Chapter 383 - Chapter 383

The 3-Star Fortress was gone.

Noctis stood amid the broken terrain where its central structures had once risen, but the battlefield no longer resembled a stronghold in any meaningful way. The final stages of the battle had torn through walls, towers, underground halls, defensive formations, and the surrounding land until little remained above ground level. Broad fractures crossed fused stone in every direction, some still carrying faint traces of Aurelion's holy power while darker residue lingered where Malgoryth's attacks had struck deeply enough to scar the earth.

The quiet was almost unfamiliar after the sustained violence of the previous hours. Wind moved freely across ground where buildings had once interrupted it, lifting thin streams of dust from shattered stone and carrying them over depressions left by impacts large enough to swallow entire sections of the former fortress. Noctis could still sense remnants of divine and demonic power below the surface, but neither possessed enough coherence to matter anymore.

His own body had already settled.

The violent pressure caused by absorbing both god-cores at once had disappeared, and the new circulation throughout him no longer required constant attention. All 108 major meridian points remained open beneath his awareness while the finer channels branching through his body carried energy without obstruction, functioning with an ease that felt almost disproportionate to how recently they had formed.

Noctis had no reason to test them again tonight. The first complete circulation had already released enough excess pressure to drive a crimson pillar high into the sky, and the few movements he attempted afterward proved that familiar actions could now produce far more force than expected. Oblivion Rend answering a bare-handed motion had been more than enough warning that continued experimentation could wait until he had somewhere less fragile to do it.

The difference extended beyond the meridian network. His Genesis Core remained the central authority within him, but the relationship between his body and the powers gathered throughout his evolution had changed so thoroughly that the old distinction between vessel and power had become difficult to identify. Blood, abyssal force, divine power, demonic power, and the other inheritances integrated into him no longer felt like separate burdens his body was responsible for containing.

They simply belonged to him.

Noctis flexed one hand and watched the Genesis Regalia respond with the motion. Deep crimson protection followed the shape of his forearm over a fitted black underlayer, while white-gold lines and darker purple-black undertones remained woven through the structure without competing against the crimson that dominated the whole design. It had formed during his reconstruction rather than being forged afterward, yet it moved with him more naturally than conventional armor ever had.

He lowered his hand and looked across the battlefield once more.

Nothing remained here that he needed.

The Bloodfang Reapers had already returned after the fighting ended. His clone had completed its final task and secured the blood Malgoryth spilled before disappearing, and the two god-cores had been absorbed completely. More importantly, everyone who had occupied the 3-Star Fortress had escaped before Annihilation Trinity erased the stronghold and the surrounding region.

The fortress itself could be replaced.

The people inside it could not.

That distinction mattered more than any structure.

Noctis could still place portions of the old fortress from memory even though almost every physical marker had disappeared. The main hall had stood somewhere beyond a broad depression where the ground had been crushed inward, while the residential sections had occupied what was now a broken slope of darkened stone. One of the courtyards where the fallen angels often gathered had been somewhere farther east, beneath a region where the earth had split into overlapping fractures.

He had not expected the stronghold to become important when he first captured it. It had simply been another position taken from an enemy, useful because of where it stood and what it allowed him to control. Over time, people had occupied the rooms, trained in the courtyards, argued in the halls, eaten together, returned from deployments, and gradually treated the place as something more permanent.

Rengar had claimed whatever space suited him.

Bahamut had somehow made even the larger chambers feel undersized.

The fallen angels and transformed clergy had established routines throughout the fortress while the Academy students moved through it often enough that some stopped behaving like temporary guests. Nocthyrael had eventually occupied enough of Noctis's own quarters that distinguishing between what belonged to him and what belonged to her became pointless.

Those things had made the fortress a home.

None of them required the building to survive.

Noctis turned away from the ruins and activated Genesis Step.

Distance folded beneath him without the need for a portal, receiving formation, or prepared destination. The movement had always ignored conventional travel, but after his reconstruction it carried none of the same internal resistance, the new channels throughout his body supporting the spatial transition with a smoothness he had not possessed before the god-cores changed him.

The devastated battlefield compressed behind him.

Another step carried him farther.

Then another.

By the time the final transition released him, intact walls had appeared beneath the night sky.

