Hinata followed quietly beside Raven as they wove through the shadowed alleys and lantern-lit lanes of the Uchiha district. Crimson clan banners fluttered from the rooftops, and the air smelled faintly of old incense and sakura bark. When they reached the gates of the training grounds, a row of stern-faced Uchiha women stood outside in long black coats stitched with red clouds and the clan's fan crest. One stepped forward.
"Name," the guard said, arms folded.
Raven scratched her head lightly, unfazed. "Raven Kamazaki. I'm here with Hinata Hyūga."
"Go and report it to the Mistress," said the second guard.
"Right." The first guard turned briskly and vanished behind the gate. A few minutes passed in silence before she returned, bowing slightly.
"Lady Mikoto will see you now."
Raven raised an eyebrow as she stepped forward. "The security here is really tight for Mikoto."
"Lady Mikoto has given the women of the Uchiha clan prestige and honor," the second guard said proudly. "We were once oppressed by our male counterparts, but no longer. She is both our patron and our true leader—our matriarch. We will accept no disrespect toward's her."
Hinata tilted her head. "Raven, what's a matriarch?"
"The female leader of an entire clan, it sounds like," Raven replied with a faint smile.
"I don't really understand, but it sounds important."
Raven glanced at the fox beside her. "What do you think Yumi?"
"It looks like things have changed quite a bit in the Uchiha compound," Yumi said, her white tails twitching. "Mikoto's been up to more than we ever suspected."
"Right," Raven murmured.
The guards stood stiffly, ignoring their chatter, posture sharp and reverent. Raven nodded to Hinata and Yumi. "All right. Come on, Hinata, Yumi—let's go."
They stepped through the heavy gate and entered the inner training grounds.
Inside, cherry trees lined the walls, their petals falling in slow spirals onto packed earth and carved wood posts. Rows of kunoichi trained in formation—throwing shuriken, executing silent takedowns on dummies, and weaving chakra threads between their fingers like silk.
An older woman walking beside them gestured forward. "These are the exclusive training grounds of the women of the Uchiha clan—daughters, wives, grandmothers, all of us. Lady Mikoto secured this area for our exclusive use after days of arguments with her husband, Fugaku Uchiha. He dares to bend the knee to Konoha's leadership. He has sold us all out."
"Sounds like the Uchiha have a lot of anger toward the leaders of this village," Raven said, eyes scanning the forms of the women training in perfect silence.
"Of course we do!" the woman said sharply. "They've systematically eliminated our finest women and men through the Shinobi Wars. Lady Mikoto noticed this and now fights tirelessly to change it—ensuring we're represented on the village council and within Konoha itself."
"So she's not just leading the clan—she's involved in politics, too," Raven noted.
"How could she not be?" the woman replied.
She stopped in front of a sliding wooden gate, bowing politely. "Lady Mikoto awaits you inside."
Raven gave a small nod and stepped forward. Hinata followed close behind, and Yumi walked softly at their heels, tails gliding across the stones as they entered.
Inside the open arena, the air buzzed with chakra as sparring echoed off the walls. At the center, Mikoto Uchiha stood with her hands behind her back, observing Naruto Uzumaki struggle through a botched jutsu sequence.
"Naruto, you must learn to channel your chakra correctly while performing the animal hand seals. Each one is essential for executing your jutsu properly."
Naruto scratched the back of his head. "But what are hand signs, exactly? I keep mixing them up!"
Mikoto sighed softly and looked up as Raven, Hinata, and Yumi approached. "Ah, Raven, Hinata—you're here. Welcome. And I see you brought your little fox companion again."
She gestured toward's Naruto without missing a beat. "Raven, would you care to explain to Naruto what the basic hand signs for ninjutsu are?"
Raven sighed, but the edge of her voice held warmth. "Naruto, you seriously don't know this? Fine, let me explain."
She stood in front of him on the smooth dirt, forming hand signs slowly and clearly.
"These are the foundational hand techniques used to channel chakra—Ram, Snake, Tiger, Boar, Dog, and a few others. Each represents a distinct chakra pattern, helping us mold and release energy. Every jutsu in Konoha begins with these seals."
Naruto stared closely at her fingers, brow furrowed in concentration.
"We use these hand signs to guide our chakra flow—to control it, contain it, and then execute our techniques," Raven said.
"Excellent job Raven," Mikoto said, her voice approving but measured.
