, life has been much easier. There's much less pressure from constant expectation, political maneuvering, and clan duties."

Hakuna let out a dry, weary chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah... seems pretty much the exact opposite for me... eh..."

Before Uyanda could answer, the sharp pitter-patter of tiny feet echoed down the marble hallway.

A small child—a little girl with bright, energetic eyes—came sprinting around the corner, squealing with delight as she threw herself directly into Uyanda's open arms. Uyanda scooped her up effortlessly, swinging her into the air with a laugh.

Hakuna stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes wide as he stared in utter, silent confusion. "Uhh..."

Uyanda beamed with pride, holding the little girl securely against his shoulder as he looked at his younger uncle. "Oh yeah... this is my daughter."

Hakuna stared at the child, a sudden, heavy lump forming in his throat. His voice softened, carrying an unmistakable, deep tone of quiet yearning.

"You... have a daughter..."

Right on cue, a graceful young woman rounded the hallway corner, catching her breath as she jogged toward them.

"There you are!" she called out with a warm smile, chasing after the little girl. "I told you not to run ahead!"

Uyanda turned toward her, his expression filled with gentle affection. "And this is my fiancé, Clarisse..."

Hakuna stood completely frozen, his dark eyes locked onto the sight of the happy family standing before him. A intense wave of unspoken longing washed over his soul as he looked at everything he had ever sought for himself—the quiet peace, the warmth of a loving home, the life he could have built... and essentially, the future he had lost.

Uyanda caught Hakuna's intense gaze and let out a cheeky, teasing laugh, misinterpreting his uncle's stunned silence.

"Hey now!" Uyanda playfully reprimanded, stepping slightly in front of his partner with a smirk. "She is my fiancé! I know she's beautiful, though..."

Hakuna snapped out of his trance, his cheeks immediately flushing bright red as he stumbled over his words in flustered panic. "N-No! It's not like that at all!"

Clarisse laughed softly, stepping forward with a polite, respectful bow. "You must be the Young Uncle. It's a true honor to meet you, Prince Hakuna..."

Hakuna held up his hands, instinctively trying to correct the title. "Oh... I'm not... a prince anymore..."

Clarisse offered a gentle smile, reaching out to take the energetic toddler from Uyanda's arms. "I'll have to take her from you now, babe. It's time for her nap."

Uyanda kissed his daughter's forehead before nodding to Clarisse. "Alright, see you guys soon..."

Clarisse gave Hakuna one last warm nod before turning back down the hallway, her light footsteps fading into the distance.

Act IV: More Than a Weapon

As soon as the hallway fell quiet again, the flustered expression vanished completely from Hakuna's face. His posture straightened, his brow furrowing into a stern, intense, and deadly serious visage.

"Uyanda..." Hakuna spoke, his voice dropping an octave.

Uyanda blinked, caught off guard by the sudden, chilling shift in atmosphere. "Huh?"

Hakuna stepped closer, looking his nephew dead in the eye with a desperate, uncompromising gravity.

"Protect them at all costs. Do you understand me?"

Uyanda hesitated, taken aback by the overwhelming weight behind Hakuna's words. "Uh... y-yeah..."

Hakuna didn't break eye contact, his chest heaving slightly as he poured his heart out. "I know I will no longer find someone like you have again... I know that life is closed to me now. But I implore you... keep them safe. Whatever it takes."

Uyanda looked at Hakuna, seeing past the incredible power, past the legendary titles, and straight into the tired, wounded soul of the young man standing in front of him.

Uyanda's expression softened, filled with deep empathy and ancient brotherly understanding.

"Hakuna... remember what I told you when you first denounced your royalty?" Uyanda asked quietly.

Hakuna tilted his head, his brow knitting together in confusion. "Huh?"

Uyanda took a step forward, placing a solid, firm hand squarely on Hakuna's shoulder.

"I denounced my royalty because I simply didn't want to be forced to marry a Royal Entity," Uyanda explained, his voice ringing with absolute clarity. "But you... you were born and meant to lead this clan..."

Hakuna shook his head, looking down at the marble floor as he argued back softly, "I'm no leader..."

"Hakuna," Uyanda interrupted firmly, his grip on Hakuna's shoulder tightening. "You have lost so much. You have faced death itself and lived to tell the tale more times than anyone ever should. And yet, through all the blood and grief, you still keep your head held high and you LEAD. I told you to remember that..."

Uyanda paused, leaning in closer so his words burned directly into Hakuna's memory.

"...But most of all, I told you to remember that you are no weapon. You are not 'The Monster'. You're Hakuna..."

Hakuna stood in absolute, dead silence.

The heavy words echoed in the quiet hall, washing away the ghosts of the Tribal War, the fear of the Motaung King, and the overwhelming weight of being Letebele's ultimate avatar of war.

For the first time in a long time, he was reminded of how his true friends and family saw him—not as a dangerous weapon that must never fall into the wrong hands, not as a terrifying monster that whole clans pray never to face on the battlefield...

...but as Hakuna.

A Person.