The captured 1-Star Fortress stood below him, smaller than the stronghold he had lost but untouched by the battle. Torches still burned along the battlements, guards moved between watch positions, and light escaped through windows facing the inner courtyards. Activity had slowed with the late hour, but the fortress remained awake enough that Noctis could sense people moving through multiple structures.

More importantly, familiar presences were everywhere.

Nocthyrael.

Rengar.

Bahamut.

The fallen angels.

The transformed clergy.

Shirayuki, Fuyumi, Lilithra, Gorath, and the other Academy students who had evacuated with them.

Everyone he expected to find was there.

A demon guard on the western wall noticed Noctis while he was still descending. The guard stared upward for half a breath before calling toward the nearest tower, and the announcement moved across the wall almost immediately. Another voice repeated it farther inside, then another from the courtyard below.

Noctis had returned.

The words spread through the fortress faster than he reached the ground.

Doors opened within the interior structures. Footsteps echoed across stone corridors and through archways leading toward the main courtyard. By the time Noctis lowered himself onto the stone, people were already emerging from several directions.

Nocthyrael reached him first.

She appeared beneath one of the inner archways at a run, her long silver-white hair moving behind her while the fitted lines of her elegant armored dress shifted around her legs. Marcus, Sophia, Elena, Adrian, Elias, Rengar, Bahamut, and several others followed from farther back, but Nocthyrael never looked at any of them once her eyes found Noctis standing in the courtyard.

She did not slow down.

Noctis barely had time to turn fully toward her before she reached him and threw both arms around his neck. Her momentum struck his chest hard enough to make him move one foot backward, and he immediately caught her around the waist while his other hand went behind her head.

Nocthyrael held him tightly.

For several breaths, she said nothing.

Her face remained buried beside his neck while her arms locked around him, and Noctis could feel the tension still running through her despite the strength of the embrace. She had survived the evacuation, remained physically unharmed, and known intellectually that Noctis was capable of surviving situations that should have killed almost anyone else, but none of those things had made waiting easier.

Noctis tightened his arm around her.

His hand moved through her hair.

Nocthyrael pressed closer.

Only after several long moments did she finally lift her head, and both of her hands moved immediately to his face. Her fingers touched his cheeks and jaw while she studied him from only inches away, as though seeing him standing upright was not enough and she needed physical confirmation that the person in front of her had truly returned.

Then she kissed him.

Noctis returned the kiss without hesitation.

One arm remained around her waist while his other hand settled behind her neck, keeping her close instead of simply allowing her to hold on by herself. Nocthyrael kissed him with the force of everything she had been unable to do while waiting in the 1-Star Fortress, and Noctis answered until some of the rigid tension beneath his hands began to soften.

When she eventually drew back, she did not move far.

Their foreheads nearly touched.

"You came back," Nocthyrael said quietly.

"I'm here."

Her eyes closed for a moment.

Then she kissed him again.

The second kiss was slower. Relief had begun replacing the urgency that drove her across the courtyard, and when it ended, she finally allowed her feet to settle fully beneath her without releasing him completely. One arm remained around his waist while her other hand rested against his chest.

Only then did she begin noticing what had changed.

Her fingers moved slightly over the unfamiliar protection covering him. The Genesis Regalia followed Noctis's body differently from the armor he had worn before, its deep crimson structure lying closer to him over the fitted black layer beneath it. White-gold accents crossed portions of the chest and shoulders while darker undertones remained deeper in the design, visible whenever the courtyard light struck the material from an angle.

Nocthyrael studied it briefly.

Then her attention shifted away from the armor.

Her expression changed.

"You feel different."

Noctis looked down at her. "I am."

Nocthyrael kept her hand against his chest while concentrating on the presence surrounding him. She knew the pressure of his bloodline well enough to recognize changes most people would miss, and she had stood beside him through enough battles to understand how his aura felt when restrained, released, irritated, injured, or ready to kill.

What surrounded him now did not match any of those familiar states.

The pressure was heavier than before, yet there was less strain within it. Divine power existed inside the aura, but it did not resemble the clean sanctity radiated by the Church or the oppressive holiness they had felt from Aurelion. Something unmistakably demonic existed beside it without resisting the divine aspect, and beneath both remained the same crimson resonance Nocthyrael associated with Noctis himself.

She did not ask what had happened.

Not while half the fortress was gathering around them.

Rengar noticed the difference in his own way.

