Cherreads

Chapter 63 - Chapter 63: Aftermath

Mysterious, solemn, and carrying a divine presence.

Even though it was clearly not human, there was still something strangely beautiful about it—almost... cool.

Truly, what a magnificent face.

Those oval eyes that seemed to see through all evil, the smooth lines of its massive gray body, the fin-like crest atop its head, and the timeless timer set in the center of its chest.

Who was it?

While the adults were still stunned, the children were already cheering.

"Whoa! It's Ultraman Tiga! I've seen him on TV!"

"Does this mean I can turn into light too!?"

"Tiga, we love you!"

The children's excitement immediately drew the adults' attention. They started asking—

"Who's Tiga?"

The kids eagerly tried their best to explain. Some even tried to run past the police barrier to get closer, wanting to touch the statue.

Luckily, the officers reacted quickly and stopped them.

This was definitely not a place children should be wandering into—not after what just happened here.

The officers listened to what the children said, their expressions increasingly confused. The kids' explanations felt like they were straight-up insulting their intelligence.

A monster appeared tonight, and Ultraman defeated it to save the town?

Was that really something a normal person would conclude?

Impossible—absolutely impossible.

So what had actually happened here? Who orchestrated all of this? Who killed the police and the townspeople? And who built this three-meter-tall stone statue in the middle of the lake?

There was no doubt—something deeper was going on.

"Officer Hank! We found Sheriff Gareth hanging in a tree—he's still alive, just unconscious from blood loss!"

"And the people who called the police are also here—we can start by hearing their statements."

Soon, Paula, Maria, and Amy—the survivors who hadn't been injured—were brought in to recount what happened that night.

Ten minutes later—

Deputy Hank was shaken. He started wondering if the survivors were high on narcotics or maybe collectively hypnotized.

How else could they explain something so insane?

An unkillable masked slasher, a bootleg Spider-Man and Venom duo, Pyramid Head swinging a giant blade, and then Ultraman flying in and blasting light beams!?

What kind of normal world had things like that!?

Even a crossover movie wouldn't dare go that far—the worldbuilding wouldn't make any sense!

Adults are crafty—none of what they say can be trusted.

So Hank turned to the kids.

"Kids, tell Uncle Hank—Ultraman Tiga wasn't real, right? He didn't actually come here, did he?"

The children nodded hard. Hank's eyes lit up.

But then the kids continued—

"Nope! It wasn't Tiga. It was Tiga's big brother—Ultraman Agul!"

Hank held his expression together with sheer will and continued questioning. Strangely, the kids' details matched the adults' almost perfectly.

Two or three people can rehearse a lie. But getting a whole group of kids to coordinate the same detailed story? That was far harder.

Then another officer approached:

"Deputy Hank, we also found Officer Papas. He's injured, but conscious."

"Bring him here."

Papas was escorted over and explained what he saw with his own eyes.

Right after the explosion, he was knocked out. When he woke up, he saw a giant gray Ultraman rising out of the flames.

And because he was a longtime tokusatsu fan, he even took photos—planning to save them as family heirlooms someday.

Photos don't lie.

Hank looked through the images on the phone—grainy as if shot through a potato—but undeniably real.

And one shot, taken from the side, was surprisingly good—perfect lighting, composition, and framing.

This guy's aim with a gun may be awful, but his photography was unexpectedly impressive.

"Papas, send me a copy later. I'll need to analyze it."

And yet, instead of clearing up the situation, Hank only had more questions.

If Sheriff Gareth woke up and said the same thing…

Then they might have no choice but to believe it.

"Clear the civilians out. We're securing the scene."

Hank took one last look at the stone statue standing silently in the lake—fists clenched, standing tall and unyielding, staring into the distance.

Just the posture alone broadcast strength.

Even though it was only stone, it felt like it might come alive at any moment.

Hank remembered what his parents told him about the Crystal Lake murders from long ago.

If all of that—and what happened tonight—were both real…

Then what does the world really look like?

He could only hope the future of this town wouldn't grow darker from here.

…

It blew up—completely blew up.

After so many years, the Crystal Lake Killer had returned! A young counselor murdered again!

Was this the corruption of human nature, or the collapse of moral boundaries?

A mysterious hero appeared in the wilderness! Local police fought bravely!

A giant of light broke through fiction and entered reality!

Is this the result of a new hallucinogenic drug? Or some advanced black-market technology not yet known to the public!?

The incident spread rapidly, and the town became the center of national attention.

Even within the town itself, talk of that night refused to die down.

For years, the Legend of Crystal Lake had haunted the hearts of the locals.

Now—was the nightmare finally gone?

People who heard the explosions, saw the blinding light, and touched the aftermath of violent combat could not suppress their curiosity.

They gathered at the still-clear waters of Crystal Lake.

They stared at the giant statue.

Awe. Doubt. Fear. Respect. Gratitude.

All mixed together.

Someone couldn't resist and dove into the ice-cold lake.

Those onshore held their breath, waiting anxiously—but also with anticipation.

After two minutes, the diver resurfaced.

"I saw it. I saw him."

"What did you see?"

"There's a corpse at the bottom. He's bald, and his face is twisted and ugly—but he's huge."

Everyone inhaled sharply.

Someone asked, voice trembling:

"Was it… Jason?"

The diver nodded. "It was him. But that's not all. You guys won't believe what else I saw."

"What did you see!?"

"A heart. A huge heart. I swear—I saw it spasm. It moved. It beat. I swear that wasn't my imagination."