He approached with Bahamut while Sophia, Elena, Marcus, Adrian, Elias, and the others closed the remaining distance. Rengar stopped a few steps from Noctis and drew in a long breath, his ears shifting as he separated unfamiliar scents from what he already knew.

His expression tightened for a moment.

Then he breathed in again.

"There's holy power in you now," Rengar said. "Demonic too. Both are stronger than anything I remember smelling before, but underneath all of it, your blood still smells the same."

"Because I'm still me."

That seemed to satisfy Rengar more than a technical explanation ever could. He stepped closer and offered his forearm, which Noctis gripped firmly before Rengar returned the hold and moved aside.

Bahamut watched the exchange before giving Noctis his full attention. The dragon lacked Rengar's sense of smell, but he possessed enough experience around powerful beings to recognize the difference between strength being suppressed by a body and strength that had become natural to it.

"Your aura has changed," Bahamut said. "Before, there was always some difference between the pressure inside you and the body controlling it. I can't feel that separation anymore."

Noctis considered the description. "That's close."

Sophia had moved near enough to hear them. The fallen angel watched Noctis with more concentration than most of the others, her attention lingering on the divine portion of his new presence.

"There's sanctity in your aura," she said, "but it doesn't feel anything like the Church."

Elena stood beside her and nodded. "It isn't pressing against the rest of your power either. It feels like it belongs there."

"Because it's mine now," Noctis said.

The answer produced several quiet looks among the fallen angels.

Adrian and Elias had their own reasons to understand what Sophia and Elena meant. Both had spent too long within the Church before their transformation to mistake ordinary magical radiance for sanctity, and Elias's expression tightened briefly when old instincts recognized what surrounded Noctis.

Adrian watched Noctis for several seconds before speaking. "The sanctity is not sitting around your aura or being forced through it. It is actually part of you."

Noctis gave him a small nod.

That was enough.

Neither Adrian nor Elias pressed further.

The Academy students had gathered farther back.

Shirayuki stood slightly ahead of the others, her Kitsune ears angled forward while she watched Noctis with the same quiet intelligence she had shown throughout their time at the Academy. Fuyumi remained composed beside her, though the Yuki-Onna's gaze stayed fixed on him with unusual intensity. Lilithra had made little effort to conceal her surprise, while Gorath looked openly confused by how different Noctis felt compared with the man who had left the fortress earlier.

Noctis could already see the questions forming.

He decided to answer the ones that mattered before anyone began asking them individually.

"Everyone made it here safely," he said. "That was the important part."

The scattered conversation around the courtyard quieted.

Nocthyrael remained close against his side while Noctis looked over the gathered group. He had no intention of explaining the Royal Demon King's message, the exact sequence of Malgoryth's betrayal, the nature of the god-cores, the reconstruction of his body, or anything connected to systems he had deliberately kept private.

They needed to know the result.

They did not need every mechanism.

"After you evacuated, Aurelion and Malgoryth continued fighting," Noctis said. "Both were already badly damaged, but neither was willing to withdraw. Malgoryth eventually learned enough about me to decide I had become a problem and turned on me. Aurelion was already trying to kill me, so before long I was fighting both of them."

Gorath frowned deeply. "He fought beside you and then attacked you?"

"He changed his priorities."

Lilithra looked at Gorath. "That sounds better than saying he made the worst decision of his life."

Gorath glanced back toward Noctis. "I assume it ended badly."

Noctis looked across the gathered faces.

"Both gods are dead. I killed them."

The courtyard became silent.

This time nobody hurried to fill it.

Marcus's expression changed first. The fallen angel had fought beside Noctis often enough to understand the difference between surviving an overwhelmingly powerful enemy and killing one. The fact that there had been two such enemies only deepened the weight behind Noctis's statement.

Sophia's wings shifted faintly behind her.

Elena stared at Noctis without speaking.

Adrian remained composed, though his expression became more serious, while Elias lowered his gaze briefly as the meaning settled over him. Aurelion had not been driven away or forced to retreat. A god associated with the authority they once served had died in battle against the man they now called Master.

The Academy students reacted less quietly.

Gorath stared openly.

Lilithra's eyes widened before she glanced toward Shirayuki.

Fuyumi remained still, though the calmness in her expression had become much more deliberate.

Shirayuki recovered first. "We felt the pressure disappear from here. Everything became quiet so suddenly that none of us knew what had happened."

Fuyumi nodded. "We thought one of them had won."

"By then, both were already dead," Noctis said.

Gorath exhaled slowly. "Both."

Lilithra looked toward him. "You heard him."

"I'm repeating it because it still sounds ridiculous."

Shirayuki folded her arms. "Most things involving Noctis sound ridiculous if you repeat them after the fact."

Lilithra glanced at her. "That might be the first sensible thing you've said tonight."

"The first?"

Fuyumi ignored both of them.

Her attention remained on Noctis. "Whatever happened after that changed you."

Noctis gave a small nod.

Fuyumi accepted the answer without trying to pull more from him.

Nocthyrael had listened quietly throughout the exchange, but her hand tightened around Noctis's when the questions began moving away from whether he survived and toward what exactly happened inside him. She had spent enough of the night waiting while other things demanded his attention.

"Anything else they need to know tonight?" she asked.

Noctis looked down at her.

"No."

"Good."

She took his hand more firmly and turned toward the interior of the fortress.

Shirayuki looked as though another question had already formed.

Nocthyrael caught the expression.

"Tomorrow."

Shirayuki smiled slightly. "I didn't ask anything."

"You were going to."

"I was thinking about it."

"That counts."

A few of the fallen angels smiled, and even Rengar's expression loosened slightly. The irritation in Nocthyrael's voice was normal enough that it reassured them in a way another declaration of safety probably would not have.

She began leading Noctis toward the interior passage.

He went willingly.

Before entering the archway, Noctis looked back toward the gathering. "Get some rest."

Marcus lowered his head. "Yes, Master."

Adrian did the same.

Noctis and Nocthyrael disappeared into the fortress together.

The courtyard remained occupied after they left.

For several moments, nobody seemed ready to move. They had spent too long wondering whether Noctis would return at all, and now that he had, the answer had introduced an entirely new collection of questions.

Gorath was the first to break the silence.

"He killed two gods."

Lilithra looked at him. "You really are going to keep saying that."

"I'm trying to make it sound reasonable."

"That isn't going to work."

Shirayuki remained watching the passage. "We watched him defeat most of our class by himself without allowing us to interfere, and before that he spent half the Crucible pretending he had the same limitations the rest of us did. Trying to make anything about him sound reasonable stopped being useful a long time ago."

Fuyumi gave her a quiet look. "You suspected he was hiding more than the rest of us."

"I suspected he was hiding something."

Lilithra smiled. "You still do."

"Obviously."

Gorath looked between the two women. "Does knowing that help?"

"No," Shirayuki admitted. "But I enjoy being correct."

Several of the fallen angels nearby smiled.

Sophia had remained near Elena and Hannah, her attention still partly on the passage rather than the Academy students. "What interests me more is the divine part of his aura. I've felt Master use holy power before, but that was different."

Elena nodded. "Before, you could still tell where one influence ended and another began."

Adrian heard them and moved slightly closer. "What returned with him was integrated differently. The sanctity was not layered over his blood or contained separately. Elias and I both felt it."

Elias gave a small nod. "Holy power used to have a direction when I sensed it. You could tell what it served and where its authority came from. What Master carries now feels aligned to him before anything else."

Kael, standing nearby with Lucian and Rowan, looked toward Elias. "We have spent a long time watching Master make incompatible things work together. Maybe we should stop being surprised."

Lucian laughed quietly. "That would require us to learn."

"I'm trying."

"Not very hard."

The exchange drew a few subdued laughs from the surrounding clergy.

Marcus listened for a moment before looking toward Bahamut. "What do you think happened?"

Bahamut had remained near the edge of the courtyard while everyone else tried to classify what they had sensed. He did not answer immediately, and when he did, his voice remained calm.

"I think you can spend the rest of the night guessing and still be wrong. Master returned alive, his presence has changed, and whatever happened during that battle was significant enough for everyone here to notice it. If he wants us to understand the details, he will explain them when he decides they matter."

Marcus nodded slowly.

That was enough for him.

Bahamut looked across the others. "Whatever else changed, he is still our Master. His appearance, aura, and strength do not change that."

The fallen angels accepted the statement immediately.

Adrian and the transformed clergy did the same.

For Shirayuki, Fuyumi, Lilithra, and Gorath, the relationship was different. They were companions from the Demon Academy rather than sworn followers, yet even they understood the point.

Noctis had not returned demanding anyone acknowledge what he had become.

He had allowed Nocthyrael to run into him hard enough to move him backward.

He had greeted Rengar and Bahamut as he always did.

He had answered the important questions without turning the courtyard into an audience chamber.

Then he had let Nocthyrael take him away.

Lilithra smiled as the thought occurred to her. "He certainly hasn't changed in every way."

Fuyumi looked toward her. "What does that mean?"

Lilithra nodded toward the passage. "Nocthyrael still decides where he goes when she has waited long enough."

Shirayuki's mouth curved slightly. "He could have refused."

"That is why it is funny."

Gorath frowned as though the distinction remained unclear.

The fallen angels had already shifted to something less serious.

Eva looked toward Sophia. "The armor is new too."

Sophia nodded. "Completely."

"It suits him," Elena said.

Hannah smiled. "He looked good."

Claire glanced toward her before looking away again.

Hannah noticed.

So did Lily.

Marcus heard enough of the conversation to become suspicious of where it was going. "Are we discussing his armor or his face now?"

Eva looked toward him without embarrassment. "Both."

Daniel laughed from beside Marcus.

Marcus exhaled. "I shouldn't have asked."

"No," Daniel agreed. "You really shouldn't have."

The conversation loosened around them.

For the first time since the evacuation, the gathering sounded more like the people who had occupied the old fortress together rather than survivors waiting to discover whether someone had died. Several of the transformed clergy began drifting toward their assigned quarters, though Adrian and Elias remained nearby while the Academy students continued talking.

Bahamut allowed the group a few more minutes before stepping away from the wall.

"That is enough for tonight. Everyone should rest and be ready tomorrow."

Gorath looked toward him. "Tomorrow?"

"Yes."

"Why tomorrow?"

Bahamut regarded him patiently. "Because tonight is nearly over."

"That isn't what I meant." Gorath gestured toward the interior passage. "Noctis just came back after killing two gods. We still have questions. Why are we waiting until tomorrow?"

Rengar slowly looked toward Bahamut.

Bahamut returned the look.

Shirayuki noticed and immediately began smiling.

Lilithra saw Shirayuki's expression and understood almost as quickly.

Fuyumi looked between them before quietly turning her attention elsewhere.

Gorath noticed none of it.

Rengar finally looked back at him. "You're not old enough to know."

Gorath stared. "I'm old enough to fight in the Crucible."

"That isn't what he means," Lilithra said.

"Then what does he mean?"

Bahamut shook his head. "Go to sleep."

"That still doesn't explain anything."

Sophia laughed softly from where she stood with the other fallen angels. When Gorath looked toward her, she decided that nobody benefited from making him struggle any longer.

"They're going to be together all night."

Understanding spread across the Academy students at very different speeds.

Lilithra already knew.

Shirayuki's ears twitched once while her smile widened.

Fuyumi remained composed, though the slight turn of her face suggested she wanted no part in the discussion.

Gorath took longer.

He looked toward Sophia.

Then toward the passage.

Then back to Sophia.

"Oh."

Rengar nodded once.

Gorath rubbed the back of his neck. "You could have just said that."

"No," Rengar replied. "We really couldn't."

That earned a few laughs.

Claire did not join them.

The difference in her expression was small, but she had spent too long beside the other fallen angels for subtle changes to go unnoticed. Sophia caught it first, followed quickly by Elena and Hannah.

Eva followed their gaze.

Lily understood a moment later.

Claire realized all five women were looking at her.

"What?"

Sophia smiled. "Nothing."

"That is not a nothing look."

Elena glanced toward Hannah. "She noticed."

"I noticed."

Claire folded her arms. "Noticed what?"

Hannah answered before anyone could stretch the moment out unnecessarily. "You wanted to spend time with Master too."

"No."

The answer came much too quickly.

Sophia looked toward Elena.

Elena looked toward Eva.

Eva covered a smile with one hand.

Claire's face warmed. "I didn't mean anything like that."

Sophia laughed. "Nobody said you did."

"You were thinking it."

"Now I am."

Lily laughed quietly beside them.

Claire looked toward her. "You're not helping."

"I wasn't trying to."

Hannah stepped a little closer. "You were watching him the entire time."

"So was everyone."

"Yes," Elena said, "but most of us stopped after he left."

Claire opened her mouth, then stopped when no useful response appeared.

Sophia slipped one arm loosely around her shoulders.

Claire immediately tried to shrug it away.

Sophia kept pace when she moved.

"I only wanted to talk to him," Claire said.

"Then say that."

"I just did."

Sophia nodded with exaggerated seriousness. "You wanted his attention."

Claire frowned. "I wanted to know what happened to him."

"That too."

"There is no 'too.'"

Eva laughed again.

Claire gave her an irritated look. "You're all annoying."

Hannah smiled. "And you're jealous."

"I am not jealous."

The denial lacked enough conviction that even Claire seemed to hear the problem.

Sophia started guiding her toward the sleeping quarters before the conversation became another round of denials. Elena, Eva, Lily, and Hannah followed, their amusement obvious even when they were not adding anything.

Claire walked several steps before glancing once toward the passage through which Noctis had disappeared.

Sophia noticed.

She did not need to say anything.

Her smile was enough.

Claire caught it. "Don't."

Sophia laughed and kept walking.

Rengar watched the women disappear down the corridor before glancing toward Marcus.

Marcus immediately shook his head. "No."

"I didn't say anything."

"You were going to."

Daniel laughed again.

Adrian had already begun leading the transformed clergy away. Elias, Lucian, Kael, Rowan, Selene, and the others followed with considerably more restraint than the fallen angels, though several still looked thoughtful after everything they had sensed from Noctis.

Shirayuki remained beside Lilithra for another moment.

"Claire likes him."

Lilithra raised an eyebrow. "That surprised you?"

"No."

Fuyumi sighed quietly. "Are we done?"

Gorath looked toward them. "I hope so."

"We are now," Fuyumi said.

That finally ended the conversation.

Bahamut remained in the courtyard until the last groups began dispersing. Once he was satisfied that everyone intended to follow his instruction rather than spend the remaining hours of darkness speculating about Noctis, he turned toward another passage with Rengar.

The 1-Star Fortress gradually quieted.

Noctis and Nocthyrael were already far inside it.

She had kept hold of his hand from the courtyard onward, saying very little as they moved through the corridors. Whenever someone approached from the opposite direction, Nocthyrael shifted slightly closer to Noctis as though expecting another interruption, and each time the person stepped aside with a respectful greeting instead, her grip loosened again.

Noctis noticed.

He did not comment on it.

The master chamber assigned to them in the 1-Star Fortress was smaller than the private quarters they had occupied at the 3-Star Fortress, but neither of them cared. A large bed occupied the rear portion of the room while a low table and seating area stood nearer the entrance, and narrow windows along one wall allowed pale moonlight to reach across the stone floor.

Nocthyrael entered first.

Noctis followed.

The door closed behind them, and the latch had barely settled before Nocthyrael turned.

Whatever restraint she maintained while walking through the fortress disappeared immediately. She crossed the distance between them, wrapped both arms around Noctis's neck, and kissed him before he had taken another step away from the door.

Noctis caught her around the waist and returned the kiss.

Nocthyrael pressed herself tightly against him while her hands locked behind his neck, abandoning the restraint she had shown in front of the others. Noctis's hand moved along her back and drew her closer, and she responded by rising against him before deciding even that was not close enough.

She jumped into his arms and wrapped both legs around his waist while tightening her arms behind his neck.

Noctis caught her easily.

One arm supported her while the other held her firmly against his chest, and Nocthyrael returned to his mouth before either of them had any reason to speak. Several strands of her hair shifted across her face during the movement, but she ignored them, tightening her legs around him when Noctis began walking deeper into the room.

He kissed her back with the same intensity.

There was nothing they needed to explain in that moment. Nocthyrael's arms tightened whenever the kiss broke long enough for either of them to breathe, and each time Noctis adjusted his hold beneath her, she responded by drawing herself closer rather than allowing distance to remain.

Noctis carried her toward the bed.

One of Nocthyrael's hands moved into his silver-white hair while the other stayed behind his neck, and she continued kissing him as he crossed the room. The urgency gradually softened without disappearing, changing from the desperate need to confirm his return into something slower and more deliberate now that the door was closed and nothing outside the room demanded either of them.

When they reached the bed, Noctis lowered her carefully.

Nocthyrael kept both arms around him until her back settled against the bedding, then drew him down enough to continue the kiss without interruption. Her legs gradually loosened from around his waist as she shifted farther onto the bed, giving Noctis enough room to support himself above her.

One of her hands moved from his neck to his shoulder.

The other searched beside her until it found his.

Noctis closed his fingers around hers.

Their hands remained interlocked against the bedding while Nocthyrael drew him closer again, and the rest of the chamber gradually ceased to matter.

Hours later, the room had grown quiet.

The lamps had burned low enough that most of the master chamber rested in darkness, with only a little moonlight entering through the narrow windows and reaching the edge of the bed. Nocthyrael slept against Noctis with her head partly on his chest and one arm resting across him beneath the blanket, her body finally relaxed after the fear and tension she had carried since leaving the 3-Star Fortress.

Noctis remained awake beside her, though he had no intention of moving while she slept so comfortably against him. A few strands of her silver-white hair had fallen across her face, and he moved them aside before letting his hand settle along her back again. Nocthyrael shifted closer without waking, pressing her cheek more firmly against him before her breathing returned to the same slow rhythm.

With nothing demanding his immediate attention, Noctis finally had time to consider what the battle had left behind. Aurelion and Malgoryth were dead, their god-cores absorbed, and the changes triggered by taking both cores at once had stabilized throughout his body. The 108 major meridian points remained open without requiring deliberate circulation, while the smaller channels branching from them had already become as natural to his awareness as the older pathways controlled by his Genesis Core.

The existence of those meridians interested him more than the fact that they were stable. He had never possessed them in this life, but he understood exactly what they were and what they could be used for because cultivation was not unfamiliar to him. Another life had taught him meridian circulation, technique routing, Dao comprehension, body refinement, and countless principles that this world had given him little reason to consider until now.

He had once been Haotian.

That history remained his alone, and Noctis had no reason to explain it to anyone around him. What mattered was that the sudden appearance of a complete meridian network inside his god-body connected something from that previous existence to what he had just encountered here, and the memories taken from Aurelion and Malgoryth suggested that the connection extended far beyond his own transformation.

Noctis allowed only a small portion of Blood Memory to surface while Nocthyrael slept beside him. Aurelion's memories gave him brief impressions of vast white structures built across unfamiliar mountains, cultivation grounds covered by enormous formations, and spatial routes far more sophisticated than anything the local Church possessed. He recognized cultivation principles inside much of what he saw, but the names attached to those places meant little to him without the wider context Aurelion had taken for granted.

Malgoryth's memories were different in appearance but carried the same implication. Noctis saw black mountains beneath crimson skies, demonic cities spread across regions much larger than any fortress territory on this planet, and enormous gates surrounded by formations that combined demonic power with cultivation methods. Other fragments contained unfamiliar organizations, territories, cultivators, and routes between places Malgoryth had known well enough that his memories contained no explanation for someone seeing them for the first time.

Noctis did not push any deeper. Blood Memory could give him what the two gods knew, but their memories remained memories rather than records prepared for another person to study. He would need time to sort through them properly before deciding which details mattered and which were simply fragments of lives lived somewhere beyond this planet.

Nocthyrael shifted again while he was thinking, her hand sliding a little farther across his chest. Noctis adjusted the blanket over her shoulder and continued resting his hand along her back until she settled, choosing to leave the unfamiliar memories alone rather than spend the rest of the night digging through them beside her.

It was sometime after that when a transmission reached him.

The contact carried enough demonic authority that Noctis recognized the source almost immediately. The Demon God of the Academy did not force his way into Noctis's thoughts or announce himself with any unnecessary display of power; his voice simply reached Noctis across the distance between them.

"Noctis, come to the Academy when you can. We need to talk."

Noctis remained where he was, careful not to disturb Nocthyrael. Considering what happened at the 3-Star Fortress, he had already expected the Academy to contact him sooner or later, and the memories he had just begun examining gave him more reason to accept the summons rather than less.

"I'll come."

The connection ended after his answer.

Noctis did not get out of bed afterward. Whatever the Demon God wanted to discuss could wait until Nocthyrael woke, and there was no reason to leave in the middle of the night when he had only just returned to her. He rested his head against the pillow again, kept his arm around her, and allowed the questions raised by the two gods' memories to remain unanswered for a few more hours.
